MLB rumors: Clayton Kershaw unsure about future with Dodgers; Mets not closing door on Kris Bryant trade
Here's what's buzzing around MLB for Thursday By Dayn Perry

Dodgers lefty, franchise legend, and future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw is eligible for free agency next offseason, which means that 2021 will be a walk year for him. He turns 34 next month, and he's endured some level of decline since his peak. That said, Kershaw's deep repertoire and exceptional command have allowed him to cope quite well with velocity loss, and he figures to remain a high-quality starting pitcher for at least the near- to mid-term. So surely the Dodgers lifer will finish out his career in L.A., right? To hear Kershaw himself tell it, maybe not. Here's this excerpt from a longer piece on Kershaw by Jorge Castillo of The Los Angeles Times:
This will be the first time Kershaw enters a season with free agency looming. He said he hasn't discussed a contract extension with the Dodgers. Does he want one?
"I don't know," he said. "Honestly, I wish I had an answer."
Kershaw is entering the final year of his three-year, $93 million pact, which he signed after using an opt-out in his previous contract. As Castillo notes, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman confirms that the two sides have yet to talk about a new contract, but Friedman also noted the obvious reality that Kershaw in an ideal world would finish his career as a Dodger. Speaking of which, retirement is a possibility for Kershaw, given that he and his wife Ellen have three school-age children, and so is signing with a team closer to his Dallas home. Whatever the ultimate outcome, uncertainty right now reigns when it comes to Kershaw's future with the Dodgers.

I was fully expecting that after Trevor Bauer's deal. Kareem did that after Magic signed a 25 million dollar contract.
Would another three year contract be fair? Clayton has to realize he's a significant injury risk. That's not going to get better as he ages. He got three years & $93,000,000 the last time. Bauer got three years & $102,000,000. I would be willing to give Kershaw $103,000,000 if some of it was based on incentives. Appearances, innings, etc. Would he feel insulted?

Dodgers' Gus Varland: Acquired by Dodgers Rotowire 2 HRS AGO Varland and Sheldon Neuse were traded from the Athletics to the Dodgers on Friday in exchange for Adam Kolarek and Cody Thomas, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
The right-hander missed out on the 2020 campaign due to the cancelation of the minor-league season, but he could end up at Double-A this year. Varland last pitched at High-A and had a 2.39 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 27:8 K:BB over 26.1 innings.
Dodgers' Sheldon Neuse: Shipped to Dodgers Rotowire 2 HRS AGO Neuse and Gus Varland were traded from the Athletics to the Dodgers on Friday in exchange for Adam Kolarek and Cody Thomas, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Neuse made his big-league debut in 2019 and had a .250/.295/.304 slash line in 61 plate appearances, but he spent the entirety of the 2020 campaign at the alternate training site. The 26-year-old didn't have a clear path to playing time in Oakland with Matt Chapman at third base and Tony Kemp and Chad Pinder at second base, so he'll receive a fresh start with the Dodgers. Neuse also figures to have a tough time cracking the majors with his new club, but the team is currently without any clear options at third base with Justin Turner still a free agent.
Dodgers' Enny Romero: Gets invitation to spring training Rotowire 13 HRS AGO Romero has been invited to the Dodgers' big-league camp, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
Romero signed a minor-league deal with the Dodgers this offseason after pitching internationally for the past two campaigns. Prior to going abroad, he had limited success as a reliever in five seasons at the big-league level, racking up a 5.12 ERA with 156 strikeouts across 146 innings. While the Dodgers have a fairly full bullpen depth chart, Romero will hope to latch on as a depth option and make the team out of spring training.
Dodgers' Josh Sborz: Cast off 40-man roster Rotowire 22 HRS AGO Sborz was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Thursday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
Sborz was sent down by the Dodgers in September, and he'll now be removed from the 40-man roster to make room for right-hander Trevor Bauer. Sborz has made 11 relief appearances for the Dodgers over the past two seasons, posting a 6.08 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 13.1 innings.

Dodgers' Kyle Hurt: Traded to Dodgers Rotowire 2 HRS AGO Hurt and Alex Vesia were traded from the Marlins to the Dodgers on Friday in exchange for Dylan Floro, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Hurt was evidently interesting to the Dodgers, but it will likely be quite some time before he's pitching for them. Selected in the fifth and final round of last year's draft, Hurt has yet to make his professional debut due to the canceled minor-league season. He has some upside but will have to sort out his control issues before making good on it.
Dodgers' Alex Vesia: Heading to Dodgers Rotowire 3 HRS AGO Vesia and an additional prospect were traded from the Marlins to the Dodgers on Friday in exchange for Dylan Floro, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Vesia made his big-league debut in 2020 and struggled with nine earned runs allowed over 4.1 innings, and he'll now be heading to the Dodgers. The 24-year-old made nine appearances at the Double-A level in 2019 and delivered 16.1 scoreless innings with a 25:1 K:BB, and he could compete for a bullpen spot in Los Angeles.

Think I heard or read somewhere that becoming a professional athlete in any of the big four is about as likely as winning the lottery. The talent pool is that deep and I know personally that it’s true. I was a pretty decent athlete in high school - played the big three, but baseball was my fav. A teammate of mine and I went down for an open tryout for the local Redlegs. As “decent” as I was, Nicky was a TRUE stud. Great glove and arm. Power and hit for average. And speed! This dude was SO fast. He didn’t even qualify for his forty time, so you can imagine how bad I looked running it. We left laughing and went a had a couple drafts. GO DODGERS!!!

If Clayton does retire or otherwise leave us, I'm not worried about the rotation. As the Yankees' dynasty has been all about great hitters since the Babe, the Dodgers' dynasty has been about great rotations. WE've always replaced great starters with new ones. Josiah Gray is ready to step up, even if not to start the season. He'll be in the bullpen for a time and will fill in if one of the starters gets hurt. Clayton Beeter and Bobby Miller are supposed to ready by the '23 season, but you never know, they could be ready next year. Landon Knack is supposed to be ready by '22. THose three pitchers were drafted last summer and they all have great promise. Mitch White has sure payed his dues and is ready. And then there's Gerardo Carrillo who needs work Trading for and singing a FA starters is always an option as we did with Bauer.

The ginger geezer gets another two years; they can certainly do the same to keep Kershaw in blue for his entire career.
Nothing looked worse to me than seeing Hershiser finish his career in a lousy Cleveland uniform.
GO DODGERS!!!

Nothing looked worse to me than seeing Hershiser finish his career in a lousy Cleveland uniform. GO DODGERS!!! Thanks. Dodgers' Justin Turner: Re-signing with Dodgers Rotowire 12 HRS AGO Turner announced via his personal Twitter account Saturday he is re-signing with the Dodgers. The 36-year-old has spent the past seven seasons in Los Angeles, and it's not a major surprise to see him returning to the team after winning the World Series in October. According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Turner will receive $34 million over two years, and the deal also includes a $14 million club option for a third year. He had a .307/.400/.460 slash line with four homers, nine doubles and 23 RBI in 42 games last season, and he should continue to operate as the Dodgers' starting third baseman in 2021.

They are loaded on starting pitchers. There's always the sentimental thing since he is the best pitcher since Koufax and Hershiser but if he stays he's going to have to take a big and significant pay cut on like a two year deal.

I'm a little surprised about the money $17 million a year. He deserves it but I had thought it would be lower. I think someone or someones will need to go in order to bring down the payroll for this year unless they don't care about paying the tax.

But how do you move that contract? Well, Price too. Same thing.
