Dodgers News: Former LA Rookie of the Year Sentenced to Prison for Six Years
Story by Jeff Bilbrey • 17h • 1 min read
Former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Raul Mondesi has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison, along with a fine of 30 million pesos (approximately $500,000). The San Cristóbal Collegiate Court handed down the sentence for embezzlement during his time as mayor of San Cristóbal from 2010 to 2016.
Mondesi's sentencing follows an agreement between the prosecutor's office and his defense. He will serve his sentence after completing six years of house arrest, initially imposed in 2017 for corruption and mishandling public funds.
Alongside Mondesi, former officials Bienvenido Araujo Japa, Jesús Antonio Ferreira, and Pedro Cordero were also sentenced for their roles in the embezzlement case.
Mondesi began his MLB career with the Dodgers, earning the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1994. His career highlights include two Gold Glove awards and an All-Star appearance in 1995.
Mondesi also played for the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Angels, and Atlanta Braves, finishing his career with a .372 batting average, 271 home runs, and 860 RBIs.
He retired from baseball in 2005 and transitioned into politics, being elected mayor of his hometown in 2010.

The infatuation some of our fans have for 'homegrown' players is sometimes frightening. Russell Martin started his career like he was going to be something special. Then he went into the tank & later admitted he wasn't sure if he always gave it his all. Nice to know. Thanks, Russ.
James Loney began his career by bitching about being sent back down to the minors. I think he had one homerun in the minors before being recalled. He went on a tear, then was never the same. He was a serviceable player. That's it. His cult was scary.
People always talked about Mondesi's grit & determination on the field. What I saw was a guy seemingly regressing. We all heard the stories of his showing up just before games & blowing out of the clubhouse immediately afterwards. He had an explosion against the Dodger front office. Was it Kevin Malone? The Dodgers weren't performing to expectations. Karros was probably saying it's just May, June, July, whatever. But Raul said he was sure he would get the blame. He always gets the blame. What the fuck? How the Dodgers managed to get Shawn Green for Raul remains a mystery & one of the biggest heists in baseball history.
I was like - WHAT? Green had 35 homers last year. About 20 SB's. He plays Gold Glove defense. Thanks?
Then Raul went around the league in 80 days & was gone.
We went through it again with Puig.
Good luck, Raul. Invest in soap on a rope.
