Lakers not willing to part with their young core in potential Trevor Ariza deal
By Broderick Turner
Dec 12, 2018 | 5:15 PM
The Lakers won’t surrender Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kyzma or Josh Hart to the Phoenix Suns in their pursuit of forward Trevor Ariza, said people familiar with the situation who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
The Lakers have informed teams that have called about trade proposals that they will not give up any of their young core unless it’s for a superstar player, one person said.
The Suns were turned down when they sought to get one of the Lakers’ young players in exchange for Ariza, and Phoenix also rejected a three-team deal that was discussed with the Lakers.
The Lakers and Suns have continued to pursue trade scenarios that make sense for both teams.
Two people confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that the Lakers and Houston Rockets have been engaged as far back as two weeks ago about a deal for Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. No deal is imminent.
Players like Ariza who signed free-agent deals during the summer are not eligible to be traded until Saturday.
The Lakers very much would like to acquire Ariza, the people said. And people close to Ariza, who signed a one-year deal with the Suns for $15 million, said he would like to return home to Los Angeles and play for the Lakers.
Ariza, 33, played for the Lakers for two seasons, winning an NBA championship with them in 2009. He attended Westchester High and UCLA.
The Lakers view the 6-foot-8 Ariza as a solid fit for their team because of his tremendous defense and three-point shooting. He’s making 35.3% of his three-pointers and averaging 9.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals.

Sounds like the Suns are having buyers' remorse & want the Lakers to bail them out by giving them a good player in return.

Now a rough patch. Help is on the way though.
Lakers' Brandon Ingram: Returns to Lakers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Ingram (ankle) was recalled from the South Bay Lakers on Tuesday, Mike Bresnahan of Spectrum SportsNet reports.
Ingram was sent to the South Bay Lakers on a rehab assignment earlier in the day Tuesday, and after completing one practice with the Lakers' G-League affiliate, he'll rejoin Los Angeles. This puts him right on track to get back on the court Friday against the Pelicans, although expect more news on his availability to emerge closer to tip.

Just finished watching this Lakers' game, oh man! They get beat by 1 point on a 3 point shot as time expires. They played well without LeBron and deserved to win! All I can say is that Brandon Ingram does not fit on this team at all. He will be a very good player someday but may be for a different team. I would trade him as the center piece of a Anthony Davis deal.
Ingram + Hart + Caldwell-Pope + Draft Pick(s) = Anthony Davis
OR
Ingram + Zubac + Caldwell-Pope + Draft Pick(s) = Anthony Davis

LaVar Ball doesn’t want Lakers to get Anthony Davis: ‘They’ve got enough people’ By Dan FeldmanDec 27, 2018, 5:05 PM EST LeBron James said he wants to play with Anthony Davis – “duh.” But someone connected to the Lakers disagrees. Would it be cool if the Lakers got Davis? LaVar Ball, Lonzo Ball‘s father, via TMZ: "No. They’ve got enough people." Obviously, the Lakers won’t base their roster decisions on LaVar’s opinion. But, if anything, this could remind Davis about the potential headaches of playing in Los Angeles. Though he has mostly remained quiet this season, LaVar can still turn an otherwise-peaceful existence into a storyline. And he’s just the start. There are no shortage of sideshows in Los Angeles. That’s a huge change from New Orleans. The Pelicans can trade Davis wherever they want, but teams that believe they can re-sign him will offer more. He can become a free agent in 2020. He’ll ultimately dictate where he plays. It’s on the Lakers to recruit him, which LeBron James seems to be doing. Of course, LaVar’s biggest concern is probably the Lakers trading Lonzo in a package for Davis. LaVar wants his son in Los Angeles. If the Lakers get Davis without surrendering Lonzo, I bet LaVar would change his tune in a hurry. www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/davisan02.htmlwww.basketball-reference.com/players/b/balllo01.htmlBye Lonzo...

LOL that guy's mouth. The way Lonzo is starting to shoot I doubt he is included in a trade. Coincidence he is starting to ball as his pops has kept his trap shut? Technically Davis becomes a free agent after 2020 but that is because he owns a player option for that season which seems like impossibility that he would opt in to stay in New Orleans. I'm sure the Pelicans and the league are thinking that he opts out and becomes a free agent after next season. Get to it Lakers!

