Dodgers' Jason Heyward: Dealing with back tightness Rotowire 1 HR AGO Heyward was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Angels due to lower-back tightness.
With two days remaining before Opening Day, it's unclear what impact Heyward's back will have on his availability for Thursday, but the Dodgers should provide more details in the near future. Teoscar Hernandez will shift from left to right field in Heyward's absence, and Chris Taylor will fill the void in left.

Will Smith extension: Dodgers agree to 10-year, $140 million deal with All-Star catcher
Smith was due to hit free agency after the 2025 season
By Dayn Perry 46 mins ago • 1 min read
The Los Angeles Dodgers and catcher Will Smith have agreed to a 10-year contract extension worth $140 million, the team announced Wednesday. Almost $45 million of that will be deferred, according to The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya, and includes a $30 million signing bonus, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
This is the third largest in MLB history ever given to a catcher. Ahead of Smith's pact would be Joe Mauer's $184 million extension with the Twins (2011-18) and Buster Posey's $167 million extension with the Giants (2013-21).
Smith, who turns 29 on Thursday, was slated to reach free agency after the 2025 season, but this contract pushes back that timeline by almost a decade. Smith is a one-time All-Star who has emerged as one of the top-hitting catchers in baseball.
Originally the No. 32 overall pick out of the University of Louisville in 2016, Smith was regarded as a top-100 overall prospect leading up to his MLB debut with the Dodgers in 2019. Since then, he's batted .263/.358/.484 (126 OPS+) across parts of six major-league seasons. Over that span, Smith has averaged 30 home runs per 162 games played. In the recently completed Seoul Series against the Padres, Smith went 5 for 10 to start the 2024 season.
On the defensive front, Statcast for 2023 graded Smith as above-average at blocking pitches in the dirt and in terms of his "pop time" on throws to second base. However, he was below average at pitch-framing.
Notably, CBS Sports recently ranked catchers Dalton Rushing and Thayron Liranzo as the No. 1 and No. 3 prospects, respectively, in the Dodgers' system right now.
The Dodgers this offseason have notably committed more than $1 billion in future salary to free agents like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Of course, the years would be to lower the per annum salary. Still seems like Friedman should get a saliva test.

Dodgers' Freddie Freeman: Set to be No. 3 hitter Rotowire 8 HRS AGO Freeman batted third in the order for both Seoul Series games against the Padres as well as throughout the Cactus League slate, contradicting a comment by manager Dave Roberts early in camp that the first baseman would remain the Dodgers' No. 2 hitter despite the offseason signing of Shohei Ohtani.
Freeman batted second in each of the 161 games he played in last season, but it appears he'll move down a slot with Ohtani now in the fold. The veteran first baseman should get plenty of run-producing opportunities with Mookie Betts and Ohtani hitting ahead of him, and he'll also remain protected with the solid bat of catcher Will Smith behind him for most games. Freeman slashed .282/.333/.667 along with four homers and a team-leading 16 RBI over 42 plate appearances in spring action and went 1-for-6 with four walks in the Seoul Series versus San Diego.

Not bad for a 28 year old that only catches two out of three games a series. Let’s hope last year was an anomaly and we don’t have to see that useless lump Austin Lackof Powers more than once a week or so. And even THAT would be too often for my taste. Surely one of those couple of dudes being mentioned as trade bait now that Smith is locked up could hit .100 in the big show. Hell - at nearly 62, I’m pretty sure I could hit .100. Too bad my knees were shot decades ago! 😝😝😝 GO DODGERS!!!

Which was why I wanted a backup catcher so bad.

Freeman could get 150 RBI's with Betts & Ohtani in front of him.

The game just ended a minute ago with a 7-1 win and Glassman looked great in his 6 innings, only 81 pitches. Teosk did his usual thing, with 3 Ks. At this rate, he'll K 243 times this year, breaking his own record. He did get a double in between though. It was really great seeing Kersh and Dustin in the dugout, both chomping at the bit to get healed and back on the field.
It was sweet, watching this game, and the Monks vs Gnats, Jay vs Rays and Angels vs Orioles on MLB TV all at the same time.
Corbin Burns dominated the Angels, save for Mike Fish's homer in the 1st.

Dodgers' Freddie Freeman: Launches first homer Rotowire 11 HRS AGO Freeman went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and an additional RBI in Thursday's 7-1 win over St. Louis.
Freeman got the scoring started Thursday with an RBI single in the first inning before cranking a two-run homer off Miles Mikolas in the third. The 34-year-old Freeman is coming off a stellar 2023 campaign where he slashed .331/.410/.567 with 29 home runs and 102 RBI. He has a chance to be even more productive this year, batting in the third spot behind Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani in a star-studded Dodgers lineup.
Shohei Ohtani reaches 3 times in home debut as the Dodgers rout the Cardinals 7-1
Stats 13 HRS AGO Dodgers' Ryan Yarbrough: Notches three-inning save Rotowire 13 HRS AGO Yarbrough picked up the save in Thursday's 7-1 win over the Cardinals, allowing just one hit while logging one strikeout over three scoreless innings.
After Tyler Glasnow held St. Louis to one run in the first six innings, Yarbrough held the Redbirds to a lone single over three efficient innings as he earned an unexpected Opening Day save. The 32-year-old left-hander isn't likely to see many save chances going forward in Los Angeles, as he's slated for a long-relief role. Yarbrough went 8-7 with a 4.52 ERA and 67:14 K:BB across 89.2 innings last season between the Dodgers and Rays.
Dodgers' Tyler Glasnow: Grabs first Dodgers win Rotowire 13 HRS AGO Glasnow (1-0) earned the win Thursday against St. Louis. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk over six innings while striking out five.
Paul Goldschmidt's solo home run in the fourth inning was the lone blemish on Glasnow's line Thursday and was one of just two hits allowed by the right-hander. Glasnow needed just 81 pitches to make it through six innings as he picked up his first win with the Dodgers after taking a no-decision in LA's opener in South Korea. The 30-year-old has allowed just two runs through 11 innings this season after going 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 21 starts with Tampa Bay last year.
Dodgers' Blake Treinen: Facing extended absence Rotowire 18 HRS AGO Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Thursday that Treinen (lung) is "a ways away" from returning, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
Treinen suffered a bruised lung when he was struck in the chest by a comebacker in early March. He does not appear to have resumed a throwing program yet, and it would appear his absence could be a long one.
Dodgers' Brusdar Graterol: Not close to returning Rotowire 18 HRS AGO Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Thursday that Graterol (shoulder) is "a ways away" from a return, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
Graterol landed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation prior to the team's series against the Padres in South Korea. It would appear his absence could be an extended one, although Roberts didn't offer up much specificity.

Those dudes just can’t seem to get / stay healthy and when they do, they get nailed by a liner or find some other way to damage themselves. We’re going to need both of them when push comes to shove, especially with Daisy’s pitch count / five innings or no soup for you starter regiment. GO DODGERS!!!
