Dodgers Rumors: Another Suitor Has Emerged in Dylan Cease Sweepstakes
Story by Matt Levine • 8h
The Dodgers entered the offseason looking to revamp their starting rotation, and the front office was able to make it happen rather quickly into the winter. The team traded for ace right-hander Tyler Glasnow and signed Japanese pitching sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a 12-year, $325 million contract.
However, before all these moves, the consensus was that the Dodgers could have landed right-hander Dylan Cease. Los Angeles had plenty of talks with the Chicago White Sox about Cease, but nothing came to fruition.
L.A. could still look to add someone like Cease to the mix, but it seems that they have more competition for his services. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Seattle Mariners have entered the sweepstakes for Cease. "The Seattle Mariners have quietly entered trade talks with the Chicago White Sox for ace Dylan Cease, with the White Sox seeking a package centered around young starters Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo."
Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today
The White Sox value Cease and want a large return for him. This is part of why the Dodgers moved on to land Glasnow in a trade, but it doesn't mean the door is closed on the team landing the right-hander.
Los Angeles could always re-engage with the White Sox at the trade deadline if they choose. The Dodgers are always looking for ways to improve their roster, and Cease is under team control for two more seasons.
"If the White Sox can’t complete a trade with the Mariners, they are expected to open the season with Cease. They could revisit trade talks with teams towards the July 30 trade deadline or wait to see if a team becomes desperate with a sudden injury."
Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today
Cease would be a luxury at this point for the Dodgers, but a team can never have too much pitching. Maybe he still lands with L.A., but the likelihood seems to have faded considerably from the start of the offseason.

I'm really ambivalent on Cease. If LA can pick him up for a couple of minor league prospects, I’d say go for it. Maybe throw Maxine in on the deal. If the Sox want frontliners, I’d pass. GO DODGERS!!!

I’d LOVE to see a six man rotation and I don’t really see any downside to it. The pen is going to have to give LA three or four innings just about every night with a five man rotation anyways. So there’s virtually no difference if they have to do it every six games versus every five. My only concern is that it gives Froggy and Daisy additional chances to make the wrong call(s) on who to bring in. But again, they’re already doing that every five games now, so what’s the difference if it goes to six? That pen is going to have to include more than a couple of guys that can throw and be effective every night if necessary. This team SHOULD score a lot of runs. But we all saw what good pitching did to them last October. Another division title flag won’t mean diddly squat if they can’t back it up with postseason victories. GO DODGERS!!!

