First (and ONLY) league to show they have a pair and are not afraid of offending the less than 1% alphabet crew.
Last year, the NHL discontinued wearing “special” warm-up jerseys on their respective Pride Nights following the objections of numerous players and teams.
The NHL explained they felt these events “took away” from the product they were presenting and that while players and teams were still encouraged to participate in any causes they wished to devote their time and money to, the league would not be kowtowing to special interest groups and / or their initiatives.
To take matters further, the league also announced the discontinuation of Cancer Awareness practice jerseys to justify their reasoning for the ban on ALL special interests.
While I would agree this allows the NHL to get “blanket coverage” so as not to offend or step on anyones toes, I don’t think the two groups above are in any way comparable.
As someone who had cancer, I can’t imagine who or what outside interest would find it objectionable to make awareness to the disease a priority and something most, if not ALL of the players and teams would support.
But having a special night and jerseys devoted to a lifestyle that accounts for less than one percent of the population, many of who find objectionable and an abomination to their religious beliefs - well, I applaud them for that.
It’s not that I’m homophobic. I’m amazed being a man that any other man would find me or my junk attractive enough to prefer it over a female partner.
But if that IS their preference, so be it. I simply despise the idea of it being jammed down my throat (no pun intended!) with television shows and commercials, movies, sports and other media.
And devoting a “special” night to these groups, many of which perform leud and highly objectionable acts in the general public, like the Dodgers not only allowed, but ENCOURAGED that Sisters group to do earlier this year - well, that’s something I cannot get on board with and I lost a LOT of respect for the team owners and management that caved to public pressure after first denying their application for “entertainment” that night.
This post is directly related to the announcement today by the NHL that it will NOT allow even the usage of rainbow Pride tape on players or their hockey sticks.
It’s a shame this is the ONLY league to stand up to this special interest group and say “not in OUR arenas”.
GO DODGERS!!!
