Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman suspended after using a homophobic slur on air
The veteran MLB broadcaster was heard over a mic using the slur as the Fox Sports Ohio coverage of the game returned from a commercial break. Brennaman later apologized on camera saying: "If I have hurt anyone out there, I can’t tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart, I am very, very sorry." The Cincinnati Reds have suspended Brennanman from broadcasting, apologized to the LGBTQ community and described the remark as "horrific" and "homophobic."
From Wikipedia
On August 19, 2020, while providing commentary for the first game of a home doubleheader between the Reds and the Kansas City Royals, Brenneman was caught on a hot mic referring to an undisclosed location as "one of the fag capitals of the world." Brennaman later apologized and was taken off air during the second game of the doubleheader, with Jim Day providing commentary after the top of the fifth inning. The Reds suspended him from doing broadcasts that day.

Personally, I've never used the slur "fag." Not sure why. Used others though. "Fruit" used to be my favorite. That's if I used any slur at all. I've just never had a problem with gay people. You should hear me when someone cuts me off in traffic.
For all I know Brennaman was referring to Los Angeles. We certainly have the reputation. I worked for a company where the running gag was I was the ONLY heterosexual male employee they had. Certainly their only manager. I hung out with those guys. They were fun.
But Brennaman is going to be 57 in a few weeks. He grew up in another era. That was a colossal mistake he made. He thought the mic was cold. He should have to make more public apologies. Do community service work in the gay community. I even agree with the suspension. Let's not take it further than that though. The goal should be to educate people to the plight (is that the right word? Because being gay isn't really a plight if you're happy with it.) of others. You should NOT want to embitter people though. That's no way to win them over. It would further polarize. No pickets. No protests. No petitions to get him fired. Embrace him. Show him you're no pariah. Your own child could be gay by an act of God. Would you turn your back on your own child? I couldn't do that. I know of a fundamental Christian conservative whose daughter is gay. He loves her. If he can do it, so can others.

If he can do it, so can others. Problem is in this PC world, he said what is now equivalent to the “N” word in the eyes of the gay community and it’s likely going to cost him his job with both the local as well as national Fox broadcasting. He’s a decent announcer and has never been one to shy away from being critical of the Reds, their management and ownership, much if not more so like his dad. Some say too critical. But I truly prefer that over some of these “homers” who are completely up their teams asses, even when they totally suck. If there’s one thing I learned from the great Mr Scully, it’s favoritism stays off the air. Was Vin happy and excited when the Dodgers won? Absolutely! But you’d never know it by the tone of his voice. Even his probably most famous line (after Gibson’s HR) is more matter of fact than rah rah. I’ve used that term a zillion times but never directly towards homosexuals and almost always toward someone I knew WASN’T gay, primarily when playing or watching sports. Like when someone hits a game winning homer against our boys, we’d say “that guy’s gay” or “what a fag”. It’s just something I grew up with and will still say from time to time in jest. Does that make me racist against homosexuality? Probably a bit. But I also know and have associated with a number of gays and I don’t really have any issues or problems with any of them or they with me. But it’s still a word that is offensive to the LBGT community and mic on or off, Thom should have known better than to say / use it during a broadcast that was heard by now tens of millions. The worst thing is it got that old bat Marge Schott trending on Twitter. And I’m sure over the next few days they’ll have plenty of comparisons to her legacy and known racism to this incident. Way to go, Thom! GO DODGERS!!!

Marge Schott is still alive? It's true. Evil really never dies.
Ralph Lawler of the Clippers was the absolute worst homer I ever heard. "BINGO!" That's when a Clipper hit a three pointer with the team down by 28 in the fourth quarter. Have some dignity, man. Probably one of the main reasons I still don't like that team. Ralph & Sterling.

Same with that one moron I think announces for the White Sox with his “Put it in the books - she gone”, whether they’re up by a couple or down by ten. REALLY annoying. GO DODGERS!!!

Thom has been dismissed by national Fox and his NFL duties. He’s been suspended by local / regional Fox and from broadcasting Reds games. I don’t see him returning to the booth anytime soon, if ever.
But you never know - announcers have said worse and kept or gotten their jobs back after a year or two sabbatical.
GO DODGERS!!!

They have their own prejudices. How would they like to be judged this way?

It’s getting harder and harder to be who you are in this country without someone getting pissed off about it. There’s no way you’ll ever convince me that most of the brass at Fox haven’t used and continue to use that word. And how about the NFL itself? Those “good old boys” owners? C’mon - get real! Even the players themselves. I remember a pretty famous Dolphin who lost his job for taunting another player on the team that was gay. He got picked up almost immediately by another team and continued playing for years after that. So Thom got caught in a “faux pas”; he apologized (whether sincere or not) and should not lose his career and livelihood over a “word”. GO DODGERS!!!
