Clayton Kershaw’s New Deal With Dodgers Could Reach $37.5M Over Two Years
Story by Ella Bennet • 1h
Clayton Kershaw, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ seasoned pitcher, has the potential to earn a significant income of up to $37.5 million across the span of his newly signed two-year contract. His earnings are contingent upon the number of pitching starts he makes following his recent shoulder surgery.
His contract, which was publicized last Friday, carries a guaranteed amount of $10 million. The left-hander’s deal was designed to potentially accumulate up to $12.5 million throughout 2024 and an additional $25 million in 2025.
Kershaw’s base salary for 2024 is set at $5 million, with an array of performance bonuses that could top up to $7.5 million extra. These bonuses are tied to a specified number of starts or pitching appearances lasting at least three innings. After making ten starts or lengthy relief appearances, he could earn bonuses in an ascending scale that was detailed in the contract information released to The Associated Press.
The experienced pitcher also has a $5 million player option for 2025. This option has a potential to increase by $15 million based on the same performance measures: the number of starts or relief appearances of at least three innings. If Kershaw can maintain his health through the 2024 season, he stands to gain considerably from this incentive structure.
His earnings for the 2025 season are intricately linked to his 2024 performance, with the contract illustrating five different scenarios in which Kershaw’s bonuses would vary:
— Depending on the number of starts or lengthy relief outings in 2024, Kershaw could accrue as much as $18 million in 2025, earning $1 million for each game from the eighth to the 25th game;
— If Kershaw pitches in seven games in 2024, the potential earnings for 2025 could reach $15 million, with a $1 million bonus per game from the eleventh to the 25th;
— With eight games pitched in 2024, Kershaw could make up to $12 million in 2025, gaining $1 million for each from the fourteenth to the 25th appearance;
— Should he appear in nine games during 2024, the bonuses for 2025 could also total $12 million: $1 million for each outing from the seventeenth to the 25th;
— If he reaches ten appearances in 2024, he stands to earn up to $5 million more in 2025, pocketing $1 million for each game from the twenty-first to the 25th.
Kershaw’s total potential earnings for the 2025 season are capped at $25 million, as per the contract terms.
A highly celebrated pitcher with 210 career wins, Kershaw is eyeing a return to the pitcher’s mound in the majors this coming summer. His recent surgery on November 3 addressed issues with the glenohumeral ligaments and the joint capsule in his shoulder. Despite challenges with shoulder soreness that affected his 2024 season, Kershaw still delivered a solid performance with a 13-5 record and a 2.46 ERA across 24 starts.
However, Kershaw’s most recent postseason outing was less than optimal, conceding six runs in the initial game of the NL Division Series, contributing to the Dodgers’ sweep at the hands of Arizona.
Conclusion Clayton Kershaw’s latest agreement with the Los Angeles Dodgers provides a blend of guaranteed salary and performance-based incentives that could significantly bolster his earnings over the next two years. The contract terms are indicative of the team’s faith in his abilities post-surgery as well as a clever structure to motivate the pitcher’s performance on the mound. As he maneuvers his recovery, fans and analysts alike will be watching to see if Kershaw can meet his health and performance conditions to fully capitalize on the lucrative potential of his new contract.

Newly Signed Dodgers Starter Revealed Reason For 2023 Second Half Struggles
Story by Maren Angus-Coombs •
8h
James Paxton's first half of 2023 was remarkable for a pitcher who had Tommy John surgery in 2021 and missed all of 2022.
Through his first 10 starts with Boston last year, he was 5-1 with a 2.73 ERA.
However, the All-Star Break came, and Paxton's stamina wasn't there for the second half. In nine starts after the break, Paxton was 2-4 with an ERA of 6.98.
“The second half, I started to get pretty tired,” he said. “It had been 2.5 years since I pitched, and the innings kind of built up there. I was going pretty deep into ballgames there for quite awhile and I just ran out of gas there at end. Then my body started to bark at me a little bit, my knee and stuff like that. So I wasn’t able to execute pitches the way that I needed.”
Per James Paxton via O.C. Register
Overall, his first full season back from surgery turned into a tale of two halves. He finished the season 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 19 starts.
Paxton and the Dodgers agreed to a one-year contract last month, and he threw his first bullpen at Camelback Ranch on Saturday.
He believes he is a "full go" for the start of the season, and so does the front office.

