I guess this U.S. Open will be her last tournament. I used to root for her because she seemed like the forgotten child. Venus, Venus, Venus. Then she broke through & became the dominant sister. I remember Lindsay Davenport chasing her from pillar to post. Lindsay was a beast in her prime. Maybe the only woman on tour who could make Serena look weak. But Davenport had injuries from carrying so much weight. I remember being disappointed in Serena for her behavior while losing to that Japanese player. I recall being proud of her for defying her father & marrying outside her race. Same as Venus.
We'll miss you, Serena. You're an all time great. Good luck in all future endeavors.

I think Serena’s size has finally caught up with her as well. Nobody is going to stand back and try to play baseline with her because she can still smack the hell out of the ball. But this new young crop of players have learned she cannot run and get to drop shots or short lobs that require her constant movement. She was always a fairly large woman - her thighs were / are bigger than mine. But since having a baby, I think a lot of that muscle has turned to fat and it’s taken away a good deal of her game. Her boobs & ass alone have to tally @ 100 lbs. She’s also 40 years old going against women half her age. I saw her here in Cincy a week or so back and she did not look good, going out in the first round against someone I’d never even heard of. She was one of the best and I don’t think I’d have wanted to play her in her prime - and I used to be pretty good myself. Best of luck in retirement, Serena! GO DODGERS!!!

I kinda hope they start going back to smaller women. But the racket will dictate the style of play. No wooden rackets. They launch missiles with graphite rackets. So we get big women.

They could also make women play best of five in Grand Slam events. That's long been a pet peeve of mine.

I kinda hope they start going back to smaller women. But the racket will dictate the style of play. No wooden rackets. They launch missiles with graphite rackets. So we get big women. I never got used to the larger rackets. I started playing with what was the standard aluminum Wilson T-1000. My uncle then bought an Arthur Ashe Head graphite racket and once I played with it, I had to have one. I think it was around $100, which was a LOT of money for a tennis racket. I used it for years before breaking down and going with a large Prince graphite, but I could never get the same feel or control out of the Prince that I had with the Head. I haven’t played for years, but the last time I did the Prince stayed on the shelf at home. GO DODGERS!!!

She put up the good fight last night, staving off five match points, but in the end you could see she was just completely cooked and spent.
Those last two deuce games were over twenty minutes EACH. I don’t think either of her earlier matches even went two hours. This one was over three.
Yet she was still hitting 100 mph + aces late in the third set as well as smoking returns even on AJ’s first serves.
Is she the best to ever play on the womens circuit? I don’t know if there is an answer for that. But Serena was definitely in the conversation.
Good luck in retirement and future endeavors. The game will miss your boldness and brashness and attitude.
GO DODGERS!!!

Saw on the ESPN ticker last night that Serena is still leaving open a return to the courts, citing the “never say never” on a morning talk show.
She referred to Tom Brady and his retirement / unretirement this year as well as him being older than she is.
Couple of things. Tom is probably going to go down as the GOAT at QB. He’s also ALWAYS kept himself in excellent physical shape. There are also 10 other players on the field that “assist” him in his game.
Serena will probably go down as one of the best, but she certainly has some competition as being the GOAT.
She also plays a probably significantly more demanding sport than football and is on the court, by herself for hours at a time in some matches.
I don’t think she ever really got herself back into playing shape after having a baby and she is said to want another, which undoubtedly will result in additional weight gain which, as we ALL know, becomes harder and harder to lose with age, no matter what you do or don’t eat or how many trainers and nutritionalists you have.
She truly looked exhausted in her final match of the US Open and her goodbye was heartfelt by all of us who have watched her dominate womens tennis for the last couple of decades.
So stay retired, Serena. Enjoy your current and future family while you’re still young enough to do so. Have another baby or two if that’s what you want.
You and they will never have to work another day in your life if you don’t want to.
GO DODGERS!!!

Roger Federer announced his retirement too. Federer & Sampras were my two all time favorites Watched a documentary on McEnroe the other night on Showtime. Pretty good. Got to see him and Lendl play the same night in the early rounds of the Western & Southern Classic up in Mason, Ohio back in the day. Mac was my fav until rock and roll Agassi came along. I had several of his ensembles of shorts with the neon spandex inside and matching shirts and shoes. I wore my mullet much like his and would let my face stubble grow just long enough to match. Think I had at least two of his jean jackets that I wore until they disintegrated. I actually still have two sets of original shorts & shirts along with a pair of never worn shoes I’m pretty sure I could get a decent payoff for if I put them on eBay. I just need to “pull the trigger”, but it’s hard parting with some stuff, even though I know I’ll never wear or fit into it again! GO DODGERS!!!
