As much as I dislike the dude, Pete Rose was pretty much an enigma. He was not a really gifted athlete but played both football and baseball in high school (my mom actually went to school with him and said he was an arrogant egotistical jackass even back then).
But Pete had a drive and ambition that allowed him to excel not only at the plate, but also on D, no matter where he played. There hasn’t been a player like Rose since and I doubt with the millions even mediocre players are making these days we’ll ever see one again. Mookie is not Pete Rose. And SS is not 3B. Betts is a VERY gifted athlete, but he has slumped at critical times in his career, like the start and end of last season. We don’t need a “competent” SS. And while we can’t expect to have All Stars at every position, I just don’t get taking one out of probably the most critical and difficult OF positions and moving him to an already shaky at best IF. I hope I’m 100% wrong and Mookie does play in the Ozzie Smith realm. But this could backfire big time and despite the formidable lineup, LA is not going to score 10 runs every night. And with Maxine at 3B and Lunks coming off a fairly serious knee injury and returning to 2B (where he looked more like Sax with the yips than Davey Lopes), an untested Betts at SS makes this IF susceptible. There will be errors, count on it. How many cost us W’s remains to be seen. GO DODGERS!!! In the Pete Rose bio on the old Sports Classics Network, Rose's first wife said that when he played with the Horsies, she was talking to an Eagles' cheerleader who was wearing a pendant. "Where'd you get that?" she asked the cheerleader. "Your husband gave it to me". "That's my 14 year old daughter's pendant!", and she ripped it from her neck and then she ran away. Calling him an arrogant jackass is a compliment! He used to come through the drive-thru at the Wendy’s I worked at in high school ALL the time. Always in his Rolls and ALWAYS trying to get something free, because he was PETE FREAKING ROSE. I never gave him the time of day. Such a jerk! GO DODGERS!!!

You'd think he'd want to make a lasting impression. Sadly, he did. Babe Ruth, he was NOT. Last year at Glendale, when the players exit the playing field, fans always want autographs and all the players did, and Alex Vesia was especially friendly with the kids. He'll never make the hall of fame, but what a great guy

Dodgers' Brusdar Graterol: Unavailable for South Korea series Rotowire 18 MINS AGO Graterol is dealing with shoulder discomfort and hip tightness and won't travel to South Korea with the Dodgers for the season-opening series against the Padres on March 20 and 21, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Graterol has made just one game appearance thus far during spring training and is expected to resume throwing Tuesday, so he won't be ready with the season-opening international series little more than a week away. The right-hander still hopes to be ready for the first stateside game of the season March 28, but it's a tight timeline for him to be built up in time.
Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Frontrunner for No. 5 starter role Rotowire 14 HRS AGO With Emmet Sheehan (upper body) set to begin the season on the IL, Stone and Michael Grove look like the leading candidates to claim the Dodgers' No. 5 rotation spot, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Stone was originally thought to be competing with Sheehan for the team's final rotation spot, but it appears that Grove is in the running as well. Grove may have helped his case with a standout Cactus League start Saturday during which he pitched 3.1 scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six batters, but he struggled in two previous spring appearances. Meanwhile, Stone has been excellent in surrendering just one run over 5.2 innings with a 4:1 K:BB, so he's probably the frontrunner between the two. Manager Dave Roberts mentioned Kyle Hurt and Ryan Yarbrough are in the mix for the No. 5 starter role as well.
Dodgers' Blake Treinen: Set for imaging on ribs Rotowire 16 HRS AGO Treinen will receive X-rays and a CT scan on his ribs Saturday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Treinen was removed from Saturday's game against the Rangers after getting hit by a comebacker off the bat of Sam Huff. He looked to be in a lot of pain as he went down, but manager Dave Roberts said the Dodgers will have to wait until Sunday for more information on Treinen's condition. Until then, the team is labeling it as a right rib contusion for the 35-year-old righty.

My cousin, a HUGE Redlegs fan and I were walking thru the shopping Forum at Caesars in Vegas one afternoon. He had his usual Reds baseball cap on. Pete was doing a signing at one of the memorabilia stores and sitting alone at a table inside. My cousin took off his hat and tried to get Pete’s attention by holding it up and pointing to it. Pete ignored him. I said “pull out a $20 from your wallet and wave it around”, which he did. Pete immediately got a big smile on his face a waved my cousin to come into the store. Needless to say, my cousin declined the invitation. I GUARANTEE he doesn’t give a 💩about his ban from baseball or the HOF. The ONLY reason he keeps campaigning for election is so he can add those three little letters to the billions of autographs he’s already signed and get another $20 or so out of all of those suckers. GO DODGERS!!!