Read an article yesterday about the Dodgers should flip some more of their young prospects for Dylan Cease. Sure. It wasn't worth copying & pasting. Just some bored sportswriter daydreaming.

Why do sportswriters keep harping on starting pitchers? Kasten had dealt for more than enough starters this winter already!

Mike Trout doesn’t want trade, pushing for Angels to sign star free agent
Story by Joey Mistretta • 4h
When Shohei Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this past offseason, the entire MLB world wondered what the future held for Mike Trout. Some expected the Los Angeles Angels star to request a trade. Trout, though, spoke to the media Monday and said he doesn’t want to be traded right now. Instead, Trout wants the Angels to sign one of the remaining top free agents, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.
“Mike Trout just said he does not want to be traded now — he called it ‘the easy way out’ — and that he’s been pushing Angels owner Arte Moreno and general manager Perry Minasian to sign one of the remaining big free agents,” Passan reported.
Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger, and Jordan Montgomery are the top free agents remaining. Signing Bellinger could make sense, but the Angels’ need for starting pitching has been well-documented over the years. Snell, the reigning National League Cy Young winner, has been linked to the Halos this offseason. The Angels’ chances of seriously competing still appear to be slim, but adding a Cy Young winner would help without question.
As for Mike Trout, he’s proven to be one of the most loyal superstars in the game. It is respectable, however, Trout has played in just three postseason games during his entire legendary career.
Mike Trout’s legacy Trout is focused on helping the Angels win. He’s spent his entire career in Anaheim and isn’t ready to ask for a trade just yet. Trout did not rule out the possibility of a trade in the future, however.
“You know, there might be a time,” Trout said, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today. “I’ve really haven’t thought about this. But you know, when I signed that contract, I’m loyal.”
The 32-year-old has already established himself as a Hall-of-Famer. He’s an 11-time All-Star and three-time MVP. Injuries have impacted Trout in recent seasons, but he has still found success while on the field.
If Trout never wins a championship, though, his legacy will be negatively affected. It isn’t his fault, as he’s played at an elite level. Trout’s loyalty will be taken into account when discussing his legacy as well.
In the end, though, winning is crucial for superstars. Shohei Ohtani went in a different direction than Trout and he’s likely going to play in the postseason for the first time in 2024 as a result.
Again, Mike Trout left the door open for a potential trade request down the road. For now, he is set to lead the Angels once again.

With all due respect, you're a fool Mike. The Angels could sign both Bellinger & Snell & it's debatable they would be contenders. But even that point is rendered moot because Moreno has no intention of doing it.
This really seems to date back to Arte's battle with the city of Anaheim. When he seemingly checked out.

Just read on Microsoft news that Buehler will very likely NOT pitch in Spring Training and that his recovery from a second Tommy John surgery is not progressing as well as expected.
One has to continue to wonder just who and how team physicians can be this obtuse (Yep - Shawshank, again).
How many times have we seen players back on the field from hamstrings, groin pulls, etc. that had no business being there?
Kershaw being thrown to the wolves last October with a bum shoulder. And wasn’t Buehler thought to be ready to pitch that same month, but was held out for precautionary reasons?
Now it looks like we’re down ANOTHER top of the rotation starter and may be depending on one of the several not ready for prime time pitchers from last year to fill that spot for who knows how long.
Seems to be it’s time Kasten and company took out the trash and hired some REAL physicians and trainers that didn’t get their degrees from Guatemala U.
GO DODGERS!!!

