Tusk - wow, I don’t know what to say about this one. Written and directed by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay & Silent Bob), this movie is funny at times, sad and just flat out BIZARRE!
Wallace (Justin Long) and Teddy (Haley Joel Osment) are the wisecracking co-hosts of "The Not-See Party", a popular podcast focused on bizarre viral videos and humorous interviews with the internet-famous.
The concept is simple - Wallace travels the country conducting outlandish videos and returns to their make-shift studio to share his stories with Teddy and the listeners.
When Wallace ventures to Canada for an interview that falls through at the last minute, he stops at a local bar for a drink and finds a flyer posted by an old adventurer (Michael Parks) who seeks to share his stories with anyone who will listen.
Arriving at the old man's secluded estate under the shroud of darkness, Wallace is promptly treated to a hot cup of tea and stories of how the adventurer met and knew Ernest Hemingway
When Wallace notices a strange, large black bone being displayed on the fireplace mantle, he naturally inquires to its origin. Turns out it is from a male walrus’ penis.
The adventurer goes on to weave a strange yarn of being rescued by a walrus following a shipwreck at sea and the odd 6 month relationship he had with this walrus while waiting to be rescued. It is not outright stated to have included anything sexual, but that is the inference I got - I know - EEEWWW!!!
It all seems like the perfect fodder for an unforgettable podcast until Wallace blacks out and regains consciousness bound to a wheelchair. He is told by the adventurer that a recluse spider had bit him and the poison was spreading so fast the only way to save his life was via amputation of the leg by a “local doctor”. But there is something much more sinister going on as Wallace soon discovers.
Meanwhile, after both receive terrified voicemails from Wallace, Teddy and Wallace's girlfriend (hottie Genesis Rodriguez) venture north to investigate his sudden disappearance.
They meet a quirky and fairly amusing detective (overplayed hilariously by Johnny Depp) who has been tracking a serial killer of 20 plus young men who he believes the adventurer to be.
In the meantime, the old man subjects his terrified guest to a bizarre medical procedure that will transform more than just his perception of one of the sea's most majestic creatures..
As usual, I won’t divulge the ending but it, like the entire movie itself is equally bizarre and sad. There is some commentary from Smith during the credit roll and the obligatory ten seconds blip of Depp after that.
I give it ⚾️⚾️ 1/2.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels just finished up. That movie is my sense of humor in a nutshell. Deeply sarcastic & cynical.

Tenet - Christopher Nolan’s latest attempt to completely blow the minds of viewers does not disappoint.
At times, a complete mess of confusion and nearly impossible to follow with garbled and / or hard to hear and understand dialogue.
I started watching it a few nights ago a gave up after around 30 minutes. I gave it another shot last night and while I did make it through the entire two and a half hours, I’m still not completely sure what I watched and / or what it was all about.
The story line goes somewhere along the lines of a mad Russian (played perfectly by Kenneth Branagh) who has discovered how to time travel and his plan to destroy the world with this knowledge and equipment.
John David Washington and Robert Pattinson (yep - the Twilight vamp) play deep undercover CIA agents hired to stop him.
There is a significant amount of back and forth between two time periods, some good car chases and of course, explosions that happen in one period and reverse themselves in the other.
I thought of it as a VERY complicated Bond film with a touch of “Inception” and “The Matrix” mixed in.
I may have to watch it again (as recommended by many on IMDb); for now, I give it a solid ⚾️⚾️⚾️.

The Voices - a VERY dark comedy starring our old buddy Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) as a disturbed serial killer who can “talk to the animals”, but not in a good, Dr. Doolittle way.
As a boy, Jerry (Reynolds) was traumatized by the marriage of his German mother to a cruel and sadistic Army major who drove the mother to near suicide and begged Jerry to “finish the job”, which he did.
He was institutionalized until his twenties at which time he was released under the care of a state psychiatrist and of course, a daily prescription of feel good drugs which he stopped taking at the advise of his cat, Mr. Whiskers.
His dog, Gus tries to keep Jerry on the level, but Mr. Whiskers is the more influential of the two, and also the funniest. Both are voiced by Reynolds - Gus sounds like a wise old grandfather while Mr. Whiskers is a foul mouthed Irish punk.
Jerry works at a plumbing supply company where they manufacture prefabricated tub & shower inserts and the company’s official colour is pink, which is reflected in the jumpsuits all factory workers wear.
He has a thing for Fiona (Gemma Atherton) and she ends up being his first victim due to “the voices”.
Next up is Lisa (Anna Kendrick) and then Alison (Ella Smith) who goes to his home above a bowling alley to look for her two missing friends and co-workers.
The ending is fairly surreal and a bit goofy, but then again so is the entire movie. Mr. Whiskers has most of the best lines and that accent coming from the mouth of an orange tabby is pretty funny.
It’s not drop dead hysterical but it was slightly amusing 90 minutes. I’d give it a solid ⚾️⚾️ 1/2.

