Did we already have a book thread?
Got four this month. The first on Albert Anastasia of Murder Incorporated fame. He was the one everyone (but maybe Frank Costello & Lucky Luciano) agreed had to go. The two reputed hitmen were Joey Gallo & Carmine Persico, both of the Colombo crime family. Vito Genovese & Carlo Gambino sanctioned the assassination. Genovese had taken over the Luciano family with an attempt on Costello's life. Gambino took over Anastasia's family with the successful rub-out of Albert. So everyone cooperated. Even outside the Mafia, Meyer Lansky had to be a bit relieved. Anastasia was trying to muscle in on Lansky's gambling empire down in Cuba.
The Mary Trump's book. I'll have to read it before giving a description.
Next up was Bass Reeves. He was a legenday lawman serving Oklahoma. African-American lawman. His career spanned decades. He died in 1910.
Lastly, a book on the Mafia Commission. Most of what I know of it was in Joseph Bonanno's book. Bonanno was so full of shit I just needed verification.
All in all, a good month. Now I need another bookcase. This is ridiculous.

I’m big on non-fiction and celebrity tales, so I have Jerry Seinfeld’s “Is This Anything” as well as the latest by Michael J. Fox sitting at the ready for perusing later this and all of next week while sitting on the Gulf Coast and enjoying a few cold ones.
Some of the rock star books I’ve read have been quite amusing, but by all means, NONE come even close to “I Am Ozzy”, which made me laugh out loud almost hysterically throughout nearly every single page.
Of course, while reading it you have to (and I did!) imagine sitting across the table from him and hearing his voice narrate these tales in the barely audible and recognizable broken English he speaks.

Speaking of Seinfeld, I just literally had a full on episode experience. We rented a car from Hertz nearly a month ago to drive down and back to Florida. Being 6’3”, I need a full sized and comfortable car for over 700 miles each way.
We usually rent from an Enterprise that is near our home, but their prices were ridiculous and over $200 higher than Hertz. We were supposed to get either a Toyota Camry or Chevrolet Malibu, both of which I’ve driven previously and been more than happy with.
I get a voicemail from the agency late Wednesday afternoon asking if I still need the rental and to call them back to confirm. They’re closed by the time I get the message, so my wife gets up and calls them at eight the following morning.
She asks what we will be getting and the clerk gives her the standard “it depends on what we get returned to us in the next 30 minutes”. ARE you f’in kidding me?
Shouldn’t my rental already be sitting there on the lot ready to go when I get there at nine? Isn’t that the reason I made the reservation? I immediately smelled something rotten in Denmark.
We go to pick up our car and I get the old “we don’t have any full sized vehicles available but would be happy to “upgrade” you to a SUBCOMPACT SUV”. Honey - just because you charge more for it doesn’t make it an “upgrade”.
If you’re talking Cadillac Escalade or one of the new Buick’s, then yeah THAT’S an upgrade. My choices were either a Nissan Kicks or Rogue or the smallest Chevrolet SUV. I called bullshit.
First of all, most SUV’s ride like a truck and I know this because we have owned a few.
Secondly, they traditionally get lousy gas mileage and with the supposed “shortage” being right where we were traveling, I didn’t want to have to worry about finding gas multiple times each way.
So it turns out while we’re looking at these SUV’s I see what appears to be a new and freshly cleaned (it still had water dripping from it) Malibu sitting on their lot.
When I pointed it out to the clerk, she advised it was RESERVED. EXCUSE ME?!? Isn’t that what I did a month ago. It was reserved by somebody else who was due to pick it up later that day. HUH?!?
I’m here RIGHT NOW - why can’t I have it and you make your “upgrade” offer to this other customer? No answer or explanation whatsoever - just that it was reserved.
I immediately tore into the “I made the reservation for the vehicle I wanted and so that the vehicle was here for my pickup and that was the WHOLE POINT of making the reservation”.
They TAKE the reservation, they’re just not very good at KEEPING the reservation.
To top it all off, they had another Malibu come in that morning, but it had a window chip that needed to be repaired and could not be released until that work was done.
Okay - I know that even a full windshield replacement takes less than an hour and chips can be repaired in half that.
Why not have this work done (certainly they have a glass repair / replacement service on-call) and then give this Malibu to the other customer? Again, no explanation whatsoever.
After leaving that place totally frustrated and disgusted, my wife called Enterprise and they luckily had a full sized Ford Fusion available. Only problem was it was nearly $250 higher than what we were to pay Hertz. I sucked it up and went ahead with it.
I’m sending the additional bill to Hertz with a scathing email outlining the above. I don’t expect to get a dime out of them but I will do my damnedest to spread the word about how bad they suck to every single person I know, including everyone here!

I've only rented out a car once. They didn't have mine on the lot either, so I got a Bronco.

I've only rented out a car once. They didn't have mine on the lot either, so I got a Bronco. We used to go full out and get a luxury coupe like a big old Cadillac Coupe deVille (and not one of the newer bunch & styles, all of which ride like shit) or a Mercury Marquis. But they got really expensive and pretty hard to find around here. What really sucked was the prices just about everywhere around here. Just last September we got a full sized Nissan Altima for the same number of days and it was only $227. This year I couldn’t even get a subcompact for that. I wasn’t happy at all paying nearly $400 for the Malibu thru Hertz and am still fuming pissed about the additional $200 I had to add to that to get a damn Ford Fusion. GO DODGERS!!!
