He's up for consideration again. The two guys who for sure should make it are Ted Simmons & Tommy John.

Garvey’s stats compare favourably with a number of other first basemen of that and other eras already enshrined in Cooperstown. Let’s get the number six retired and up on the ring with Reese, Snider, Koufax and all the others that wore the blue. GO DODGERS!!!

His overall career stats aren't all that impressive, til one realizes the surgery that bears his name and how he was a better pitcher after. Also, if you look closer, you see that he pitched till he was 46, had a K/BB ratio of less than 2-1, a WHIP of 1.28, yet a 3.34 ERA, not bad at all. He was truly an artist on the mound. He got hitters out with guile, not overpowering stuff. He knew how to get hitters to hit the ball right where the fielders were. Johnny Bench admitted he hated to face him and Pete Rose said, "it's great he had this surgery but did the docs have to give him Sandy Koufax's arm?" I'm not sure about Ted Simmons. He was a GOOD catcher who had some great moments. Dave Parker and Steve Garvey deserve consideration but their career stats don't jump off the page at you but they were both clutch.

I remember Parker for his immense talent & crappy attitude in Pittsburgh. He was a drug addict who somehow managed to put on a ton of weight while snorting cocaine. How does that work? As much as he accomplished there was this feeling he could have done much more.
Give Tommy John that almost year & a half back that he missed after surgery & he's about at that magic 300 win mark.

Was reading an article on ESPN site that broke down every eligible player and their possibility of getting elected.
Not sure if this group has been voted on yet, but the writer gave Garv “very little” chance of being voted in and advised he simply didn’t have the numbers and it was “time to move on” from our number 6.
I’ve brought this up before and still believe that his stats are VERY close to those of one of his biggest competitors of the time, Tony Perez. And Garvey achieved them in fewer games and years than Perez.
The HOF has become a bit of a joke and has always been and will continue to be a “popularity” contest with most of the writers and players responsible for voting new members in.
And we all know Garvey wasn’t exactly the Mr. Clean / nice guy he seemed to portray, whereas Tony Perez was considered a local hero and all around saint both here and in Montreal.
During his eligibility, every year there was a major media blitz here in Cin City as well as nationally to get Tony in. I don’t ever remember them doing the same for Garvey, especially nationally.
I think he deserves to go in. But he’ll probably get passed over once again, just like another deserving Dodger Hodges was for decades.
GO DODGERS!!!

Highly doubt Garvey gets in. And his numbers aren't really close to Tony Perez, JR. I hate to say it. I don't even think Perez should have made it and his numbers are way better. Perez/Garvey 379 to 272 HR 1652 to 1308 RBI .279/.341/.463/.804 to .294/.329/.446/.775 OPS 54 to 38 WAR Garvey has the MVP and the 10 ASG appearances but it's just not enough in reality. His numbers just don't compare to the HOF first basemen. www.baseball-almanac.com/hof/hofst1b.shtml

He also played in almost 400 MORE games than Garvey, so that’s nearly two and a half additional seasons he had to add to his stats than our number 6. And despite Perez leading Garv in nearly every category, I’d much rather have him at the plate in a key or game winning situation. But if guys like Hodges, Newcomb, etc. aren’t getting in, I don’t see much chance of Popeye making it either. I personally think he should because he was my idol growing up, but I don’t get a vote and the sportswriters have made it abundantly clear they disagree. GO DODGERS!!!

I have a friend of mine here who was a huge Garvey fan as a kid, even though he’s not a Dodger fan. Guy loves baseball. Anyway he calls into sports radio every year or so detailing why Garvey belongs. He does make a good argument, to the point that Mike Francesa actually agrees or comes pretty close to it.
You said it, if Hodges isn’t in then Garvey won’t be either IMO. He just won’t get enough votes.