They're going to want to limit Ferris' innings. You make a very good point about their bullshit he's coming back in August or September of 2023 though. We really can't believe anything coming out of this front office about injuries.

Blockbuster Trade: Mike Trout to Dodgers – ‘Almost Too Easy’
Story by News Editorial • 4h
In a shocking revelation, Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout has hinted at the potential for trade rumors swirling around him in the upcoming 2024 season. The slugger, known for his incredible talent and impressive stats, has left fans and analysts speculating about his future with the team.
Trout’s comments have sent shockwaves through the baseball world, as many believed he would remain with the Angels for the entirety of his career. However, the possibility of a trade now looms large, leaving fans wondering where the superstar could potentially end up.
While Trout did not explicitly state that he wants to be traded, his remarks certainly suggest that he is open to the idea. This has sparked a frenzy among teams across the league, who are undoubtedly eager to acquire a player of Trout’s caliber. The Los Angeles Angels, on the other hand, have remained tight-lipped about the situation. It remains to be seen whether they will entertain trade offers or if they will do everything in their power to keep their prized asset.
As the 2024 season approaches, all eyes will be on Trout and the Angels. Will he stay with the team that drafted him, or will he be donning a different uniform in the near future? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the trade rumors surrounding Mike Trout have added an extra layer of excitement to the upcoming season.
MIKE TROUT ADDRESSES TRADE RUMORS: WILL HE LEAVE ANAHEIM?
In a shocking revelation, Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout has spoken out about the persistent trade rumors surrounding him. While Trout expressed his current contentment in Anaheim, he did not rule out the possibility of a trade in the future.
Trout’s comments come at a time when Angels owner Arte Moreno has downplayed the team’s willingness to spend on major free agent acquisitions. With Trout locked into a massive contract until 2030, it’s becoming increasingly likely that his time with the Angels may come to an end.
One potential trade suitor for Trout could be the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Christopher Kline of FanSided. Kline suggests that the Dodgers could offer a compelling package to the Angels in exchange for Trout, allowing him to stay in Anaheim while joining a team primed for success.
The addition of Trout to the Dodgers’ lineup, alongside former teammate Shohei Ohtani, would create a formidable batting order. With Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman already in the mix, the Dodgers would boast one of the most powerful offenses in baseball. It’s a lineup that no pitching staff could confidently claim to have an answer for.
However, injuries could pose a challenge for the Dodgers’ stacked lineup. Ohtani is recovering from an elbow procedure that will keep him off the mound in 2024, while Trout has a history of injury problems. It remains to be seen if both players can stay healthy for an entire season.
Despite these concerns, the Dodgers have a highly-regarded farm system, making them a strong candidate to put together an enticing trade package for Trout. The team has reportedly been willing to part with their top prospects to secure the services of the superstar outfielder.
Only time will tell if Trout will remain with the Angels or if a trade to the Dodgers, or another team, is in his future. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

This could work. The only player on the major league roster I see leaving would probably be Chris Taylor.
Primary players...
C - Smith 1B - Freeman 2B - Betts SS - Lux 3B - Muncy LF - Hernandez CF - Outman RF - Trout DH - Ohtani
Depth -
Rojas Heyward Margot Barnes
It depends on what Moreno thinks he should get. Trout holds all the cards here.

So Twitter is reporting that our girl Maxine is in the best playing shape of his career.
That’s nice and all well and good. But that still doesn’t make him a third baseman.
He will still miss a good deal of balls hit that way and continue to make lousy throws.
But I guess the Dodgers are willing to accept that along with his .200 average as long as he keeps hitting 30 + HR’s and 90 RBI’s.
Between him a Lux at short, it should be a real adventure for the left side of the Dodger infield this year.
Right handed pull hitters should have a field day every at bat.
GO DODGERS!!!

