Rudy Giuliani Says LA Lakers Should Hold NBA Championship Parade in 'Communist China...Where It Belongs'
Matthew Impelli 2 days ago
Rudy Giuliani on Sunday criticized the Los Angeles Lakers and the NBA's relationship with China, saying that the team should hold its championship parade in "Communist China...where it belongs."
Wow the lakers won the nba championship," Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who is now President Donald Trump's lawyer, wrote in a tweet. "How about a big parade in Communist China, Beijing. That's where it belongs."
Wow the lakers won the nba championship? How about a big parade in Communist China, Beijing. Thatâs where it belongs.
— Rudy W. Giuliani (@rudygiuliani) October 12, 2020
On Sunday night, the Lakers defeated the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the NBA finals and were crowned champions.
Giuliani's reference to China mentioned the continuing controversy between the country and the league, which stemmed from comments made by Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey in October 2019.
At the time, Morey posted a tweet expressing his support for the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, after a law was proposed that would allow Chinese authorities to extradite individuals from Hong Kong.
"Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong," Morey wrote in his tweet, which was deleted shortly afterward but fueled a backlash from China. A number of Chinese companies cut their business ties with the NBA, and Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that some Chinese government officials had called for his firing.
In response to Morey's tweet, the NBA said it was "regrettable" that the Rockets GM had "deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China," which brought criticism of the league from a number of politicians and commentators like Giuliani, who said the league was defending the Chinese government and not showing support for pro-democracy voices.
Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley has long been critical of the NBA and its response to Chinese matters. In a letter to Silver in July, Hawley criticized the "league's apparent decision to strictly limit messages players can wear on their jerseys to a few preapproved social justice slogans while censoring support for law enforcement officers or the military and any criticism of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)."
The China Central Television (CCTV) national station stopped airing NBA games in the country after Morey's October 2019 tweet but recently decided to air the most recent series between the Heat and the Lakers, allowing citizens to watch NBA games for the first time in nearly a year.
In a statement published to social media, CCTV said the resumption of NBA broadcasting was a "normal arrangement," according to the South China Morning Post.
"On the Chinese National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival that just passed [both on October 1], the NBA sent holiday blessings to Chinese fans. We have also noticed the good will continuously expressed by the NBA, especially the active efforts in supporting the Chinese people in fighting against the Covid-19 epidemic since the beginning of this year," the statement said, according to the Post.
Newsweek reached out to the Lakers and Giuliani for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.

Lakers' Anthony Davis: Not expected to play Friday Rotowire 2 HRS AGO Davis is likely to sit out Friday's preseason opener against the Clippers, Bill Oram of The Athletic reports.
Coming off the shortest offseason in NBA history, Davis and LeBron James are unlikely to participate in the preseason opener after winning the NBA Finals just two months ago. We shouldn't be surprised if he sits out any or all of the four preseason contests.
Lakers' LeBron James: Unlikely to play Friday Rotowire 2 HRS AGO James (rest) is unlikely to play in Friday's preseason opener against the Clippers, Bill Oram of The Athletic reports.
As expected, James will take it easy during the ramp-up to the regular season and probably won't take the court Friday. We shouldn't be surprised if he sits out all four of the team's preseason games given that this is the shortest offseason in NBA history.

