Clayton holds all of the cards this year IMO. If he has a down year or heaven forbid, has an injury, he won't opt out and still get his annual $30 million. If he has a Kershaw type year he will get what he wants from whoever is willing to pay it. The Dodgers may have some difficult decisions to make this off season either way. Yes, tough choices. I don't think this is as clear cut as some might think...

Just silly right now to say let him walk or sign him at all costs, it’s just not that simple.

This management is too smart to give an almost 31 year old pitcher (as of free agency time) 6 or 7 years.... hope is that Kersh does not opt out.

So his choice would be 3 years for 105 million,
OR maybe 6 years for 180??? 5 for 150??? Making a guess.
Is there a chance no one offers him 5 years?

No matter what he does, it probably will affect what we do in free agency. If he doesn't opt out he's expensive. If he does opt out, he's more expensive or gone. No doubt, it affects everything. If they move on from Kersh then I'm guessing getting Harper is a no brainer. He might actually be less expensive though if he opts out. I wonder, is he getting more than 35 mill a year on average?

I’m very interested to see how the FO handles this, because there is going to be a LOT of pressure on them by fans and the media to re-sign him. I think they offer more then they are comfortable offering; but if he insists on squeezing every last penny out of the FO I think he is gone.

True he will still be expensive if he doesn’t opt out; but even including his salary they have close to 60 million coming off the books. True a lot of that will go to arb raises (most notably Seager), but they would still be able to add a big time FA without raising the payroll much, or at all.

And if if that's the case then it's on Kershaw. What does he want his legacy to be? he has more money than he could ever spend already, more than his kids could spend and their kids too... Is he a Greinke? Or is he a Dodger? hes a really smart guy, he has to know this.

Some of that depends on what happens with Kemp next year (or this) because I believe he is still on the books for 2019 also. That’s including Kershaw and Kemp. Seager and Puig will eat up a good chunk of that, but there should still be enough to add a big time FA without raising the payroll too much.

Seager's not getting a lot based on his most recent medical history. But I'd still be reluctant to signing Kershaw up for too much based on HIS recent medical information. He hasn't lost nearly as much speed as a lot of posters here seem to contend. He HAS missed significant time with his back though.

Ain’t nobody takin’ that on unless he starts totally shredding. He’s been “serviceable” so far; don’t think his poor defense has cost us a game (yet). His hitting has pretty much been what we thought it would be or maybe even a little better. But $21 mil is a LOT of money for an aging outfielder who’s on the downside of an up and down, missed potential career. GO DODGERS!!!

To me, the only 'big time' free agents that I'm interest in are Machado ....
_____
I have thought about that. The only thing that makes sense is machado or Seager go to 3rd, JT to 1B for a couple years and Cody to the OF.

Seager will get a lot (for a first time arb eligible player), he is a two time all star. And as far Kersh goes, I mean sure, I think most of us would be reluctant to sign him to a 6-7 year deal. But these decisions aren’t made in a vacuum. They are going to face a great deal of pressure to re-sign him after what happened this off season. Could you imagine the backlash if the team regresses this year after standing pat and then let’s one of the greatest players in franchise history walk? Maybe they get a pass if they sign Harper or Machado; but that would take even more years and more money. I don’t envy the front office this off season that’s for sure.
