I don’t know how things work in CA or other states where posters are from, but the taxes in Ohio are completely out of control.
We have a sales tax of nearly eight percent for nearly EVERYTHING we buy with the exception of foods from the grocery.
Top that with annual income tax, state and local wage taxes, vehicle licensing taxes and of course, our BIGGEST nut, property taxes.
Our license plates for the last three years have included a $5 per plate “surcharge” for the removal and replacement of a viaduct / bridge over I-75 on the west side of town.
EVERY plate in Hamilton County is “contributing” to this project and with three vehicles, it’s cost me $45 thus far.
The sad thing is, if I’ve used that viaduct three times in the last three YEARS that would be an over estimate! And they haven’t done shit to it during this entire “collection” period.
The property taxes are the worst, tho. We live in a fairly nice suburb called Colerain Township. Our house is a modest two story four bedroom that we paid just over $130 large for 27 years ago. It is fully paid off and is now worth three times that purchase price.
Our taxes for this “mansion” are over $4,200 annually! Now I’m all for supporting the schools and infrastructure these taxes are allocated to.
But we are in the top five for the ENTIRE state of Ohio for the Northwest School Diatrict, which the bulk of these taxes go towards.
And this district has the balls to continue to put levies up for MORE nearly every year. They have and own multiple plots of vacant acreage that is worth millions, yet they refuse to even consider selling it.
Housing in the area and district continues to expand, with over 1,000 new homes, all in the $250 - $300k range going up everywhere.
And it still isn’t enough. What truly pisses me off is there are also a good deal of apartments in the area and while those property owners have to pay these taxes, their tenants are exempt.
And most of these complexes consist of low income families who, of course, want the best schooling and education for their kids, so their YES votes in these levies usually result in their passage.
There’s a new complex being built not far from our subdivision and it looks to be massive with multiple buildings and probably a thousand plus units.
We can only hope we are “out of here” by the time it is completed and filled because we know damn well those new residents will be YES votes the next time a levy gets on the ballot and next year’s property taxes will likely break five large.
STOP THE MADNESS!!!
GO DODGERS!!!
