The Los Angeles Angels got a look at what playing without superstar Shohei Ohtani might be like on Monday, and they enter the second game of their three-game set against the American League-best Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday wondering what the next few days will bring.
Ohtani felt pain after an awkward swing during batting practice on the field before the Monday contest. The Angels announced that he was experiencing right oblique tightness, and they listed him as day-to-day.
"I don't want to speculate anything right now," Los Angeles manager Phil Nevin said after the Angels lost 6-3 to the Orioles on Monday. "He's gonna get checked in the morning, run some tests in the morning. We'll see how it goes. He's pretty sore today."
The Angels' two-way star will be a free agent after this season and most baseball pundits expect him to command a record salary, despite the fact that Ohtani stopped pitching for the season two weeks ago due to a tear of his right ulnar collateral ligament.
Ohtani had only missed two games previously this season, however, so his absence from the lineup may be a short one.
Even when Ohtani was playing, the Angels (64-74) were struggling of late. They have lost four in a row and 23 of 31 since the start of August, and they are facing a Baltimore team with the best record in the AL (86-51).

Shohei Ohtani body double used in Angels' team photo after two-way star misses shoot with oblique injury
An unnamed Angels front office member who's 'very tall' took Ohtani's place in the photo By Chris Bengel Sep 6, 2023 at 11:11 am ET • 1 min read
The Los Angeles Angels took their team photo on Tuesday, but the team's biggest star was nowhere to be seen. Angels starting pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani is currently dealing with oblique soreness, so he wasn't available when the team photo was being taken.
With Ohtani not on the field for that photo, the team used a body double in his place. According to Bally Sports West, the Angels used someone that was "very tall in the front office, name not to be discussed."
Angels reporter Sarah Valenzuela shared photos of the body double on social media, and stated that the man was just slated to occupy Ohtani's spot in the photo. The team plans to photoshop Ohtani into the team photo once it is released.
"Shohei will be in the photo when you see it," Angels manager Phil Nevin said when asked about Ohtani's absence.
Ohtani is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent following the 2023 season, but is currently dealing with a torn UCL in his elbow. That injury has ended Ohtani's season on the mound, and he'll be having a procedure performed on his elbow following the season.
Ohtani compiled a 10-5 record on the mound to go along with a 3.14 ERA this season, while hitting .304 and slugging 44 home runs at the plate.

Am I reading too much into that, or it looks bad?

Angels' Shohei Ohtani: Shut down for season Rotowire SEP 16, 2023 Ohtani (elbow) was placed on the injured list with a right oblique strain Saturday, ending his season, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.
The injury ends not only Ohtani's season but likely his Angels career, with the team's continued failure to mount a serious playoff push during his six years in Anaheim widely expected to lead to his departure in free agency. He'll finish the season with a .304/.412/.654 slash line, representing career highs in all three components, as well as 44 homers and 20 steals. He also won 10 games and finished with a 3.14 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 167 strikeouts over 132 innings before being shut down from pitching in late August with a torn UCL in his right elbow. While he'll undoubtedly inspire quite the bidding war this winter, Ohtani will come with plenty of risk between the oblique issue and the elbow surgery he's likely to require during the offseason. Ohtani is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery, an internal bracing surgery or some other elbow procedure that will likely keep him from pitching for most, if not all, of the 2024 season.