Dodgers adjust new pitcher's contract due to health concern
Story by Darragh McDonald, MLB Trade Rumors • 52m
The Dodgers signed left-hander James Paxton to a one-year deal this week, though the financial details of the contract changed from the initial reporting. Per a report today from Fabian Ardaya and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, an unknown health issue led to a lesser guarantee, though it wasn’t serious enough to scuttle the deal completely.
As details of the agreement were initially trickling out last week, it was reported as an $11M guarantee for the lefty. But Rosenthal reported this morning that the guarantee was actually just $7M. It appears some sort of health concern popped up, which was enough to knock $4M off the guarantee but not so serious as to cause the Dodgers to walk away. Paxton can still earn a total of $13M via bonuses* as long as he makes the Opening Day roster and eventually makes at least 18 starts. Neither the club nor Paxton’s agent Scott Boras provided details for the report from The Athletic, citing HIPAA.
Health or the lack thereof has frequently been an issue for Paxton throughout his career. Now 35 and about to enter his 11th Major League season, he has never reached 30 starts or 161 innings pitched in a big league campaign. He hardly pitched at all in the 2020-2022 period, with a left flexor strain keeping him to just five starts in the shortened 2020 season. Then Tommy John surgery wiped out most of the next two years, with a torn lat preventing him from returning late in 2022.
Last year saw some encouraging progress from those significant injury issues but it wasn’t totally smooth sailing. A hamstring strain in the spring pushed his season debut until May. He was able to stay healthy from there until September, finishing the season on the injured list due to right knee inflammation. His 19 starts and 96 innings pitched were more than he logged in the previous three years combined, but he also seemed to run out of gas. He had a 2.73 ERA through his first 10 starts but then a 6.98 mark in the final nine.
It seems he’s still not 100% but the Dodgers will take a shot on him regardless. He has a 3.69 ERA in his career, pairing a 26.3% strikeout rate with a 7.5% walk rate. The club is generally unafraid to bank on talented players even if they have injury concerns, having signed guys like Blake Treinen, Daniel Hudson, Jimmy Nelson, J.P. Feyereisen and Alex Reyes in recent years.
They are now set to go into 2024 with a rotation featuring plenty of talent but also a decent amount of uncertainty. Yoshinobu Yamamoto has loads of success in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball but has no MLB track record yet. Walker Buehler missed all of last year recovering from Tommy John surgery. Tyler Glasnow has never topped 120 innings in a major league season due to his own injury history. Bobby Miller was good last year but still doesn’t have a full year of big league experience. Options like Emmet Sheehan, Michael Grove and Gavin Stone are similarly unproven. Paxton would have already come with concerns just based on his track record but those will only be enhanced now that he’s known to be dealing with some kind of ailment.
It’s also possible that the club could re-sign Clayton Kershaw, as it has in each of the past two offseasons. But he is also a question mark, having undergone shoulder surgery in November that will keep him out of action until midseason.
* Paxton can get a $2M bonus either for being on the roster for the Dodgers’ season opener in South Korea against the Padres on March 20 or their domestic opener against the Cardinals on March 28. Otherwise, he can earn a $1M bonus if added to the roster before April 15. Paxton will also earn a $600K bonus for making his sixth, eighth, tenth, 12th and 16th starts of the season, plus a $1M bonus for reaching 18 starts. With $4M in bonuses based on starts and the $2M early-season roster bonus, he could add $6M to his $7M guarantee, bringing his total earnings for the year to $13M.

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw Gets Brutally Trolled By Brooklyn-Based Restaurant
Story by Ricardo Sandoval • 1h
Restaurants worldwide have their own unique way to pass on government-mandated laws. Some get funny and creative, some get straight to the point, and some send the message unapologetically.
A restaurant based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn decided to take a jab at the Dodgers and their future Hall of Famer, Clayton Kershaw, in one of their health-focused posters.
The restaurant, called Super Burrito, decided to use Kershaw as the center of their choking poster to poke fun at him and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The poster shows Kershaw choking and needing to be resuscitated. Although it pokes fun at Kershaw and the Dodgers, they continue to detail what one must do when someone is choking.
This poster is out of left field, no pun intended. The reason for using Kershaw in this poster is to take a jab at his postseason performances.
The 10-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner has always shined in the regular season, but seems disappear in the postseason. He has a career 4.49 ERA in 39 postseason appearances.
Regardless, it's unfair to diminish his overall body of work throughout his 16-year career. He's a sure first-ballot Hall of Famer, and will have his jersey retired by the Dodgers when it's all said and done.
Nonetheless, he's received a ton of hate and backlash toward his postseason performances, and this restaurant decided to get "creative" with this design.
It's unknown whether the owner of this restaurant is a Dodger hater, a Giants fan, or can't seem to get over the team's move to the West Coast, but this is a new low.
At the end of the day, Kershaw will be in Cooperstown and maybe even add to his one World Series ring before he retires, getting the last laugh.

If the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn, Clayton might have people following him home and terrorizing him. Remember Ed Whitson, who was pretty good with the Monks? The Yanks signed him I think in '85 and he wasn't very good, but he wasn't terrible either. His ERA was 4.88 and Yank fans were terrible to him, and a few even followed him home and left nails in his driveway. Never mind that he pitched some pretty good games, Yank fans focused on the games he got lit up. Poor guy. He nevertheless has a nice career, a 3.79 ERA

And they usually don’t take too kindly to usage of their owned properties for advertising purposes of businesses they have no share or interest in. GO DODGERS!!!

