Sonny Gray signs with Cardinals for three-year, $75 million deal in MLB free agency The veteran right-hander is coming off two strong seasons with the Twins By Mike Axisa & R.J. Anderson 9 hrs ago • 1 min read The St. Louis Cardinals are once again in the process of dipping into the free agent market to improve their rotation. The Cardinals and American League Cy Young runner-up Sonny Gray have finalized a three-year agreement worth $75 million on Monday, the team announced. The deal also includes a club option for 2027. Gray, 34, is coming off two terrific seasons with the Minnesota Twins. He pitched to a 2.90 ERA with excellent underlying numbers in 303 2/3 innings the last two years. In 2023, Gray threw 184 innings with a 2.79 ERA and an MLB-leading 2.83 FIP. That earned Gray his third career All-Star Game selection and the runner-up spot behind Gerrit Cole in the Cy Young voting. CBS Sports ranked Gray the No. 12 free agent available this offseason. Here's our write-up: While other second- and third-tier free agent starters had tumultuous seasons, Gray quietly pieced together another high-quality effort. (He also, no doubt, inspired a panicked phone call from his agent after he suggested he might retire this winter.) Gray doesn't throw hard and he'll turn 34 this offseason, but since 2019 he's posted a better ERA+ than Luis Castillo, Zac Gallen, Zack Wheeler, and many others who are held in higher public regard. Be that as it may be, we suspect that Gray could be in line to receive a deal similar to the three-year, $63-million pact that Chris Bassitt inked last offseason. Gray rejected the qualifying offer earlier this offseason. Thanks to the size of his Cardinals contract, the Twins will receive a compensation draft pick after the first round. They would have received a pick before the third round had Gray signed a contract worth less than $50 million. The Cardinals have previously signed Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn to bolster their rotation this offseason. Last season, St. Louis' starters ranked 26th in MLB in ERA. www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gibsoky01.shtmlProjected to have a 4.79 ERA & 1.35 WHIP. www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lynnla01.shtml4.83 & 1.32. www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grayso01.shtml3.46 & 1.21.

Gray is projected to be about 3.5. The length is about right. Three years. He's 34. But his career has been injury plagued & 25 million seems a tad excessive. He finished second in Cy Young balloting this past season. I wouldn't give him 25 mil a year.

That’s a bit better than those projected for Lynn and Gibson, for sure. But I’m with you - $25 mil for Gray, given his history and IL stints seems a bit high.
But at this point he’s probably going to be their #1 or #2 and we’ve already seen what those guys are going for (Scherzer, Verlander, etc.).
At $25, Gray might just be a bargain if he can stay healthy and off the IL.
GO DODGERS!!!

Since there's been no talk about acquiring 1 or 2 lefty starters, I wonder if there's new thinking about that, whether or not it makes a difference. With both Kersh and dumbass Urias gone, that leaves us with none, and both Ronan Kopp and Maddox Bruns not being MLB ready till '25, maybe there won't be a lefty in the rotation. We'll see in the winter meetings.

Dodgers Rumors: Insider Reveals Huge Update on Dylan Cease Trade Timeline
Story by Matt Levine •
14h
One of the hottest names on the trade market this winter is Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Dylan Cease. Chicago has been said to be open for business this offseason, and they are potentially looking at a firesale of their roster.
MLB insider Jon Morosi is reporting that trade talks for Cease have intensified recently. We could see a trade come together very quickly, as the winter meetings are set to begin shortly.
Among the suitors is the Dodgers, as MLB insider Ken Rosenthal has reported recently that they are among the most aggressive teams going after Cease. LA has a real need for starting pitching, and Cease should be a home run get for the team.
“More than a dozen teams have inquired on Cease, with the Dodgers among the most aggressive, as USA Today’s Bob Nightengale and others have reported.”
Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic
Last season with the White Sox, Cease posted an ERA of 4.58 and a WHIP of 1.42. He also added in 214 strikeouts over 177 innings of work.
Landing Cease could benefit the Dodgers since he has two years of control left on his deal before he hits free agency. He is estimated to earn $8.8 million per MLBTradeRumors arbitration projections.
LA would love the flexibility of having someone like Cease headlining their rotation while making as little as he does. He would be a steal for the team and would satisfy their need for a top-of-the-rotation pitcher.
The Dodgers were embarrassed in the last few seasons in the playoffs and they know that they need to make a splash. The front office is expected to be aggressive this offseason, and landing Cease would be the start of that.

