Here’s a couple more from last night’s viewing menu:
Safe House - action / espionage thriller with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. Again I ask - has Denzel ever made a bad movie? He’s great as always in this one as a rogue former agent that has a lot of dirt on just about every intelligence agency in the world.
On the run from the bad guys and wanted by just about every one of these agencies, he checks himself into the US Embassy in South Africa where Ryan Reynolds mans the “safe house” within.
He is tortured via waterboarding for the information during which the house is attacked. Both he and Reynolds escape and are on the run from there.
As always, I won’t spoil the ending, but I give this one a thumbs up.
The Last Movie Star - Burt Reynolds basically playing himself as an aging movie star invited to a film festival in Nashville, TN to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Chevy Chase (when did he get SO old - I actually initially mistook him for Larry David!) plays his buddy that talks him into going to the ceremony.
The first class accommodations promised turn out to be significantly less than expected and the festival itself turns out to be the workings of several young men and @ 100 fans in a local bar.
I believe this was the Bandit’s last film, but what a sweet and sentimental way to go out. BIG thumbs up on this one.

Denzel schools Reynolds & Reynolds schools him right back. Excellent flick.

Bad Boys For Life - Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return for the third in this series and like most sequels, it doesn’t measure up to the original although I liked it better than the second one.
This one starts with Marcus (Lawrence) considering retirement and Mike (Smith) trying to talk him out of it. The wife of an old foe who Mike killed sends their son to kill all responsible for his death, including the judge, prosecutor and of course, Mike.
Lots of great driving and chase scenes - Mike has a sweet new Porsche in Dodger blue and he & Marcus are forced to join a special tactical team to go after the bad guys.
No spoiler here, but there will definitely be a fourth installment based on the “during credits” clip that seems to show up in every film these days.
Good action and a number of comical moments. A solid thumbs up for this one.

Bloodshot - Vin Diesel plays a modern day grunt soldier with more scars than someone who might have gone a few rounds with Freddy Krueger. The film is based on a comic book character, but not one from the usual Marvel line.
After his latest mission, he returns home to his hot wife only to be drugged and taken hostage by the Jihadi who want information on who gave him the orders and location of his last mission, which ended with him killing everyone in sight, including an important Jihad (and possibly this Jihad’s brother - I kinda dozed off for a few seconds so I’m not sure if they were related or not).
As Diesel’s character continues to deny knowledge of where he got the intel, they bring in his wife and don’t waste too much time before they kill both her and Diesel.
He is brought back to life by a crazy reanimator and given super strength and healing powers. While recovering, he meets several others who have suffered his same fate and been brought back from the dead, including the hotter than fire Eiza González.
While most of his memory has been erased, he still had traces of the events which led to his death and he immediately sets his sights on revenge against the dude that killed both him and his wife.
Another pretty decent flick if you’re into comic book action types. Diesel pretty much plays the same bad ass character he always plays and the ending is pretty much as expected, leaving room for a sequel or two. I give it three out of five stars.

Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry - here’s a TRUE oldie but goodie that I saw back when I was just a kid as part of a triple feature at the old Dent Drive-In. They used to call it the “Dirty Dent” as it was known for showing soft core porn every now and then.
It was the opening feature which was followed by the original Vanishing Point and the third movie I cannot even remember other than it feature a LOT of female nudity and we had to swear to my uncle who took us we wouldn’t tell our mom’s about.
12 year olds with raging hormones seeing Playboy models on the big screen? Are you kidding? All we wanted to know was when we were coming back!
Getting back to the movie that showed up last night around 3:00 am on FXM, Peter Fonda stars as Larry, a wannabe NASCAR driver along with his mechanic played by Adam Rourke. He’s a pretty good driver, but they don’t have the money to build a car good enough to break into the sport.
They decide to pull off a robbery and from there they are on the run from Johnny Law pretty much the rest of the film.
Mary, played by a very young and very hot Susan George plays Larry’s love interest who tags along for the ride. I think her entire role was to look hot in her braless halter top & low cut jeans and that’s about it.
Not a lot of great acting or dialogue, but some great driving and chase seems and an ending that’ll make you jump. Thumbs up!