Longtime Dodgers Veteran on LA's 2024 Offseason: 'I Don't Think It's Bad for Baseball' Story by Matt Levine • 1d All offseason, the Dodgers have been painted as the villains of baseball due to their increased spending habits. The Dodgers committed over $1 billion to multiple players this winter, and they have been cast as wrongdoers. Los Angeles simply saw an opportunity to flex their financial muscle and obtain some of the best players around the world. Their signing of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani and Japanese pitching sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto set off a historic offseason for the team. The Dodgers are now seen as one of the best teams entering the new season, and the pressure will be on them to find success. Veteran L.A. outfielder Chris Taylor spoke with Doug McKain of dodgersnation.com and laid out why the spending of Los Angeles isn't bad for the sport of baseball. “I don’t think it’s bad for baseball by any means to get some of the best players in baseball on the Dodgers, one of the most popular teams in baseball. Whether you love us or hate us, you enjoy watching us on tv. And we’re just adding to that with guys like Ohtani and Yamamoto and Glasnow and all these high caliber players. So, no, I don’t think it’s bad for baseball at all.” www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/longtime-dodgers-veteran-on-la-s-2024-offseason-i-don-t-think-it-s-bad-for-baseball/ar-BB1hDAYL

But that's a cartoon or otherwise a drawing so it's as legal as any editorial cartoon of any politician. If it was an altered photo, there would be a case. I did not know that. There still may be a case against usage of the Dodgers jersey and hat, which I’m sure are trademarked. I had a friend who owned a roadhouse that my band used to play at called The Flicker Inn. It was well known for also being a very popular biker bar. He had a huge neon light you could see from close to a mile away made using the Harley Davidson bar & shield logo as well as t-shirts, glassware, bottle and can huggies and several other novelty items. He removed the words “Harley” and “Davidson” from the top and bottom of the shield, “Motorcycles” from the middle bar and replaced them with “Flicker” and “Inn” while inserting “Roadhouse” into the middle bar. Man with a briefcase showed up a few weeks later from HD Corporate in Milwaukee with cease and desist orders for copyright infringement. He literally had to destroy all of the items, including the neon light. Ended up costing him over $20 large with legal fees and all. Of course, he’s one of those dudes that ALWAYS lands on his feet and he later sold the bar and property it sat on for seven figures to Shell who razed the structure and built one of their mini marts / gas / car wash complexes. He bought another biker bar in Cheviot (a small Cincy suburb); it burned to the ground under mysterious circumstances within a year or two. Not sure how he came out on that one. Last I heard he was being sued by two other dudes / partners who invested with him to purchase yet another west side bar. Only in this case, they expanded the structure significantly to add a stage for live music as well as the existing billiard room which went from two tables to a half dozen. Place was VERY cool and my band was set to play there when things got ugly and my bud was accused, however not convicted of embezzling several hundred thousand dollars from the business. They filed bankruptcy and closed within a year of the re-do. Damn shame, too - place was awesome and the stage was elevated and as big as some of the arena venues in the area. GO DODGERS!!!

Dodgers GM Provides Major Update on Potential Clayton Kershaw Return
Story by Ricardo Sandoval • 4h
Los Angeles Dodgers veteran and future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw remains a free agent. Although the Dodgers have yet to sign him, the organization isn't closing the door on him.
In fact, according to Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes, the 'door is open' for a return to Los Angeles.
Kershaw is a Dodger through and through. The Dodger organization drafted him in the 2006 MLB Draft with the seventh overall pick. Kershaw made his debut in 2008 and since day one, we knew that he would be special.
He's accomplished all he could in his career in Dodger Blue, and the hope is that 2023 wasn't the last we see of him.
The 2023 season ended in a nightmare scenario for Kershaw and that is not the lasting image Dodgers fans want to see him in. Kershaw and the Dodgers are synonymous with each other, and we need Kersahw to finish with at least one more ring for the Boys in Blue. If everything works and he's back in Dodger blue, Kershaw won't be able to pitch until at least July. The ten-time All-Star is coming off major shoulder surgery.
It was a big reason he struggled in his lone 2023 postseason start and possibly why he has yet to sign with a team.
The Dodgers will have a spot open for him whenever he's ready, and the front office won't blink twice at the opportunity to bring him back. Hopefully, it's only a matter of time before they agree on a deal.
