The King of Scotland...Forest Whitaker has been underrated a tad in his career in my opinion. I was scrolling the other day and have only seen it once but I will sit down and watch it with the wife, Papillon with McQueen and Hoffman. Panic Room & Repo Men.

Atonement (2007)- if you have time with the wife or girlfriend. Makes you wonder.

'Wyatt Earp' was on yesterday. Kevin Costner, as well as the dragging pace of that movie, overshadowed a brilliant performance by Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday. But it got me to thinking. I had read Stuart Lake's book & knew Earp lived & died in Los Angeles. This is an ever-changing landscape. Where did he live?
Turns out it was 4004 West 17th Street, between Arlington & Crenshaw & Venice & Washington Blvd. It's a school parking lot now. Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Middle School. It was a bungalow in Wyatt's day. Wonder how Mr. Earp would feel knowing that his home became the parking lot named after an attorney best known for getting OJ Simpson off for decapitating a white woman & putting the LAPD on trial instead. Life's little ironies.
I swung by there this morning. Lot of cars in the lot. It was too early for kids, but I was left wondering if they're open. I almost got out to ask a crossing guard, but nah. The main thing was touching the ground where that bungalow was.

Death Race is on & I'm highly disappointed Pamela Landy from the Bourne movies is playing such an asshole as the warden.

I love the scene from Raising Arizona where Nicholas Cage kills Randy Cobb. Cobb was so evil. After he's blown up you see parts of him raining down on the highway.
"Give me that baby, you wart hog from hell!"

Part of the appeal of Training Day is the familiar neighborhood. Eva Mendez's character lived on Palmdale Drive. My youngest's mother lived on Coco Ave., just a few blocks away. After we broke up she got an apartment on Coliseum. Her boyfriend was a psycho. The only thing that probably saved me was my audacity. He kept calling me at work & the secretary would tell him I wasn't there or was in a meeting. Finally I just took the damn call.
"Tom?"
"This is him."
"Are you fucking Lo?"
"Yup."
There was a momentary pause while he thought about this.
"Maybe I'll fuck your wife then."
"Why not you too?"
Then I just hung up.
Later Tony caught her with another man in her bedroom. He crashed the door down & this poor slob jumped through a window to get away. Lo told me about this. He was in the hospital.
"So how's he doing?"
She looked ashamed.
"I haven't actually gone to see him."
I studied her & just shook my head.
But that movie always takes me back. Excellent flick.

A guy you’d want to have a few beers with and at the same time want to put a bullet in his skull. Brilliant! GO DODGERS!!!

Caught Wild At Heart last night on TCM. Probably my fav David Lynch movie because it’s one of the few, despite its many eccentricities and like characters that actually has a story that’s somewhat “followable”.
Nicholas Cage gives his usual over the top performance as Sailor, a two bit criminal who Laura Dern can’t live without. They’re on the road and run from her mother who disapproves of Sailor and hires two PI’s / Hit Men to track them down.
Cage does an excellent “Treat Me Like A Fool” at a thrash metal bar that the band just happens to know the music to. The constant references to The Wizard of Oz are apparent throughout.
Small cameos by Sherilyn Fenn and Sheryl Lee (from Twin Peaks) round out the cast which also includes Harry Dean Stanton, Diane Ladd, Willem DeFoe and several other Peaks minor characters.
I do like most of what Lynch has produced, but some of his work is just bizarre. Films like Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, both of which I have on DVD and I’ve watched multiple times, yet I still don’t quite “get”.
I LOVED the original Twin Peaks series when it aired on ABC. It was like nothing that any of us had ever seen. But the prequel film Fire Walk With Me was a mess and nearly impossible to follow.
And the reboot series on Showtime? Don’t even get me started on it. There was one episode that consisted strictly of the showing of the outside of a building - like some sort of train or electrical station - I’m still not sure.
There were different noises in the audio, but for 47 minutes, that was the ENTIRE episode. No characters, no dialogue - NOTHING. We kept watching it waiting for something, anything to happen, but it never did.
Then there were the two Agent Cooper’s, a parallel universe (I think?) - it was all just a complete waste of time over a couple of months.
GO DODGERS!!!

Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island - Mr. Roarke (played by Michael Peña) before Tattoo. Caught this one the other night on Showtime or Starz or one of the other eight zillion movie channels we have.
Another one with a bunch of nobody’s, other than the very hot Maggie Q and Michael Rooker in a small and short appearance.
Five strangers come to the island to have their fantasies fulfilled, yet all seem connected to just one previous event in their lives as well as to the island owner Roarke.
Not bad, but glad I didn’t drop $15 at the box office for it. A solid two and a half stars.

Next with our old buddy Nick Cage was on last night. He plays a Vegas magician named Frank Cadillac who is clairvoyant, but can only see a couple of minutes into the future.
He sees his “dream girl” (Jessica Biel - more reason to hate Justin Timberlake!) and he suddenly sees a future with her well beyond the couple of minutes he was blessed with at birth.
The Feds find out about his abilities and want to use him to stop a nuclear bomb that has been stolen and set to go off somewhere between LA & Denver.
He’s on the run with Biel from both them as well as the dudes that have the bomb. Again, no spoiler on the ending here.
Pretty good with Cage rather subdued as opposed to his normal crazed self. And Biel is smokin’ hot. A solid three stars.
