Once Upon A Time . . . In Hollywood made its debut last night on Starz and I can’t begin to express how disappointing I found it to be, especially considering all the raves and many deeming it Tarantino’s finest work. It isn’t. Not even close to Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs. DiCaprio and Pitt are both excellent actors and are excellent in their roles. But most of us already know that. And for the first two plus hours, they don’t disappoint. It’s the story itself that I felt lacked the normal intensity and twists seen in most of QT’s films. The sets and seeing old Hollywood as it was when I first visited there in the early 70’s was a treat as well. But the “cameos” of SO many big names (Luke Perry, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, who’s scene didn’t even make the final cut, Bruce Dern, Timothy Olyphant, Michael Madsen and even Al Pacino) were also just that and made it clear this was Leo and Brad’s movie. I won’t give away the ending for those who haven’t and still want to see it, but to tell you the truth, I kind of saw it coming. I won’t say how because it might spoil it for others. Quentin has been one of my favs, right up there with Scorsese in my book. Pulp Fiction is probably one of my top five / deserted island flicks. And as much as I didn’t like Django, Unchained, I would still put it above OUATIH. They final 15 minutes were brilliant, but to me, not worth the two plus hours leading up to them. GO DODGERS!!! Did Tarantino fit "nigger" in there anywhere? That bastard pisses me off.

His other favourite word that begins with an “F” got quite a good deal of play. That’s my biggest beef with D’jango - it’s almost like he just kept using it for shock value only to the point that it made me uncomfortable. And completely unnecessary. GO DODGERS!!!

Only one week until Rex Manning Day! For those who have never seen it, a great little film called Empire Records features a washed up pop star with the above name who appears at the store on April 8th.
Most of the players were / are unknowns at the time - the biggest star being Anthony LaPaglia, who owns the store. Others include very young Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger, Matthew Caufield (as Rex), Rory Cochrane (CSI: Miami) and a few other familiar faces.
Excellent soundtrack and overall really good flick. I like to watch it back to back with The Commitments, another fav with great music.
If you’re getting bored with the mandatory lockdown, these are a great way to kill a few hours.

Watching La Bamba. Richie's brother always reminds me of my late brother Dave. Both with huge chips on their shoulder. Both constantly in trouble. Just when Dave was figuring life out he died.
Very good movie.

With all of this stay at home crap and most of the network series we watch heading into summer hiatus, we’re finally taking advantage of the 30 + movie channels we’ve been paying for since who knows how long.
Caught “The Judge” last night on HBO with Robert Downey, Jr. in his typical snarkish manner as an attorney who has to defend his estranged father (a small town municipal judge played by Robert Duvall) against murder charges.
Very good acting (as expected!) and story with a few comedic moments intermixed with the drama.
Co-stars include Billy Bob Thornton as the prosecuting attorney, Vincent D’Onofrio as one of RDJ’s brothers and Vera Farmiga as the small town girl he left behind. She has a young hot daughter (Leighton Meister) that he meets and makes out with at a bar that he unknowingly might have fathered.
Ending was not a huge surprise, but it’s still worth the two hours and twenty minutes spent and I give it a good 3 1/2 - 4 out of five.

I like Daniel Craig's James Bond better than any of the others. They were TOO cool. TOO slick. This one is a bad ass for sure. But he gets outsmarted or outmaneuvered from time to time. It also highlights Britain's limited resources.
Quantum of Solace is on right now. Casino Royale was on last night.

I didn’t think he’d be a good Bond but he really surprised the hell out of me and won me over. I thought Pierce Brosnon was pretty good, too. Connery over Moore. Dalton doesn’t get a mention. Same for Lazenby and Sellers. GO DODGERS!!!

Caught It: Chapter Two last night on HBO. That is one creepy clown. Not as scary as the original theatrical release and probably a bit more gory, but a decent sequel and story.
Stephen King has a brief cameo as a small store owner. Really good casting of grownups filling the roles of the kids in the first film who all make appearances as well in this one.
Really went fast for a two and a half plus hour movie. If you haven’t seen the first one, I’d recommend it over and before viewing this sequel.
And to be specific, NOT the original television release with Tim Curry as an almost comical Pennywise.
GO DODGERS!!!

The Sixth Sense just finished. Great flick. Not a big Bruce Willis fan. That's his best movie.

The Sixth Sense just finished. Great flick. Not a big Bruce Willis fan. That's his best movie. Gotta love Twitter. Lot of polls there containing “pick three out of ten” albums, books, movies, etc. I’ll usually chime in but one a week or so back just TOTALLY blew me away. I don’t know if it was age or ignorance, but it went a little like this: Pick three out ten “best” comedies. I went with Caddyshack and Coming to America; but out of the remaining eight I said “literally at least 100 OTHERS before any of them”. I can’t remember all eight, but I do remember a few - Superbad, Bridesmaids, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Zoolander - you get the idea. Just a bunch of awful movies to be in a Top Ten poll. No Vacation, Arthur, Beverly Hills Cop, Airplane, Monty Python (Grail or Life of Brian), Blues Brothers, Animal House, Butch Cassidy (granted, a western - but a pretty funny one), Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, 48 Hours, Back To The Future, Used Cars, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Running Scared, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Ghostbusters (original, of course), Trading Places, Austin Powers, Stripes, When Harry Met Sally, Tommy Boy, Office Space, One Crazy Summer, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, My Cousin Vinny, Wayne’s World, Parenthood, Porky’s, Bachelor Party, The Jerk, Slap Shot, American Pie, Raising Arizona, Doc Hollywood, Revenge of the Nerds, Better Off Dead, Groundhog Day, The Big Lebowski, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, even old Marx Brothers classics - these are just off the top of my head - I could go on and on. I’m not sure who started the poll or how old they are, but based on most of their “selections” being from the last decade, I’m guessing fairly young and completely ignorant to any or all that I listed above. GO DODGERS!!!

Caught “Joker” the other night on HBO. A true tour de force for Joaquin Phoenix, but overall a VERY dark and disturbing movie.
DeNiro is typically snarkish in his role as a late night television host. Frances Conroy is highly sympathetic as Joker’s mother.
There are minor mentions and appearances of the Wayne family and Arcanum Mental Hospital gets a few screen moments.
Not sure if I can recommend this one or not. I kind of liked it but at the same time didn’t like it.
But what’s even more disturbing is how life is once again imitating art in nearly every major city in the world.
GO DODGERS!!!

I've added two to my favorites list. Heartbreak Ridge & American History X. Excellent movies. Agreed - saw both of them back when they were originally released. Might be time for a “re-viewing”. Especially loved Clint in his typical rough, gruff, sometimes tough to understand vocalizing. Can just imagine him fitting right in at Paris Island. GO DODGERS!!!