Lakers' LeBron James: Will be re-evaluated in one week
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
James (groin) will be re-evaluated in one week, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. James, who has been sidelined with a groin injury since Christmas Day and won't travel with the team on their next road-trip, will continue to be held out for at least one more week, meaning he will miss contests against New York, Minnesota, Dallas and Detroit. It's unfortunate news for the former first-overall draft pick, as the Lakers have been dealt with a number of injury problems already this year. With James inactive until at least the matchup against the Jazz on Jan. 11, the Lakers will presumably continue to keep their starting rotation the same, with Josh Hart filing in at shooting guard, Brandon Ingram transiting to small forward and Kyle Kuzma starting at power forward.

Lakers lost a tough one in overtime yesterday. 138-134 to the Rockets in Houston. Kuzma had 32 points & 8 rebounds in 44 minutes. Ingram had 21 points, 5 rebounds & 4 assists. 6 turnovers though. Lonzo Ball had 8 points & 11 assists in just 22 minutes. Zubac (who has been playing very good recently) had 17 points & 7 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench. He fouled out though. McGee had 12 points & 14 rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Continuing with that theme, Lance Stephenson contributed 16 points (4-8 on threes) in 25 minutes for the Bench Mob.
Harden & Gordon combined for 78 points for the Rockets.

Let's hope this isn't too serious. Lakers' Lonzo Ball: Avoids fracture
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Ball did not suffer a left ankle fracture as his X-rays came back negative Saturday, Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Ball sustained the left ankle injury during the third quarter of Saturday's game against the Rockets and had to be carried to the locker room by teammates. The Lakers are calling the injury a left ankle sprain for the time being, but an MRI is likely on tap in the near future. The Lakers are set to host the Warriors on Monday but Ball seems unlikely to be available with such a short turnaround.

Lakers get blown off the floor by the Timberwolves here in LA. 120-105 total. They were outscored 62-44 in the second half. Outrebounded 55-39 overall. They're now 25-24 / .510. 9.5 games behind the first place Warriors & 1.5 games out of the playoff picture.
Lakers' LeBron James: Officially ruled out Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
James (groin) has been ruled out of Thursday's game against the Timberwolves, Bill Oram of The Athletic reports. While James was a partial participant in practice Wednesday, he's still building back strength in his left groin and will remain out Thursday night. James has not played since Christmas Day, and though he appears to be getting closer, it's still very much unclear when he'll be back on the floor. For now, the team appears to be handling his status on a game-to-game basis. Looking ahead, the Lakers are off Friday and Saturday before home matchup with the Suns on Sunday.