www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/ceasedy01.shtml"Headlining" might be a bit of hyperbole. It would depend on whether the Dodgers got 2022 Cease, or 2023 Cease. Even in the best of times, control seems to be an issue. This past season he had 79 walks in 177.9 innings. He led the league with 14 wild pitches. He had a 4.48 ERA & 1.42 WHIP. But the important things here are 214 K's & a 3.72 FIP. FIP is imaginary ERA. In 2022 it was a 2.20 ERA & 1.10 WHIP. 227 K's in 184.0 innings. A league leading 78 walks. He'll be 28 years old. Last year he averaged 5.1 innings a start. His good season, in 2022, he averaged 5.2 innings per start. The year before that it was 5.0 innings a start. He's made 32, 32 & 33 starts the last three seasons. Registered 226, 227 & 214 K's. He's a hard throwing righty, whose fastball averages 95-96 mph. He would be a good get. Working in Dodgers Stadium would probably help his ERA. But how much are you willing to give up for a 5 inning pitcher?

And another righthander to boot. Ferris is also very likely going to be eased back into the rotation and on a pitch count limit that may only allow him four or five innings per game. I don’t care how many arms they get in the pen - it’s been proven time and again they cannot be expected to pitch EVERY FREAKIN’ DAY!! So unless LA is planning on “piggybacking” these guys in the rotation, this looks like another weak ass move by Froggy. Imagine having ten starters who can only throw four or five innings every fifth day? And making $20 mil a year or more? Guys like Gibson, Koufax, Ryan, etc. who went out and threw eight or nine every FOURTH day 35 - 40 times a year must be laughing their asses off at how weak and lame the game they once dominated has become. GO DODGERS!!!

Dodgers Free Agency Rumors: Seth Lugo Interest
Story by Matt Borelli, Dodger Blue •
1d
While the Los Angeles Dodgers figure to add at least one elite starting pitcher this offseason, they are also looking to bolster their overall rotation depth.
The Dodgers have been linked to the likes of Corbin Burnes, Dylan Cease, Blake Snell and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who would all slot in at the top of the rotation.
The team has additionally shown interest in several pitchers who would fill out the backend. Among them is Lucas Giolito, who could be a bounce-back candidate after struggling with three teams this past season.
According to Ari Alexander of KPRC2 Houston, the Dodgers may look to sign Seth Lugo as well:
The Dodgers were among the finalists to sign Lugo last winter before he joined the San Diego Padres on a two-year contract that included an opt-out clause after the 2023 season.
Lugo went 8-7 with a 3.57 ERA, 3.83 FIP and 1.20 WHIP in a career-high 146.1 innings pitched across 26 starts this year.
The 34-year-old spent the first seven seasons of his career with the New York Mets, where he was primarily a reliever but also proved capable of making starts.
If the Dodgers were to sign Lugo, he would presumably remain in a starting role for the 2024 season. However, his ability to pitch out of the bullpen is a plus and adds to his appeal.
Seth Lugo accused Dodgers of stealing signs The Dodgers’ reported interest in Lugo comes less than four months after the right-hander accused the team of stealing signs following a rough start at Petco Park.
Manager Dave Roberts, Freddie Freeman, David Peralta and Jason Heyward were among those who denied any wrongdoing.

I had briefly forgotten about Lugo.
The clubhouse would get quiet when Seth enters.
'Okay. Third base coach claps once for a fastball. Twice for a curve. Three times...'
(Seth comes in...).
'Hey! Anyone else see the Lakers game last night?'

Of all the other pitchers mentioned like Cease, Burns and others have at least good stats, but Lugo's stats are pretty average. On top of that, he's a crybaby how he accused Robby of stealing signs and relaying them to the hitters. He simply got clobbered by Mookie's grand slam after dominating the Dodgers the first 4 innings I think it was. I think this is all made up anyhow, as the press loves to do

Smelly and the Dodgers close to inking a new deal. It’s like deja vu all over again. Might as well go back after Fruit Salad (Almonte) and Mary (Pickford).
Also saw on the X that they are talking to Jacques. Another part time .200 hitter. WHEEE!!!
The more retreads, the better seems to be the new company motto.
