2022 World Series odds: Dodgers enter MLB offseason as favorites; Astros, Braves ahead of Yankees Despite a handful of key free agents, the odds favor Los Angeles next year
By R.J. Anderson Nov 3, 2021 at 10:16 am ET 1 min read
The Atlanta Braves won the 2021 World Series on Tuesday night, defeating the Houston Astros in six games. The Braves' championship is their first since 1995, and serves as the culmination of an improbable run that saw Atlanta overcome numerous obstacles, including a losing record entering August and the injury-caused absences of outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and starting pitcher Mike Soroka.
While the Braves and their fans celebrate and make parade plans, the rest of the majors can now set their sights toward the 2022 season with the hopes of having it end with a champagne shower of their own. We figured we'd highlight next year's World Series odds, as forecasted by Caesar's Sportsbook.
2022 World Series odds (Via Caesars Sportsbook on Nov. 2)
Los Angeles Dodgers +550 Houston Astros +700 Atlanta Braves +900 New York Yankees +1000 Chicago White Sox +1200 Tampa Bay Rays +1400 San Francisco Giants +1600 Boston Red Sox +1600 San Diego Padres +1600 Milwaukee Brewers +1600 Toronto Blue Jays +1800 New York Mets +2000 St. Louis Cardinals +2500 Philadelphia Phillies +3000 Oakland Athletics +4000 Cincinnati Reds +4000 Seattle Mariners +5000 Los Angeles Angels +5000 Cleveland Guardians +5000 Washington Nationals +6000 Miami Marlins +8000 Colorado Rockies +8000 Kansas City Royals +8000 Minnesota Twins +8000 Detroit Tigers +8000 Chicago Cubs +8000 Pittsburgh Pirates +12500 Texas Rangers +15000 Arizona Diamondbacks +20000 Baltimore Orioles +20000
In layman's terms, the Dodgers are once again favored to win the World Series. That might qualify as a surprise, given that Los Angeles is staring down an offseason that will see Corey Seager, Max Scherzer, Clayton Kershaw, Chris Taylor, and Kenley Jansen qualify for free agency. Clearly folks are confident in Andrew Friedman and Brandon Gomes' ability to retain and/or improve upon those individuals.

Dodgers' Trevor Bauer: Exercises 2022 option Rotowire 23 HRS AGO Bauer will exercise his $32 million player option with the Dodgers for the 2022 season, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. Bauer spent the final three months of the 2021 campaign on administrative leave while the league investigated the sexual assault allegations against him, so it's hardly a surprise he's exercising his player option rather than returning to the open market. The 30-year-old pitched in 17 games before being placed on leave and had a 2.59 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 137:37 K:BB across 107.2 innings, and the results of the investigation figure to dictate his availability for the start of the 2022 season. According to Dodgernation.com, there's a great chance he'll sit out the entire '22 season even if the DA tosses the case. What really happened, is a "he said, she said" thing, but her emails and posts on Twitter don't do much for her integrity, no to mention the fact that they had two encounters. So Bauer is a sex maniac but so are lots of people. The judge who denied the extension to the woman's restraining order doesn't seem to believe her accusations. I think it'll come down to the Dodger brass having a meeting with Bauer to discuss her future as a Dodger. They'll want him to get graphic, even pornographic if necessary, so they'll all know what she wanted him to do and what he actually did do. The fact he hasn't been cut has to say something. His status in '22 is totally up in the air. As a compromise, why not just fine him heavily but let him back on the roster next year?

I would imagine if he ELECTS to sit out, it would be like David Price with Covid & his newborn infant. Didn't Price voluntarily give up that years' pay? But I would want it in writing from Bauer. Don't put it past him to change his mind & maybe you've signed Scherzer & in comes Bauer. He had a change of heart. Where's my thirty million dollars? He would obviously be leaving himself that option by exercising his option. If he considers himself innocent, he would be insulted with a fine. I would.

There's thought that the Dodgers would release Bauer on a technicality in the contract. Which makes sense. A lot of the guys which might not even be there next year have said they want to move on and don't want him around. Interesting stuff.