Young Guns was on this morning. The first one. Really good movie. I was looking up Billy the Kid stuff. Someone bought this picture at a flea market for $10.00 www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5084943/Fourth-photo-Billy-Kid-flea-market.htmlIt's worth millions. But my immediate thought was, Billy was that tall? I always thought of him as a little guy. Emilio Estavez (sp?) played him in the movie. That guy is 5'-4" - 5'-5". 5'-8" was above average for the time. So I learned Billy the Kid was slightly on the tall side.

Jon Bon Jovi wrote a decent soundtrack for Part II, but that’s about it. And his five or ten seconds of screen time should have hit the cutting room floor. GO DODGERS!!!

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn - Okay, let me start off with the fact that you likely need to be a huge DC Comics geek to enjoy this one. I have enjoyed a number of these theatrical productions including her and her character in the previously released Suicide Squad.
The big question was could that character (played by the hot and somewhat adorable Margot Robbie) hold ones interest on her own for nearly two hours? My answer would be no.
She narrates the entire film in character and although there are some amusing moments and some decent fight scenes with her Birds of Prey co-stars, it fell well short of expectations for me.
I actually dozed off several times throughout and the biggest activity I did today was run the Benz down the street to put air in its tires. And that was after getting up at around 2:30 in the afternoon!
Like most of these, it’s very likely to spawn sequels for both Quinn and the Birds. I doubt that I’ll be checking in on either unless I’m REALLY bored.

Midway - An epic battle for control of the Pacific as told by Dick Best (Ed Skrein), Edwin Layton, (Patrick Wilson), Chester Nimitz (Woody Harrelson), Wade McClusky (Luke Evans), William Halsey (Dennis Quaid) and Jimmy Doolittle (Aaron Eckhart).
All six are excellent in their roles and the two and a half hours went by in a flash. Some of the best and most realistic flying scenes I’ve seen on the big screen.
I’ve heard the term “dive bombers” hundred of times but I never knew it was started by describing US pilots that would actually aim their planes straight down toward the enemy ships before dropping their bombs and pulling up at the last minute.
I also learned the Japanese tortured and killed over 500,000 Chinese for helping Doolittle and his squadron reach safety after most crash landed there.
We all know how ruthless the Japanese were in the bombing of Pearl, which gets the movie started, although nowhere near the degree as shown in previously released Pearl Harbor.
They truly thought they could take Midway and from there, the U.S. west coast. Layton refused to cede on his intelligence and as it was ignored and we paid the ultimate price at Pearl, this time the commanders took it to heart.
As it turned out, he was only off by a few miles and five minutes and by then, the Japanese fleet had already fallen into the well placed trap we expected them to.
I was actually cheering the screen when we took those bastards out and they had no other choice than to retreat with their tails between their legs. It was the beginning of the end of WWII.
Not really a dull moment in the entire film and I give it a big thumbs up, especially if you like historical war movies that provide a decent and accurate account of those events.

Hard Times was on a little while ago. It's either that or Death Hunt for best Charles Bronson flick ever, IMHO. Big Bronson fan! Liked him in the original The Mechanic with Jan Michael Vincent (although the remake with Jason Statham was really good, too) as well as 10 to Midnight with Andrew Stevens, Lisa Eilbacher, a very young Kelly Preston and Playboy Playmates Jeana Tomasina and Ola Ray. Jeana was one of my fav 80’s pin-ups and went on to be one of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Never saw the show, but did see some photos of her on it and she really hit the wall hard. GO DODGERS!!! That was one of my gradfather's guy. He named his German Sheppard Bronson.

The most recent western I really liked is the remake of 3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crow and Christian Bale. Byron McElroy: Keep on talking... all the way to Yuma, right up them steps, to the rope, straight to Hell. Ben Wade: Day I die, Byron, I'm getting sprung from Hell!

The King of Scotland...Forest Whitaker has been underrated a tad in his career in my opinion.
I was scrolling the other day and have only seen it once but I will sit down and watch it with the wife, Papillon with McQueen and Hoffman.