I am so sick of cats being stereotyped like that!
Anyway, Contraband was on last night. One of my favorite (with 'Shooter') Mark Wahlberg flicks. He plays a smuggler forced into doing one last job to save his brother.

He plays a smuggler forced into doing one last job to save his brother. I’ve seen most of his films and have liked them all, including this one. He’s really creepy and maniacal in Fear with Reese Witherspoon, but he played it to the hilt. GO DODGERS!!!

Man on Fire just going off. Yes, its perverse, but I like seeing those crooked cops get tortured. The one arrogant SOB who asks Denzel if he knows who he is. Then Denzel cuts one of his fingers off to show how impressed he is.
The big shot Washington puts a bomb in. "This is a charger. Convicts stick it up their rectum. This is C-4. That's what you have up your ass right now."

I, Tonya with Margot Robbie (YUM!) in the title role just wrapped up. It is, of course the story of Tonya Harding, her life and the bizarre events that led to her and Nancy Kerrigan’s clash in the Olympics.
Her mother, played by Allison Janney (of The West Wing & Mom) is a pure example of foul mouthed white trash and takes advantage of the F word almost as much as Tony Montana.
Harding’s husband (based on her account) was a REAL asshole who beat her on an almost daily basis, yet she kept returning to like so many abused women do.
The story is told from the viewpoint of Tonya, her mom and husband and we all know how the story ended.
It was billed as a comedy and there were some funny lines, especially out of Janney, who won an Oscar for her sarcastic wit and domineering promotion of Tonya’s career.
Not great, but I’ve certainly sat through and spent a couple hours on far worse. ⚾️⚾️ 1/2.

Got tickets for Saturday night to see the latest Fast & Furious in our favourite theatre that has those X-Box seats that move with action on the screen.
Love those movies for some reason. They’re pretty mindless, but the cars, the chases and stunts are just SO over the top they entertain and make me smile.
Review to follow next week.

As promised - Fast and Furious Nine. As expected, two and a half hours of unbelievable car chases and absurd stunts that did not disappoint this viewer.
The D-Box seats were amazing and put us right in the seat and middle of every action sequence.
The movie starts with the backstory between Dom (Vin Diesel), his little brother Jakob (Jon Sena) and their stock car driver father.
It evolves into brother versus brother each trying to recover a device and its key that could control all satellites and thus all weapons of all nations.
Jakob is working for a Richy Rich rogue tyrant while Dom once again is working under the “guise” of the Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) and the US government.
An old friend of the “gang” returns (I won’t divulge who) and the cars are as hot as the usual array of tight dress dancing girls.
Charlize Theron has a few moments of screen time and while I’ve already seen a number of Tweets complaining about her haircut, I wasn’t looking at her coif as much as I was her skin tight red leather pants & black wifebeater.
I’ve also seen reviews and Tweets complaining about the impossibllity of most of the stunts and vehicle sequences.
Uh - hello. You didn’t know that going in based on the previous eight (nine, if you include the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff) features?
It’s ALL about OUTDOING the previous one and is why this franchise continues to produce a new “episode” every couple of years.
People STILL enjoy them and are willing to pay $30 (or $50 if you want the seats like we had) to see them.
And they will continue to do so until we stop going.
By the way - stay for the credits. There is a hidden scene around three or four minutes in showing another returning character and assuring that F & F 10 is in the works.
I give it a solid ⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️ for the action and stunts alone. This isn’t Shakespeare and don’t expect Hopkins / Streep acting or dialogue.
But for the usual and expected amount of fun and action, you can’t go wrong with this series.

The Bourne Identity is on. Damon just shot-gunned the assassin in a field. Is that Clive Owen?