Back again: The 2020-21 Los Angeles Lakers season preview, starring LeBron James' new supporting cast
LeBron and Anthony Davis didn't have much of an offseason, but the reinforcements have arrived By James Herbert 4 hrs ago 6 min read
If the Los Angeles Lakers' 2019-20 season was a reboot, this one is a sequel: Co-stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis reprise their roles, and the rest of the cast is a mix of old and new. This is a case of the talent-rich getting talent-richer, and expectations will be even higher this time around.
The Lakers may have won the offseason, but it's not as if they added Kevin Durant to a 73-win team. A better parallel is the team James played for eight years ago.
James won his first championship in 2012 on a team that shifted shapes throughout the playoffs. By the end of the Miami Heat's title run, they'd shifted Chris Bosh to center, next to James and Shane Battier. That was the first year of Erik Spoelstra's pace-and-space offense, but they didn't perfect it until they tweaked the personnel. Miami went from sixth to first in offensive rating in 2012-13, thanks to the additions of Ray Allen, Chris Andersen and Rashard Lewis. Shortly after Anderson signed, the Heat won 27 straight games.
That 2012-13 season is arguably the best of James' career. That's the year in which he thinks Marc Gasol stole Defensive Player of the Year from him, and he shot a career-high 40.6 percent from 3-point range. He and Dwyane Wade had an internal efficiency competition, and he finished the season averaging 25.5 points on 64 percent true shooting, with an increase in assisted baskets, a decrease in midrange jumpers and better spacing. Everything clicked. The game has never looked easier for him.
Once again, James is entering his third season with his new team, fresh off a championship, armed with reinforcements. With Gasol, Dennis Schroder and Montrezl Harrell in the fold, he should be able to get more assisted baskets and more rest. There is no longer any reason for the offense to collapse when James goes to the bench, and there is no longer any excuse for it to devolve into stagnant iso-ball when he's on the court. The champs would have surely preferred a longer offseason, but this roster is ready for Showtime.
Taking the temperature Lakers believer: The Lakers deserve another trophy for how they ran circles around their competition in free agency. You're not supposed to be able to add an All-Defense-caliber center and the players who finished first and second in Sixth Man of the Year voting when you don't have cap space and you've already traded away most of your future first-round picks. These are the perks of being the Lakers and having LeBron. Unbelievable.
Lakers skeptic: You're right: Marc and Montrezl gave the Lakers discounts, and this is definitely a more talented roster than it was last season. But is it a better one? Neither of those guys was impressive the last time we saw them in the playoffs, and that's the time of year when the Lakers will be judged. Replacing Danny Green on the cheap with Wesley Matthews sounds pretty good, but it'll only really pay off if Schroder can replicate the best season of his career. I am not convinced that is likely.
Lakers believer: If you are seriously down on the Lakers because of how their new centers played in the playoffs in the bubble, then I'd like to introduce you to my friend Recency Bias. You'll find that he's always around when you fire off a terrible take. Anyway, yes, I'm sure this roster is better. The Lakers were 11th in offense last season, 17th in the halfcourt and much worse than that with LeBron on the bench. Overcoming their predictability and iffy spacing would have been a difficult feat to pull off twice in a row.
If they hadn't signed Gasol, then I might share your opinion that these signings were more impressive in terms of value than in terms of how much they actually help the team. But they did sign Gasol, a future Hall of Famer who thinks the game as quickly as anybody and is an absolute gift to Frank Vogel. His passing and shooting will open up so many possibilities in the halfcourt. Don't overthink this.
Lakers skeptic: You know Gasol turns 36 next month, right? I love his game as much as the next guy -- LeBron's wrong, the right man won DPOY in 2013 -- but you must at least acknowledge the possibility that his underwhelming postseason performance is evidence of real decline. I'm not confident his body will hold up after this abbreviated offseason, and I prefer my stretch bigs to shoot 3s with more conviction.
Gasol is more than worth a shot on a minimum contract. I'm just not sure that he's the missing piece for this offense, the way he was for the Toronto Raptors a couple of years ago. LeBron has basically played the same style since he left Miami, and I'll believe that the Lakers are going to run a bunch of stuff through Gasol at the high post when I see it. I worry that he won't have as much fun when he's standing around and watching LeBron orchestrate every possession, and I worry that the team will miss the offensive rebounding and vertical spacing that walked out the door.
Lakers believer: Gasol is not going to throw down alley-oops like Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee did, but he wouldn't have done that 10 years ago, either. If you are focusing on vertical spacing and offensive rebounding instead of this massive infusion of playmaking, then you're probably concern-trolling.
And I reject the notion that Gasol, at any age, would have any sort problem playing with LeBron. They'll get along swimmingly because of their big, beautiful basketball brains.
Lakers skeptic: There was indeed a massive infusion of playmaking, an infusion that might not matter all that much in the postseason. I trust Playoff Rondo more than I trust Schroder, and when the Lakers need to be at their best on both ends, I don't expect Schroder or Harrell to be on the floor. Gasol might not be, either, since playing Davis at 5 is such a game-changer.
Lakers believer: The Lakers have 72 regular-season games to play before their crunch-time lineups matter, and in that time they can play around with all sorts of combinations. These new weapons allow the coaching staff to make this team as versatile offensively as it is defensively, and in this case the strengths of Schroder and Harrell seem much more significant than their weaknesses. The luxury of having Davis, James and Gasol on the team is that it is not particularly difficult to hide a weak defender, even in the playoffs.
Beyond that, I probably don't have to explain why it is a good idea to reduce LeBron's load in his age-36 season after the quickest turnaround of his career.

Eye on: Talen Horton-Tucker In Game 4 of the Lakers' second-round series against the Houston Rockets, a 19-year-old rookie checked into the game, seemingly out of nowhere. He was productive in his seven minutes, earning himself 10 more in the clincher a couple of days later. Los Angeles went away from small ball once it was done with the Rockets, though, and he didn't make another appearance.
Talen Horton-Tucker is 20 now, and he's intriguing precisely because he is the kind of player Vogel could throw out there against the Rockets. He stands 6-foot-4, but his 7-1 wingspan is longer than LeBron's and he's strong enough to defend bigger players. It won't be easy to crack this rotation, but over the course of the season he's bound to get a chance to play. If he can knock down a decent amount of his open looks, then you might see him in the playoffs again.