Report: Anthony Davis requests a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans
Ben Rohrbach
Yahoo Sports
Jan 28, 2019 4:30 AM
New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis made a bombshell power play on Monday, requesting a trade and informing the team he will not sign a contract extension, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Considered one of the best five players in the NBA, Davis is eligible to sign a five-year, $240 million extension this summer. By informing the Pelicans he will not re-sign, the 25-year-old five-time All-Star is all but forcing New Orleans general manager Dell Demps to deal him or lose him for nothing when his current contract is up in 2020. The only real question now is how quickly the Pelicans will comply.
“Anthony wants to be traded to a team that allows him the chance to win consistently and compete for a championship,” Davis’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, told ESPN. He added, “Anthony wanted to be honest and clear with his intentions and that’s the reason for informing them of this decision now. That’s in the best interests of both Anthony’s and the organization’s future.”
Davis informed teammates of his intention to request a trade prior to the news, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The Pelicans have lost five of their last six games, falling to 22-28 on the season and 13th in the Western Conference — six games behind the Los Angeles Clippers in eighth.
Davis has missed the last four games after injuring his left index finger against the Portland Trail Blazers on Jan. 18. He is averaging 29.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.6 blocks per game.
The slow build to an Anthony Davis bombshell
The news comes as somewhat of a surprise after Davis for years told the public he prefers to win in New Orleans. The Pelicans enjoyed their best campaign of the Davis era last season, sweeping the Blazers to reach the Western Conference semifinals, but Demps has long struggled to build a consistent winner around the generational talent. The Pelicans have missed the playoffs in four of their six seasons since drafting Davis No. 1 overall in 2012, and they are on pace to miss them again.
“I got to play almost perfect every night to give us a chance to win,” Davis told Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes in November, making it clear to everyone that he knows full well the burden he is carrying.
The tide did begin to change this past summer, when Davis fired his longtime New Orleans-based agent to hire Paul, the orchestrator of all three of LeBron James’ moves across the league. Future Hall of Famer and fellow Chicago product Kevin Garnett, who was the prototype for so skilled a big man, told Davis that his biggest regret was not requesting a trade from the similarly positioned Minnesota Timberwolves earlier in his career and that the All-NBA forward/center needs to go play with LeBron.
LeBron James’ Lakers play for Davis
LeBron himself told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin in December that it would be “amazing” and “incredible” to play with Davis, leading several small-market general managers to file complaints about tampering. Days later, LeBron and Davis dined together after their game in Los Angeles. The NBA soon issued a memo reminding teams of the league’s anti-tampering rules and warning against repeated offenses.
These ties to LeBron make the Los Angeles Lakers an obvious potential landing spot for Davis, especially since they have a trove of young talent that might make for attractive trade bait (namely Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart), but every team in the NBA will be lining up to land a perennial MVP candidate in his prime, including (reportedly) the Golden State Warriors.
Complicating matters is the fact that the Boston Celtics, who may well have the best package of assets to offer, cannot complete a trade for Davis as currently constructed. Like Davis, Celtics star Kyrie Irving is on a Rose Rule rookie contract extension, and no team can acquire two players with that deal in place. That changes in July, when Irving becomes a free agent and the Celtics can offer any number of young stalwarts (Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to name a pair) and a cache of picks for Davis.
The NBA’s trade deadline is two weeks away, on Feb. 7, offering other teams an opportunity to deal for Davis before Boston gets involved. The Pelicans have “expressed no desire” to deal Davis prior to the deadline, according to Wojnarowski. In addition to delaying until the Celtics can up the ante, New Orleans is wise to wait beyond the deadline for the June draft, when the lottery is sorted out and Demps will know exactly where some of the draft picks he can acquire in return will fall. The Pelicans can agree to a trade prior to the onset of free agency on July 1 and complete the deal thereafter.
The Celtics are waiting in the wings

LeBron James injury update: Lakers star goes through full-contact practice, still out against Suns
The Lakers have been without their star since Christmas Day
While drama surrounds the Los Angeles Lakers in the form of injuries, trade rumors, and a potential coaching change, there is a bit of good news out of Los Angeles. LeBron James is moving ever closer to a return to the court for the first time since injuring his groin on Christmas Day against the Golden State Warriors. . On Saturday, LeBron went through full-contact drills for the first time since suffering the injury -- a major milestone in his recovery. While he didn't participate in the team's scrimmage, head coach Luke Walton said he "looked good." Via Lakers.com: In fact, the only bit of relief came from LeBron James, who returned to contact practice, participating fully in the team's defensive drills. James wasn't part of the scrimmage, but it was an important step for L.A.'s superstar as he recovers from a strained groin.
"It was the first time he's been out there in the part of practice that involved that type of movement," coach Luke Walton said. "He looked good. He's still really good at basketball, in case you guys were wondering."
LeBron has missed all 15 of the Lakers' games since Christmas, and the team has understandably struggled without their best player. Currently on a three-game losing streak, they're just 5-10 without "The King," and have fallen out of the playoff picture in the Western Conference.
Still just two games out of eighth place, and four and a half games out of homecourt advantage in the first round, there is plenty of time for the Lakers to turn things around, but they're going to need LeBron back on the court to do so. At the same time, they don't want to rush him back, especially not from a groin strain, which can be pesky if it isn't allowed to heal fully.
And in recent days, LeBron's agent, Rich Paul, has made it clear that his client will be going at his own pace. "We don't give a sh-- what nobody thinks or says," Paul said in a recent interview. "We're going to do what's best for him... We're not on nobody else's timeline."
The Lakers' next game is on Sunday against the Suns (9:30 p.m. ET -- Watch on FuboTV with NBA League Pass extension), and LeBron will not play in that contest -- though the Lakers should be able to win without him.

The Lakers won that game against the Suns without LeBron. Zubac had 24 points, 16 rebounds & 4 blocked shots. He's emerged as a prime trading chip for Davis.
