Horrifying details emerge from Marcell Ozuna arrest; What are Braves next steps?
Josh Hill 1 day ago
Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna was arrested on Saturday and charged with felony assault. Sandy Springs police allege that Ozuna choked his wife and threw her against a wall, a report that comes from police who said they witnessed the incident.
The Braves released a statement following news of Ozuna's arrest:
"We learned of Marcell Ozuna's arrest earlier this evening and immediately informed the Commissioner's Office. The Braves fully support Major League Baseball's policy on domestic violence which stresses to the fullest that our society cannot and will not tolerate domestic violence in any form. Until the investigation is completed, we will have no further comment."
Initial details of the incident have now been supported by an official report by Sandy Springs Police. The department released its report late Saturday night, detailing the extent of the violence its officers witnessed Ozuna engaging in.
Marcell Ozuna arrest details emerge
Police officers who were reportedly on the scene and walked in on the assault in progress detailed a gruesome and despicable scene:
Ozuna is currently on the IL with two broken fingers, and has been away from the Braves since suffering the injury.
Marcell Ozuna Braves contract situation and Braves' next steps
The Braves and Ozuna agreed to a four-year, $65 million this offseason, a deal that includes an option for the 2025 season. Ozuna is due $12 million this season, $16 million in 2022, and $18 million for the two seasons after that. The 2025 option is for $16 million with a $1 million buyout.
Oznua's arrest changes the terms of the deal, however.
When he was played on the injured list, the Braves were still on the hook to pay Ozuna what he was owed. After his arrest, the team can place him on the league's restricted list and therefore halt all payments otherwise due. According to ESPN's Jess Passan, it's highly likely that Atlanta takes this route as the investigation into the Marcell Ozuna arrest continues.

When the Marlins were holding their yard sale I wanted the Dodgers to get Ozuna. Thank God Friedman doesn't listen to me. Doubtful he knew about this side of Marcell. Just damn glad we didn't get him.

Kind of points out the difference in politics & personalities between Mark Walter & Frank McCourt too. When Milton Bradley was available McCourt had no problem with DePo getting him. The police were called out to Bradley's home on several occasions. Ned Colletti more than bailed us out by trading Milton & getting Andre Ethier in return.
I'm pretty sure someone is going to get a good deal on Ozuna. Whoever that person is, they're going to have to answer a lot of questions by women's rights advocates. Is it worth it? Time will tell. Ozuna is 30 years old & was batting .213 when he went out with his injury. His line last year was .338 / .431 / .636. Those were all by far career highs & came in a strike shortened, walk year.

It’ll all be long forgotten if he produces once he comes back. These guys can and DO get away with murder (Ray ‘cough’ Lewis), assaulting women in elevators while being filmed, shooting up houses, etc. Hell, even our own Eewrias did his time and nobody even mentions it these days. It’s all good as long as they’re keeping their owners bottom line in the black. GO DODGERS!!!

Add to that the people who might forgive are rednecks & Marcell is foreign. It might be a tough road for him to hoe.

Chapman was decent - I wouldn’t have considered him a superstar then or even now; same for Urias, although he certainly has the potential. Both foreigners, no? GO DODGERS!!!

Urias was different. Far as I know, nothing was ever proven. Didn't the person who came on the scene say they were struggling & she fell? Not that Julio was abusive. I was wondering if this was a shakedown. I honestly don't recall the situation with Chapman. They've been hyping him for years though. You said they fixed the speed guns to exaggerate his speeds. Right now he has an 0.45 ERA, 11 saves & 38 strikeouts in just 20.0 innings. That's pretty superstarish.

DODGERS Dodgers’ Julio Urias won’t face charges in domestic battery case
By RICHARD WINTON, JORGE CASTILLO JUNE 3, 2019 5:02 PM PT
Los Angeles city prosecutors will not file misdemeanor charges against Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias related to a domestic violence arrest May 13 at the Beverly Center, the L.A. City Attorney announced Monday.
The city prosecutor instead slated Urias, 22, for a city attorney hearing where he will be told that no action will be taken in connection with the report as long he is not arrested again for violent criminal behavior for the next year — the statute of limitations on the allegation.
According to people with knowledge of the investigation, witnesses told police that Urias shoved the woman he was with, but she told investigators she fell in the parking lot as they argued.
Major League Baseball’s investigation remains ongoing, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
The city attorney in an official statement announced it would “defer prosecution of Mr. Urias on the following conditions “(1) that Mr. Urias participate in a City Attorney hearing; (2) that he commit no acts of violence against anyone; and 3) that he successfully participate in and complete a 52 week domestic violence counseling program in person, and in a group setting.”
“The domestic violence counseling will consist of weekly two hour sessions where, among other things, he must accept responsibility for the abusive behavior perpetrated against the victim, demonstrate an understanding that the use of coercion or violent behavior to maintain dominance is unacceptable in an intimate relationship and he must demonstrate an understanding of and practices positive conflict resolution skills.”
“We are deferring prosecution at this time because: 1) this incident did not result in any physical injury; 2) the victim at no point indicated to either the uniformed police officers or to civilian witnesses that she believed she was a victim; and 3) Mr. Urias has no record of prior criminal conduct.”
Major League Baseball placed Urias on paid administrative the day after his arrest. The commissioner’s office reinstated him seven days later — the maximum stint before the league must request an extension — in coordination with the Major League Baseball Players’ Assn.
The Dodgers were required to place Urias on their active major league roster, as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement, and he rejoined the club in Tampa Bay on May 21. The left-hander pitched for the first time since his arrest four days later against the Pirates in Pittsburgh and logged two scoreless innings in the initial outing. Urias, however, struggled in his first two appearances at Dodger Stadium since the incident, allowing four runs and three homers in three innings.

Chapman went a little loco and started shooting his nine (I believe) while in the attached garage of his home where his wife and kids were still inside. I believe that was a BIG factor in LA passing on him. He had a couple of decent years for the Redlegs and then I believe he was pretty meh for the Cubbies (?) and Vulture-like for the Yanks - save a decent number, but also blow more than expected / acceptable. He has somehow reinvented himself this year and is dominating. Probably a contract / walk year. GO DODGERS!!!

Aroldis Chapman lhp 3 years/$48M (2020-22) 3 years/$48M (2020- 22) signed extension with NY Yankees 11/3/19, prior to deadline for Chapman to exercise right to opt out of his previous contract 20-22: annual salaries of $16M