Lakers' Andre Drummond to make debut Wednesday against Bucks; will start over Marc Gasol
Gasol has started every game he's played in this season By Sam Quinn Mar 30, 2021 at 4:35 pm ET 1 min read
Marc Gasol has started every game for the Los Angeles Lakers this season, and when they've been healthy, that has worked out just fine. The starting unit featuring Gasol, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Dennis Schroder outscored opponents by 13.9 points per 100 possessions before Davis got hurt, but despite that success, it appears as though the Lakers are gearing up for a change.
New Lakers big man Andre Drummond is going to start over Gasol in his debut with the team against the Bucks on Wednesday, Frank Vogel confirmed following Tuesday's practice.
"I think our group felt sort of an uptick in energy from having a guy like that come to our team," Vogel said. "Everything we thought we were going to get in him he showed in practice today. We're excited to have him out there."
Now that Drummond has officially joined the team, the Lakers have a logjam at center that Frank Vogel will have to solve in time for the postseason. In addition to Drummond and Gasol, reigning Sixth Man of the Year Montrezl Harrell has also had a strong season, and Davis will play quite a few minutes at center when the playoffs arrive. Throw in the possibility of Markieff Morris playing center minutes as he did last postseason, and there simply isn't enough playing time to go around.
It will take experimentation for Vogel to figure out how to balance all of that talent. Gasol and Harrell have not played a single minute together so far this season. With Drummond starting, that is likely to change. The silver lining to Davis being injured is that Vogel will have extra minutes to use in tinkering with different lineup combinations.
The Lakers used four different starting lineups during their championship run last postseason. They will likely change things up depending on matchups in the playoffs. The Lakers already lack spacing on offense, and a non-shooter in Drummond will only exacerbate those issues. With only a month and a half left until the playoffs, Vogel won't have much time to solve problems like those, but he'll have to if the Lakers plan to repeat as champions.

www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/drumman01.htmlMarch 28, 2021: Signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers They gave up no one to get him. He's a rebounding demon. Gasol has been a disappointment. I'm guessing Drummond & Harrell don't ever play on the floor at the same time. They can pair Gasol with Harrell on the second unit. He's still a good passer. Wow! Great pick up.

Lakers' Andre Drummond: Explodes for 19 rebounds Rotowire 7 HRS AGO Drummond produced 14 points (5-10 FG, 4-4 FT), 19 rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and a steal across 31 minutes in Thursday's 115-110 loss to the Mavericks.
Drummond recorded his highest rebound total as a Laker in the loss, and with a respectable contribution in every major category, it was arguably his best performance of the year. Perhaps the return of Anthony Davis sparked the fire of competition into Drummond's heart, although it's likely that the two will be spending plenty of time on the court together. They began Thursday's game as the starting frontcourt, and once Davis is fully healthy, they'll team up as one of the league's most dangerous duos in the paint.
Lakers' Dennis Schroder: Puts up double-double in loss Rotowire 7 HRS AGO Schroder recorded 25 points (9-13 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 5-6 FT), 13 assists and two rebounds across 38 minutes in Thursday's 115-110 loss to the Mavericks.
Although he fouled out with 18 seconds remaining in the game, it was a heroic performance from Schroder, who helped bring his team back from the brink with the help of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in the third quarter, only to see their lead evaporate when Schroder took a seat at the end of the stanza. It's just another example of Schroder's impact on the squad, especially with LeBron James (ankle) out of action.
Lakers' Kentavious Caldwell-Pope: Blows up for 29 points in loss Rotowire 7 HRS AGO Caldwell-Pope generated 29 points (9-17 FG, 6-12 3Pt, 5-5 FT), a rebound and a steal across 34 minutes in Thursday's 115-110 loss to the Mavericks.
It's hard to explain what's gotten into Caldwell-Pope over the past two games, but coach Frank Vogel has wisely kept him on the floor during the hot streak. He came out of the gate red-hot with two pretty shots and a steal in the first few minutes and then helped lead an 11-0 run in the third quarter. The longtime Laker can get hot like this when given the opportunity, and the team would love to see his play continue, especially with LeBron James (ankle) out for at least a few more weeks.
Lakers' Anthony Davis: Logs 17 minutes in return Rotowire 8 HRS AGO Davis started and played 17 minutes in a loss to Dallas on Thursday, scoring four points (2-10 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 0-2 FT) and adding four rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot.
Davis showed obvious rust after missing 30 games with a calf injury, but the good news is that he emerged from the contest without experiencing any setbacks. The big man was said to be on a time limit of about 15 minutes entering the game, and coach Frank Vogel held true to that estimate by giving Davis 17 minutes -- all in the first half. Davis isn't likely to have many games going forward in which he makes only 20 percent of his field-goal attempts and misses all of his free throws, so look for much better days ahead as the All-Star gets back into a groove.

The Lakers were up by 17 against the Mavs. They lost by 15. Dallas was using one pick & roll after another. It was embarrassing.
Why didn't Harrell play?

At one point Frank Vogel called a timeout. The announcers mentioned something about how many pick & rolls would you guess Dallas has run tonight. The other sarcastically guessed 60. Out of the timeout the Mavs ran four more pick & rolls. I mean four in a row. Vogel called another timeout. I would not have wanted to be an unpopped bag of popcorn in that huddle.