Pitchers are supposed to strike out hitters anyway. Fielders are mere ornaments. This sounds very dated, but remember when pitchers like Maddux & Palmer were the best in the game because they induced ground balls & pop-ups? Infields like the Cubs & Orioles were lauded for their defensive prowess. Even strikeout pitchers like Seaver & Jenkins MIGHT average a K an inning. A K an inning was very impressive. They're in the Hall of Fame. Now we have guys with spin rates & 100 mph fastballs. Yearly trips to IL. Hacks like Muncy who couldn't catch a liner with a fishing net. Well, if the pitcher did his job, Max wouldn't have to field. The hitter would strike out. Max got 30 homers. He struck out 150+ times. But that's not so bad. Dave Kingman went around the league in 80 days for the same thing. Adam Dunn normalized it. GM's with pocket calculators said the statistics prove that if you don't run, don't try to make contact, swing for the fences on 0-2 counts, that the probability of you scoring...

Blockbuster Trade Pitch Brings Mike Trout to Dodgers: ‘Almost Too Easy’
Story by Peter Chawaga • 1d
Speaking out about consistent trade rumors as the Los Angeles Angels repeatedly disappoint on the field, Mike Trout shut down the idea that he’d ask for a trade while acknowledging that one is always possible.
“On the trade front — he said he’s happy being in Anaheim right now,” The Athletic’s Sam Blum reported. “But left open the possibility that he’d be open to (a) trade down the line.”
With Angels owner Arte Moreno recently downplaying the notion that he’d spend money on major free agent acquisitions this offseason unless they would “substantially change the team,” and Trout due to earn an average of $35.6 million every year until 2030, it’s not difficult to imagine that his time with the Angels may soon end.
Projecting the most likely trade suitors for Trout for FanSided, Christopher Kline predicted the Los Angeles Dodgers could “furnish the Angels with a suitable compensatory package” in exchange for Trout.
“It’s almost too easy,” Kline wrote of the potential trade. “He wouldn’t have to leave Anaheim. It’s a simple commute, across town, on a team destined to win a ton of games. It’s past time for Trout to win in the playoffs, which is presumably his primary goal in the event of a trade. The Dodgers assure him the best opportunity to do so.”
Adding Mike Trout Could Give the Los Angeles Dodgers an Unparalleled Batting Order After signing Trout’s former teammate Shohei Ohtani to a record-setting, $700 million deal this offseason, the Dodgers are set to have one of the most formidable batting orders in MLB. Ohtani will likely bat second, sandwiched by star sluggers Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.
Arriving with the Dodgers, Trout might join Ohtani somewhere in the middle of that sandwich. To kick off the 2023 season, Trout batted second and Ohtani third for the Angels, though the two switched off between those spots when they were both healthy.
Either way, four of the best hitters in baseball would be at the top of the order for the Dodgers, with a fearsome group rounding out the remaining spots as well.
“The Dodgers would match the Braves and Phillies for power, and then some,” Kline noted. “I’m not sure any pitching staff can credibly claim to have the solution for Los Angeles’ offense at that point.”
Perhaps the only solution would be hoping the offense succumbs to its frequent injury history. Ohtani is coming off of an elbow procedure that will keep him off the mound in 2024. Trout’s formidable career has been riddled with injury problems, and it’s hard to imagine him lasting an entire season in full health.
The Los Angeles Dodgers Can Part With Prospect Depth to Add Mike Trout Even after a blockbuster offseason, the Dodgers have one of the most highly-ranked farm systems in MLB.
As a result, they can compile an attractive package for any trade candidate, including Trout. Earlier in the offseason, Héctor Gómez of Spanish-language outlet Periódica Hoy reported that the Dodgers were “willing to give up their best prospects in exchange for landing Trout.”
As of the 2023 rankings, that would include Dalton Rushing, a plus-power catcher and first baseman; Diego Cartaya, another plus-power catcher; Nick Frasso, a right-handed pitcher with an explosive fastball; Gavin Stone, a right-handed pitcher with a plus changeup; and Jackson Ferris, a left-handed pitcher with a three-plus-pitch arsenal.