Breaking Ty Cobb's hit record, what irony: Cobb was very often tainted as an asshole in his on right, and worse than Rose, but we've since learned it was a pack of lies. Cobb descended from a long line of of Southern abolitionists and was a big fan of Jackie Robinson. He treated fans the way they should be treated and didn't go out of his way to make enemies. He did spike infielders, but so did a lot of players in those days. Only Cobb is mentioned cos of his career stats. It turns out that Rose is most of what Cobb was portrayed but to Rose's credit, and I hold my nose, is that he was no racist. I hear he palled around with his black teammates and the manager of the Reds advised him not to.

Today is the day of the Gavin brothers.
First, Gavin STone looked awesome, K-ing the first inning and had 5 total in his 4 innings, with but 2 singles, one of them a "seeing eye" single and 0 walks. He had great command of his fastball and changeup, with both movement and location. Only one pitch was hard hit, a drive caught on the warning track. We have our #5 starter. However, he had a super spring last year but struggled at AAA and then in the bigs when he was called up, but now he has more experience. I think he'll be great.
Gavin Lux looked very much at ease at 2B, fielding the ball at least 5 times in his 6 innings. He went 1 for 3 with a run scored. We have our 2Bman now.

Trevor Bauer returns to Camelback Ranch; Dodgers bullpen takes a hit for Korea trip
Story by Jack Harris • 1h • 4 min read
For the first time since he was released by the Dodgers last year, Trevor Bauer returned to Camelback Ranch on Sunday afternoon.
A glamorous reunion, it was not.
On a nondescript backfield, against prospects from all levels of the Dodgers minor league teams, and with an unrecognizable black and red uniform draped over him, Bauer pitched in an exhibition game for a team called Asian Breeze — a Japanese tryout club for players hoping to land professional contracts.
The 32-year-old tossed three scoreless innings and, he was told, clocked 99 mph with his fastball on the field’s Trackman system.
The awkwardness of the occasion, however, was nonetheless impossible to ignore.
Over the last three years, Bauer has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women, though he was never charged with a crime. In 2022, he received the longest suspension under MLB’s domestic violence policy, even after his initial 324-game ban was reduced to 194 games by an independent arbitrator.
Since being released by the Dodgers last January, Bauer has yet to be signed by another MLB team — despite his insistence that he is “still one of the best pitchers in the world.”
“I’m a better pitcher than I was last time people here saw me,” Bauer said. “Hopefully today reminded them that I’m still an elite pitcher.”
Bauer spent last season in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league. He said he has offered MLB teams to play this season for the league-minimum salary.
Less than three weeks from opening day, he remains with a big league job.
So, the former Cy Young Award winner accepted an invitation to pitch for Asian Breeze this spring.
Bauer said Asian Breeze initially planned to pitch him in a Saturday exhibition against the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. But when that game was postponed, Bauer’s outing was pushed back to Sunday.
“I don’t really care who I pitch against, honestly,” Bauer said about returning to the Dodgers’ spring training home. “I just like to pitch. Hopefully, they enjoyed it and had a good time.”
As for what Bauer, who remains active on YouTube and social media, plans to do next with the start of the season fast approaching?
“Try to entertain fans on YouTube and then see where it goes from there,” he said. “I don't know. I don't really plan at this point, because everything is out of my control.”

Dodgers' Gavin Lux: Out due to illness Rotowire 4 HRS AGO Lux is away from Dodgers camp Tuesday due to illness, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
A bug seems to be making its way around the clubhouse, as Max Muncy and assistant pitching coach Connor McGuiness have also been affected. Consider Lux day-to-day.
Dodgers' Max Muncy: Battling illness Rotowire 4 HRS AGO Muncy is away from Dodgers camp Tuesday due to illness, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
He hasn't been in the team's lineup for a few days, and the illness likely explains why that's the case. The Dodgers have just one more Cactus League game before heading to South Korea to take on the Padres in the first two regular-season contests March 20 and 21, but it's not clear whether Muncy will be ready to play in Wednesday's Cactus League contest versus the Mariners.
Dodgers' Miguel Rojas: Back in action Tuesday Rotowire 5 HRS AGO Rojas (lower leg) is starting at third base and batting eighth for the Dodgers in his return to action Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
Rojas had to be scratched from Sunday's lineup with some lower leg soreness but is back out there a couple days later. The veteran infielder is prepping for a utility infielder role in 2024.