Dodgers Outright Scott Alexander, Two Others November 5th, 2021 at 10:40pm CST • By Anthony Franco Always thought guy was way overrated. Wasn't he on the IL most of the year? We paid a cool mil to Hamels and who knows how much to Duffy and neither of them even threw a single pitch as a Dodger. Not sure what Alexander took them for, but whatever it was, it was too much. He never impressed me, either. GO DODGERS!!!

Kershaw doesn’t receive qualifying offer Blake Harris 4 hrs ago Comments | Sunday was the deadline for players to receive qualifying offers. The Dodgers had only three players eligible to receive them. They extended the offer to two.
Taylor and Corey Seager were each offered the one-year deal worth $18.4 million. Missing from the group was free agent Clayton Kershaw, who was eligible to receive one. You know what that means. Time to speculate.
I’m still a firm believer that Kershaw won’t pitch for another organization. I know he has ties to the Texas Rangers due to him being from Dallas, but it’s tough to see Kershaw pitching for one of the worst teams in baseball.
Kershaw missed the entirety of the Dodgers postseason with left forearm and elbow discomfort. The good news was that Kershaw wouldn’t need Tommy John surgery. It’s unclear as to whether or not his injury played a role in him not getting the offer.
If I were to guess, and this is completely speculation from my end, I would think Kershaw and the Dodgers are working on a new deal and they weren’t focused on a one-year contract. Again, that’s just my guess.
If Kershaw were to sign with another team, the Dodgers won’t receive a comp pick for him leaving.
An interesting offseason for Kershaw and the Dodgers certainly just got more intriguing.

I am also leaning in that direction - possibly a two year guaranteed with incentives. In the meantime, Kimbrel gets $16 mil for his half year with the White Sox during which he carried an ERA just north of five. I guess if you can get the ball anywhere near the plate it’s good for at least $15 mil annually. I don’t think Koufax got that his entire career combined. GO DODGERS!!!

This is always the time for speculation, of what team a player will play for next season. AS for Kersh, I really don't know what to predict, whether he'll sign another year with us, sign with his hometown Rangers or retire. But it seems he's been on the IL like eight times in the past five years and he's not getting any younger. Mad Max is 37 isn't he? Yet, he's pitching like he's 27 and never seems to get hurt. Our rotation for '22 is in disaray at this point, as is the Gnats'. Besides Ferris and Julio, who's a lock? Bauer we all know about, Mad Max is up in the air, May won't be ready to start the season and will join mid-season at the earliest, Gonzo is inconsistent, Pepiot and Miller won't be MLB ready for some time. So who'll we sign as FA or trade for? Kevin Gausman is a possibility as is teammate Andy Desclafani, Marcus Stroman and others. Our '22 rotation is due for a facelift.

May is already soft tossing, so there’s a chance he “may” be ready sooner than expected. I’d like to see them lock up Scherzer for another couple of years, maybe with a third year option. Kersh is a big question mark. I don’t want to see him in another uniform and I’m guessing that’s a general consensus around these parts. But does he come back for another year or two with an incentive laden contract and can we really depend on him for an entire season in our rotation? That’s a HUGE question. I still think Bauer gets his spot back in the rotation - but again, when that is and does Manturd throw another year suspension at him? If so, I think LA finds a way to void the contract and he’s a goner. The vulture really seemed to find himself after struggling at the start of the season and right after the All Star break. I wouldn’t give him the house, but he’s definitely worth Kimbrel money for a couple more years. I’d stay away from Desclafani - he flat out sucked with the Reds while he was here and I think last year was just a fluke, much like Alex Wood. I don’t know what was in the water in SF this year, but SOMETHING turned a VERY meh team into division champs and I don’t see them coming anywhere near that performance in 2022. The only thing I can think of that I DON’T EVER want to see again is a bullpen game every week or so. Not only did most of those games suck, they also put us in a TERRIBLE position in October and you could just see most of those guys were cooked. Whatever Cody found in October I hope he keeps and remembers in March. If Seager walks, he’s certainly replaceable with TT moving to his natural spot and perhaps a rotation of Lux, Taylor & Muncy at second. Move Bells back and PERMANENTLY to first and go after a big bat for the OF. 2022 can’t come soon enough and if these moronic Covid regulations go away and we can actually get on and enjoy first class flying again without masks and WITH drinks, we might very well be making a trip out in July for the All Star game at the Ravine. GO DODGERS!!!

