In the midst of a sensational stretch that has reaffirmed their stature as one of the top teams in the National League, the Dodgers could be set to add arguably the best player available on the trade market.
According to Bob Nightengale in an article for USA Today, Los Angeles is considered the favorite to land the Orioles' Manny Machado.
Per Nightengale, Baltimore has recently placed increased focus on scouting Los Angeles' Minor League system as the market for Machado begins to pick up steam. The Dodgers, who are 26-10 since May 17 after opening the season 16-26, ranked 10th on MLB Pipeline's preseason list of the top farm systems in baseball.
The value of a Machado trade would be twofold for the Dodgers, improving their own roster while keeping him away from the D-backs, who are also reportedly interested in the Orioles slugger. Entering Wednesday, the Dodgers were 2 1/2 games behind the D-backs in the National League West.
The Dodgers presumably would use Machado as a shortstop, with Justin Turner entrenched at third base and Corey Seager out for the season following Tommy John surgery.
Los Angeles has mostly used Chris Taylor at shortstop since Seager went down, but the club can move him elsewhere to accommodate Machado. Taylor opened 2018 as the Dodgers' starting center fielder, a position he filled during the 2017 postseason as the Dodgers made it to Game 7 of the World Series before losing to the Astros.

I wonder why the Yankees would be the favorite. They already have Didi Gregorious at shortstop & Miguel Andujar at third.

I'm thinking that I'm not sure he's what we need. Even more offense would be welcomed, no doubt.
I saw something the other day that said he was -20 in DFS. That's worrisome.

I don't see the need for Machado, not as long as we have Taylor, and Hernandez filling in so well at SS. Anyhow, he'd only be a rental till Corey returns next March good as new. IF we need anything, it's to shore up the bullpen. It's great we're well past the worst of our injury woes, but now we have Baez and Cingrani on the DL and we'll need some reliable releivers if we're to win the West again.

Which really makes you think of the cost of Machado in prospects. The Dodgers' front office proved last year they can get good relievers without breaking the bank. Thank goodness they didn't keep Yu Darvish, or foolishly hold on to Brandon McCarthy.

Dodgers also rumored to be interested in Scooter Gennett, Brian Dozier and Asdrubal Cabrera. Would love to see them acquire Gennet, my 2nd choice is Cabrera, the guy is a professional hitter. I would pass on Dozier, his numbers are way down.

Left wiggle room for mid-season additions.

Machado would be a great acquisition. But the question is if he is worth the bang for the buck. He says he is a short stop but as Rosenthal pointed out he is a very good defensive short stop. Can or might he improve who knows but we know he is a great 3rd baseman. The question is then is he worth the prospects with shady defense and who will go where in Muncy, Belli, CT3, if acquired since the team values defense and versatility. The prospects perceived to be of the O's liking are Lux and May which shouldn't be any type of obstacle in my opinion.

Looks like the Yankees (like they need another bat) are making a strong push to get Machado. Heard last night that the Yankees would be his preferred location next offseason when he’s a free agent. Yankees looking to be the Golden State of baseball...

Yankees looking to be the Golden State of baseball... The O's should try to get the best offer for themselves even if it's a in- division nemesis. The Yankees might be prepared to make him an offer once the season is over since they know the O's would want some good prospects even though they are not including Justus Sheffield. They have some guys coming off the books that would give them wiggle room temporarily but they are going to have to pay Judge etc. and Machado if they want him on top of already paying Stanton. Machado has said he is a short stop but he is great at 3rd and not so much at short stop for now. I think the Yankees are the longest shot. And, the Yankees issue is starting pitching.
