MLB Rumors: Do the Cubs have a Cody Bellinger backup plan?
The Chicago Cubs opted to keep Cody Bellinger at the MLB Trade Deadline — a decision that was the right move for a club climbing into contention at the time. Bellinger is signed through the end of this season, and has a mutual option for 2024. If he keeps performing at this level, there's a good chance he could test the free-agent market.
Bellinger is red hot, slashing .328/.379/.556 on the season with 18 home runs. While not fully resembling his 2019 NL MVP season per say, this is as close as Bellinger has been since he fell off a cliff statistically.
Should Bellinger sign elsewhere for a large contract — which is well within his right — the Cubs have a built-in long term backup plan. Prior to the trade deadline, USA Today's Bob Nightengale said this on local Chicago radio:
"I think there's zero chance that they would re-sign him as a free agent," Nightengale told the Jack Vita Show. "His agent is Scott Boras. He's had a big year, so I would think that there will be a massive price tag on him, over $100 million. So I think he's going to be sitting out until next February, signing right around spring training… I wouldn't be surprised if they ask for at least $150 million."
Ian Happ and Seuya Suzuki are signed through 2026, and Chicago has one of the more exciting young outfield prospects in Pete Crow-Armstrong making his way through the minor-league ranks. He's expected to make his debut sometime in 2024.
As painful as losing a player like Bellinger may be, Chicago is prepared for it. Crow-Armstrong has the talent to be a Gold Glove-caliber defender for a reason.

First - oh, how the mighty have fallen. Cody could have made so much more than 150 million dollars.
Second - I wouldn't give him 150 million dollars. He's not a bad guy. I think he's lazy though. He got 'punished' for that by ONLY receiving about 17 million dollars this year. He's 28 years old & has grossed over 58 million dollars in his career to date. He really applies himself this year, & the lesson learned was he can cash in for another 150 million dollars. I would only do this if it was a JD Drew type of contract. The one the Red Sox signed with Drew. Not the one he got from the Dodgers. Various incentives for staying on the field. Roberts can platoon Cody if he's playing like shit. Friedman likes that stuff anyway.
Some meatheads, like the Mets, will give Cody over 200 million bucks. Sayanora.

As much as I like the dude, feel he’d be a good hang and wouldn’t mind seeing more of his mom and sister, I don’t even think he’d be worth $100 mil, unless that’s maybe over seven to ten years. And if he regresses back to the last couple of seasons with LA - always hurt and constant tinkering with his batting stance - well then he’s just another Max Muncy / Chris Taylor with better defense. You’d think the Mutts would have learned their lesson this year trying to buy a title - but you’re probably right. They or the Spanks or dare we say the Stains will give him some ridiculous contract and both he and Boras will be laughing all the way to the bank. GO DODGERS!!!

Bellinger now batting .324-20-64 / .372 / .561. Just 59 strikeouts in 387 plate appearances.
As a refresher, he hit .210-19-68 / .265 / .389 w/ 150 K's in 550 plate appearances with the Dodgers last year. 15% strikeout rate this year. 27% last year. The Cubs have played 76% of their schedule. At this pace Cody would hit 26 homers & drive in 96 runs. So 100 RBI's is easily within reach. His projected 167 hits would surpass his last two seasons combined.
If only he could have done this HERE.

He made out pitchers look bad back in April with I think 2 homers in 3 games in LA. I'm rather see the Gnats in the wild card series then the Baby Bears so he can't get revenge. The Commies are on their way to sweeping the Angels tonite and they, with the Snakes, have, for now, displaced both the Gnats and Baby Bears as 2 of the 3 wild cards. But as for signing him in the winter, I say forget it. Our top priority should be to lock up Julio, our only lefty starter if Kersh retires. Both Julio and Cody have Scott Boros representing them, so bang would go the payroll to compete with the Muts. I'm betting Cody will be an Oriole next year.

I liked the way the Red Sox treated JD Drew, after DePo gave him 5 years & $55,000,000 guaranteed. They had various performance clauses based on plate appearances. You play, you get paid. You dog it, we cut you loose. DePo had given DREW an opt-out after two years. That's how we got rid of him. Base any (goes for any team that signs him) contract on incentives. Not a guaranteed contract. I'm not sure, but suspect the lack of interest shown in him this past winter might just be reflective of a general skepticism over Cody's work ethic.

Cody now batting .320-20-75 / .366 / .543. Just a bit of a lull. Word on Twitter yesterday via Boras interview was Cody was still hurt those last two years with LA due to his shoulder and was only around 35%. According to his agent, LA forced him to play through / with this injury which was the reason for his constant tinkering with his batting stances so that he could hit with the least amount of pain. Sounds like a bunch of BS to me, but if you look at what just happened to Catman, it doesn’t seem completely unreasonable. A 35% Bellinger was probably better than anyone else we could have put out there, especially defensively. And even with his average and power numbers what they were, was he that much worse than the multi-member .200 club on this years roster? Maybe the ganj in the Midwest IS better than the west coast, although I sincerely doubt it based on my own personal experience. GO DODGERS!!!

Hard to believe Cody would want to come back to the Dodgers, or the Dodgers would want Cody back. That sounds toxic. It sounds like BS to me too. He's changed his approach this year. He compensated for the loss in power. It's clear from his numbers. 20 homeruns. Not 47. Way less strikeouts. Higher batting average. Sad to see Cody burning bridges like this. He comes off like a spoiled child.

An injured pitcher is a whole 'nother matter than an injured position player. Pitchers will be laid up a good deal longer cos they repeat the same motion over and over.

Catman hasn’t looked right most of this year. If he was trying to “pitch thru” the pain and / or injury, that was a bad decision. But if LA knew about the injury and elected to continue sending him out there every fifth day, that was a worse decision. He’s never been or never will be considered an “ace”. He’s a “serviceable” pitcher who normally will give you five or six innings with a few hits and runs. He’s now looking at 2025 before he gets near a mound and by that time, he will likely just be a memory or possible long reliever for LA. With Grove, Miller, Pepper and company, we’ll also have May and Buehler back, possibly still have Urias and with Kershaw, who knows? I imagine he’s going to want to pitch another year or two, even if it means an IL trip or two each year. He’s still one of the best in the game and his new curve and off speed stuff is looking more and more Maddox every time he takes the mound. If there’s one thing for certain, we can never have too much pitching. Look no further than this season for proof of that. GO DODGERS!!!

Trea Turner has been on an unholy terror since August 4th. 45 / 119 = .378-13-34 in 29 games. 9 doubles & a triple. 5 out of 5 in stolen bases.
So his line to date is .265-23-68 / .316 / .458. 26 out of 26 in SB's.
If I coulda known Urias was going to take a dump in his drawers, I would have been behind re-upping Trea.

My, how the salaries between MLB & the NFL have grown. Drew got $55 mil over five years. The local Bungles just signed Burrow for that SAME amount. But that’s his ANNUAL per diem. And for FIVE years which equal $275 mil (with production incentives & bonuses); but $219 mil is guaranteed. We’ve seen this movie before as well. Last time, it was Carson Palmer who Uncle Mikey blew his wad on. Unfortunately, he had nothing left to pay for an offensive line, RB’s or WR’s. Palmer got killed and spent more time on his back than feet. He finally refused to play and demanded / got traded. Part Two is just getting started, but it certainly looks to be a repeat of the Palmer saga. GO DODGERS!!!