free agency: Dodgers sign left-hander Andrew Heaney to one-year deal, per report
The Dodgers have already started working on rotation depth for 2022
Matt Snyder
MLB free agency just got going, but there's already been a noteworthy signing. The Dodgers have agreed to a one-year deal with left-handed starter Andrew Heaney, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The pact is worth $8.5 million, per ESPN's Jeff Passan.
This would be an upside play. Heaney, 30, has at times flashed the potential that at one time made him a first-round pick (ninth overall in 2012 out of Oklahoma State) but has never fully blossomed into the guy who was once a top 25 prospect, per MLB.com.
Heaney is 32-38 with a 4.72 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 650 strikeouts in 634 1/3 career innings. Last season, he had a 5.27 ERA with the Angels in 18 starts before being traded to the Yankees and things got worse. He appeared in 12 games after the deadline deal (five starts) and posted a 7.32 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. Perhaps the Dodgers can untap some of his innate talent. They've done it plenty of times before.
Interestingly, Heaney was once a member of the Dodgers for an incredibly brief window. During the 2014 Winter Meetings, he was traded from the Marlins to the Dodgers in a package most known for getting Dee Strange-Gordon to the Marlins while the Dodgers grabbed Kiké Hernández and Austin Barnes. Heaney was almost immediately flipped to the Angels, however, for Howie Kendrick.
Heaney joked about his time with the Dodgers in a tweet that made the rounds again on Monday.
rew Heaney @heandog8 Well, @dodgers we had a good run! Great to be a part of such a storied franchise. #thanksforthememories 9:41 PM · Dec 10, 2014
y did not rank among CBS Sports' top 50 MLB free agents.
It's difficult to get a grip on what the 2021 Dodgers' rotation might look like. Walker Buehler and Julio Urías are sure things, but that's it. Heaney joins Tony Gonsolin and David Price in the mix where the Dodgers would prefer to knock them down several rungs while also enjoying the depth they provide. Dustin May is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Clayton Kershaw is a free agent who didn't get a qualifying offer. Max Scherzer will be one of the most-coveted free agents on the market. Even if Trevor Bauer is eligible to rejoin the team after facing domestic violence allegations, who knows if the Dodgers even want him back. They don't have any prospects ready to step right into a rotation.
The bottom line is that while the Heaney signing adds depth and there is upside, by no means should this be interpreted as anything more than just a minor move.

Well, I know of one person happy to read that. He was a poster on the old MLB board. A contrarian by nature. He blasted Mark Walter for supposedly reckless spending. Painted a picture of starving widows & orphans in the snow because Walter wiped them out. He lamented the trade that sent Andrew Heaney away. Swore that we would come to regret it. I thought Howie Kendrick was a darn good player & we got him cheap.
Now Heaney gets to come back & rip Walter off. The demon. He deserves it, for what he did to those women & children.

8.5 million for Heaney? Is it April fools day already? Cmon, WTF? 8.5 cents would be an overpay. Nice start to our off-season, NOT!

Dodgers' Andrew Heaney: Reaches deal with Dodgers Rotowire NOV 8, 2021 Heaney signed a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Dodgers on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Heaney had a very poor 2021 season, at least judging by his 5.83 ERA. The ERA estimators all liked him far more than that, however, with SIERA (3.84) and xERA (4.01) being the most optimistic. The Dodgers clearly believe there's still something there for the 30-year-old lefty, whose 26.9 percent strikeout rate and 7.3 percent walk rate were both quite good. He needs to cut the homers to be an effective starter, however, and his 33.1 percent groundball rate suggests he may not be able to take a large step forward in that area, though some positive regression in his 18.1 percent HR/FB rate should help somewhat.
