MLB News: League Proposes 154-Game Season With Delayed Start Date to the Union It appears as though we are going to get a shorter season in 2021. by Brook Smith 01/31/2021, 10:58 AM Up until now, it did not seem that MLB and the Player’s Union were at a place where fans could feel confident about the 2021 season. The two sides had reportedly disagreed about the concept of expanded playoffs and shortening the season just a week ago. The good news is, that appears to have changed. Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reported today that MLB has sent another proposal for the season over to the Union. That proposal suggests pushing the start date back a full month and extending the season one more week. Under that format, the league would only play 154 games rather than the normal 162. An expanded postseason is a part of that proposal, per the report. Under normal circumstances, the Union would probably decline MLB’s request right from the start. But it seems to be a little different this time, as the league is offering full pay as a part of the deal. The full payment has been a major sticking point for the Union as they try to get everything they can for the players after a shortened 2020 season. Pushing back the start date would allow MLB to start things up under presumably safer conditions. Spring Training officials already requested that the league push back the report date as Arizona and Florida both struggle with COVID-19 numbers. A large influx of players, media, and MLB workers in February certainly wouldn’t help that cause. Pushing back a month would mean that more people — namely players — have time to get vaccinated, and the hope is that the numbers would go down. It is not yet known if the Universal DH was included in the league’s proposal, but they were reported to be in on it should the players accept the extended playoffs. This could be the best-case scenario for all. UPDATE MLB Network’s Jon Heyman added that the DH is included in the proposal. Pitchers and catchers are currently set to report to spring training in about two weeks, so there should be some urgency to these talks. I hate that extended playoff format! It's possible that a team with a losing record could win it all if they win at just the right time and that would be a disgrace. And I've said this before that as much as I hate the DH, it's time the NL adopted it. It's pretty awkward for the NL to adjust to it in the WS and the AL to adjust to not having it. A 154 game season is certainly better than last year's 60 game season so hurray for that! But not a word in the article about whether or not tickets would be available for fans, or do we look at those stupid dummies in the seats that are supposed to look like fans? I live less than half an hour from the D-Backs park and I'd love to attend games there.

Guess the owners are going to try to slip it in again. I also am not a fan of it or expanded playoffs. We’re not the NBA / NHL and this is not kids playing where everybody gets a trophy or ribbon. I much preferred the original winner of each division ONLY back when there were only four divisions (two in each league - east -vs- west). I understood the need for the wild card when MLB went to three divisions, but am not a fan of the second wild card or adding beyond that. What they need to do is go ahead and add a couple of teams, with four in each division. Realign and have worst record team play best record team, with the other two divisions playing each other. Make all series a best of seven if they have to. But I doubt that ever happens because the more playoff games they can schedule, the more money the owners make. Simple as that. GO DODGERS!!!

I've been saying that for several years now and I think those teams could be in Nashville and Salt Lake City, and maybe even Hawaii. There'd be plenty of fans there with all the tourism. Also, Las Vegas is a possibility for the same reason, but for the longest time they had no teams, but for the Raiders. I'm not a fan of the best team playing the worst in the first round of the playoffs, so it could alternate year to year. And no more home field advantage nonsense. If a team is #1 let them prove it by winning on any field. I know all this has been on the drawing board for several years now. The NL West division could be Dodgers, Padres, Giants and DBacks. and the AL West could be Angels, A's, Mariners and the Salt Lake/Hawaii team.

Hawaii would be a tough sell because who else is out there? You would have teams flying thousands of miles into the middle of the Pacific Ocean & they'd play the Hulas & go back to the West Coast. Remember that Walter O'Malley had to convince Horace Stoneham of the Giants to relocate to San Francisco to sell MLB on the feasibility of the Dodgers being in Los Angeles. Teams from St. Louis & Chicago would fly to LA just to play the Dodgers. Which is why piss ant teams like the Diamondbacks should keep their fool mouths shut about Dodger fans in their midst. If it wasn't for us they wouldn't have a team to lose to the Dodgers & be bitter about. San Antonio might be a good spot for another team.

2,350 miles Hawaii → San Francisco, CA 2,491 miles Hawaii → Los Angeles, CA 2,532 miles San Diego, CA → Hawaii 2,590 miles Hawaii → Portland, OR 2,684 miles Hawaii → Seattle, WA www.bing.com/maps?q=map+of+texas+with+cities&form=ANNTH1&refig=d41143c475004b2cb8985ee85070a17d&sp=2&ghc=1&qs=LS&pq=map+of+texas&sk=LS1&sc=8-12&cvid=d41143c475004b2cb8985ee85070a17dThere could be natural rivalries in Texas. This is assuming Texans deign to stay in the union. Baseball has talked about teams in Mexico. Don't know how that would work out financially. But San Antonio is one step closer. If they wanted to put a team in Mexico City then Monterrey would be a necessary stepping stone.

So what's the consensus on any significant moves being made before Spring Training starts (other than resigning Turner)? Been pretty quiet this offseason for the Dodgers except a couple fringe bullpen arms and losing a good amount of our depth to Free Agency. You guys think our team is set as is for the 2021 season, or is there any other moves still in the works? I don't hear much as far as Dodger news these days. All the news is mostly focused around what the Mets, Padres and St. Louis have been up too. Gonna have our hands full with those teams this year with what they've added, along with the Braves as usual. Just glad February is here and hopefully baseball will get going sooner than later...

Imagine if east coast / New England teams had to make that trip every year? Not to mention all the trips HI would have to make HERE to the mainland. I know I’m not a kid anymore, but the first time we went I was in my 30’s & it took me nearly a month to get over the jet lag and back into our time zone. Those guys would be like a bunch of zombies within the first month of the season. Hawaii is beautiful but not a pro franchise state for any team. GO DODGERS!!!

I don’t see losing Kiké or Jacques as huge losses. Neither was ever going to be a full time starter in LA (and they probably won’t with their new teams, either). Both were decent off the bench and had some big hits at critical times in the postseason but for the most part, I’m pretty meh about their departure. We lost Woodchuck and Joan - no tears shed there! I think we eventually sign Turner and possibly Bauer, but neither for more than a couple / few years. Lots of rooks will get a close look this spring in Glendale and we might see them in LA sooner than later. Our rotation will still be rated in the top two or three of the majors and hopefully Price will not “pay the price” (sorry - couldn’t help myself!) for taking the year off. Back to back WS wins hasn’t happened for quite awhile. We have a very good chance to break that string. GO DODGERS!!!

Signing Korey Knebel was a good one and not "fringe". Same with resigning Blake Treinin. But I do agree that letting Kike and Joc go wasn't good and hopefully they won't come back to bite us. But take heart! Many off-seasons in the past have been like this at this point and then suddenly, there'll be three big deals within five days, for a hyopthetical example. For all we know, we could be in negociations with Trevor Bauer. And as for utility players like Kike, we still have Barnes and Taylor. By the start of ST, our anxieties will be put at ease.
