Sly was resting on a wall behind my home this morning. "Come here boy. I have some salmon for you." He wouldn't move. Oh no. Did it happen? I had to climb up on the wall & go get him. He's still alive. Just barely though. Was looking at a chart. He's a domestic longhair. They're supposed to live 12-14 years. He's 16. It's been a great ride, little feller. I have no idea how Sleet is going to react. She loves her big brother. Sorry to hear about Sly. Sleet will probably be a “loner” for awhile - that’s how Harper reacted when Izzy was confined to the basement and even when she went down to do her business she stayed away from her injury. I think cats know when something’s amiss and although Harp’s always been a bit of a loner, she was even more so those couples of weeks. Hope Sly has an easy trip across the Rainbow Bridge. 😢😢😢 GO DODGERS!!!

I thought maybe the vet's office was closed. They had recently done some remodeling. While running errands today, I swung by there & there was a line out the door & around the corner. I had emailed them three times asking if the vet thought Sly was dying the last time he saw him. Two months ago. No answer. Today I emailed & then called too. Kinda chewed them out, but not really. I need them. Or so I thought. John & I had called this before it was said. The answer back was the doctor would have to see Sly to make that determination. You already saw him just two months ago. Was he dying then?
Dug up the cremation place. Looks like Sly is headed towards that final roundup. God bless him for the time we spent together. His life expectancy was supposed to be 12-14 years. He gave me 16. At least he protected Sleet long enough to get her established among the other cats around here.

Our first Siamese almost made it to that age; her mutt brother was almost 20. Our current two are ten and six and we are expecting them to give us at least another 10 - 15 years each. I’ve read about cats making it to their mid-20’s, but I think they are pretty rare. We’ve always taken ours in for annual checkups and shots and they’ve never been put in peril or even exposed to the outside world other than from our screened in porch. They’re funny little animals - loving when THEY want to be and loners the other 95% of the time. Have a good trip, Sly. You and your stories of mischief will be missed. GO DODGERS!!!

Just checking around. Getting things in order. $85.00 to cremate Sly. They have extras like saving his ashes. You know other cats' remains would be in that too. Totally unnecessary. They have extras like his paw prints in clay. We'll see about that. His vet appointment (with another vet) is the 14th of this month. I would be shocked if he makes it that far. I REFUSE to give this other vet even one more nickel.

The little feller just had breakfast & went back outside. He ate a lot. Excellent. He had chicken & milk. The next thing I know he's drinking out of the toilet. NOOOOO!!

Spent another $398.00 on Sly today. Blood tests were $296.00. Is it that much for people? But I had to have that done or why bother at all? This is a different vet. The first one isn't seeing another penny. I told the new one to just level with me if he's dying. The results will be in tomorrow.
He's 16 & we talked a bit about making him comfortable. I want him to die at home. He deserves that much. It would also make sense to Sleet if she saw him dead. I didn't just take him away & he never came back. We don't do that here.

Vets have a good gig but I could never do that job - something about animals that gets me emotionally attached almost immediately. I can’t even watch those SPCA commercials. Those charges don’t seem too bad, especially for the west coast. Our last visit for Izzie’s spider bite was around $300 for about 10 minutes and three injections. It’s the price we pay for our “children” but worth every cent. She’s come back nicely from the incident that could have killed her and the bite area has gone from the size of a fifty cent piece to a small scabby slit only around 1/2 long. Her fur is growing back and her spirit has returned to its usual silliness. Hope Sly decides to stick around for awhile but if not he’s comfortable in his remaining time her on the big blue rock. GO DODGERS!!!

Sly ate twice today. I had to lure him to his carrier with food. The new vet had gotten his old records & reminded me of how big he was. 26 lbs. He wasn't fat either. Just one bad ass big cat.

We’ve been going to the same vet for over 30 years now, dating back to before we were married and took in a friend of a friends dog who just happened to be pregnant when we got her, unbeknownst to us until she dropped seven puppies on us Memorial Day weekend. We were able to give them all away but one that my mom decided she wanted to keep. Afterward, we took her to a vet that was near where I and my mom lived at the time and we’ve been using them since. Only twice have we gone anywhere else. Once was for a surgery our dog needed that our vet could not perform due to it requiring a new laser machine he did not have. The other time was to try out a vet that was significantly closer to where we now live (we could literally walk there if we needed to) for one of our kitties. But even though it is much closer & obviously more convenient, we just didn’t like the “feel” of the place. The vets were very impersonable and the entire building reeked of urine. The oldest vet at the place we go is kinda like that - we refer to him as Dr. Laughs - but that’s the way he has ALWAYS been since we started seeing him. Very “down to business”, but also very good and gentle with our pets. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the man smile. His associates are all very friendly and nice, although I’ve really only met two of the four. The wife tends to handle most vet visits for annual shots & checkups. I only go if it’s bad, like this recent spider bite. And even then it was just to drive because with the Covid our vet was actually requiring everyone to stay in their cars until called in and then only allowing one handler in the office. Finding the right vet is almost as important as finding the right personal physician which I know very little about since I go to the doctor around as often as Halley’s Comet passes. GO DODGERS!!!

That's how these people were too. The parking spaces were numbered. They had their phone number on the signs over each individual stall. You called in & they asked which number you were parked at. Then a nurse came out & you explained what was going on with your pet in the parking lot. She would take your pet inside. Within a few minutes someone else would call you to get your intake information. They wanted credit card information so they didn't have to handle cash. Unfortunately all I had was cash. All in all, very organized. One lady was there forever. She was sitting in a jeep in stall #2 with her engine running to keep the air conditioner on. She was there when I arrived & still there when I came back to get Sly. Compare that with where I was going before. They have a waiting room that can handle maybe five people. There's always a line out the door & around the corner. That vet just crossed the line when he had his receptionist relay the information that I would have to take my cat back in to find out if he's dying. Motherfucker. I already paid you, asshole. On June 12th. I'm not paying you twice. Who conducts an exam & doesn't discuss the results? Bite me.

So the vet said he looked okay. His blood test results did. We're going to give him steroids. An ultra-sound is over $500.00. That would be the next thing if he doesn't respond.

Do your thing! Good sign that the bloodwork was negative. Animals have a way of bouncing back and recovering that I think is sometimes more complex and effective than humans. When Di brought Izzie back out and her backside looked like it has been put through a meat grinder just a few weeks ago, we were REALLY concerned just how it was ever going to heal and return to normal. It’s amazing that in another week or so she’ll be completely healed with no noticeable scars or hair loss. GO DODGERS!!!

Sly looks like death & I've already started feeding him two breakfasts to put weight back on. Both him & Sleet love their morning canned food. Then they eat dry food during the day. I gave Sly a second helping of steroid laced salmon this afternoon. Maybe he'll become the catonator. "I'll be back. Meow."

Our cats have always been indoor only, other than our screened in enclosure which allows them to sit in the windows and torment the neighbors dogs as well as bird and bunny watch. They’ve also always been dry food eaters. The fact that what they leave in the litter box from it is pretty disgusting and the wet, canned foods are pretty disgusting on their own before being digested was enough for us to never purchase or get our kitties hooked on. We have tried it a couple of times with all of them when they weren’t feeling well and the vet recommended, but none of them ever liked it and they would just walk away with their noses up. Guess they didn’t like the smell either. GO DODGERS!!!