Dodgers' Max Muncy: Traveling for season-opening series Rotowire 38 MINS AGO Muncy (illness) said Wednesday he will travel with the Dodgers to South Korea for the season-opening series against the Padres next week, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.
The 33-year-old apparently lost 10 pounds while battling a virus for most of the past week, but it appears he'll be back in time for the start of the regular season. Muncy has a week to get his strength back before Opening Day next Wednesday, when he should be locked in at third base for Los Angeles.
Dodgers' Will Smith: Scratched with back tightness Rotowire 3 HRS AGO Smith was scratched from the lineup Wednesday for the Dodgers' Cactus League game against the Mariners due to low-back tightness, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
Smith should be fine to play a week from now, when the Dodgers take on the Padres for the first of two games in Seoul, South Korea to kick off their regular season. The Dodgers felt no need to push Smith to play in their final Cactus League game, so Austin Barnes will handle catching duties Wednesday.
Dodgers' Blake Treinen: Completes bullpen session Rotowire 3 HRS AGO Treinen (lung) said he completed a bullpen session Wednesday consisting of 15-to-20 pitches, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.
Treinen, who is recovering from a bruised lung, seemed upbeat after the session, but he wouldn't disclose whether he'll be available for the Dodgers' two-game season-opening series in South Korea versus the Padres on March 20 and 21. Since Wednesday's game against the Mariners marked the Dodgers' final Cactus League contest before the Seoul Series, Treinen may need to prove his health in a simulated game or a minor-league spring game before making the trip to South Korea.
Dodgers' Gavin Lux: Back in lineup Wednesday Rotowire 6 HRS AGO Lux (illness) will start at second base and bat eighth in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Mariners, Kirsten Watson of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports.
Lux was away from camp Tuesday while he battled an illness, but he presumably made a full recovery from the ailment overnight. He'll return to the lineup at the keystone, the position he's expected to occupy this season after defensive concerns prompted the Dodgers to move him off of shortstop earlier in spring training.

Dodgers renew contract for Andrew Toles, maintaining ex-player's insurance while treating mental health
Toles has been working to treat his bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and has not played since 2018 By R.J. Anderson 40 mins ago • 1 min read
The Los Angeles Dodgers made a quiet, yet notable move on Wednesday, renewing the contract of former outfielder Andrew Toles, according to the Associated Press.
Toles, 31, has not played in the majors since 2018. He's been on the restricted list since March 2019 because of mental health issues. (He was subsequently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.) There's no reason to believe he'll ever take another swing, for the Dodgers or anyone else. Nevertheless, the Dodgers have continued to renew his contract each spring so that he maintains his health insurance. It's a shockingly decent act in an industry that too often loses touch with humanity.
Toles appeared in 96 games for the Dodgers from 2016-18, hitting for a 111 OPS+ and even batting .462/.467/.615 in the 2016 National League Championship Series. Back in 2021, USA Today reported that he had been in "at least" 20 mental health clinics since leaving the Dodgers. After Toles was found sleeping at a Florida airport following a 2020 arrest, his father, Alvin, gained legal guardianship and brought him back to Fairburn, Georgia.
"We are having challenges," Alvin Toles told USA Today, "but nothing that God and I can't handle. Schizophrenia, it's just so tough. I mean, he can't even watch TV. He hears voices and the TV at the same time, so it's kind of confusing. I've seen him looking at some baseball games on his laptop, but I don't think he really understands what's going on. I just want him to have a chance in life. That's all. Just to be healthy, live a normal life."
The Dodgers seem to want the same from Toles.
"Man, I would love to see him. I'd love to put my arms around him. I miss him. I really miss him," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Toles in 2021.
For those unfamiliar with Major League Baseball's transactional jargon, teams are allowed to "renew" contracts of players who are not arbitration eligible each spring. The restricted list, meanwhile, is an official designation that allows a team to maintain a player's rights without them counting against their active roster limits.
