The other day I was reminiscing about Frank McCourt & Scott Boras. How cantankerous their business relationship became after Adrian Beltre left & McCourt tried to salvage his worthless reputation by overpaying JD Drew as a show that he's financially solvent enough to run a professional sports team in a major market like LA. Both Beltre & Drew were Boras clients. I think Scott inked those two clients to a combined 120 million+ that winter. Later the animosity Frank still harbored resurfaced during the Manny Ramirez negotiations. Frank was trying to make it look like Manny & Boras were being unreasonable in their demands. Frank was the only reasonable one here. 45 million dollars for two years. Yup. That's the offer. 25 + 20. Scott pounced on it & said we'll take it just like that. McCourt was livid. Turns out Manny was getting paid over FIVE years. Not two. Frank threatened to cut off negotiations at that point because Boras had publicly exposed him for the broke ass deadbeat he was at the time.
Of course Mark Walter has proven he's no Frank McCourt & that's a good thing. But then again, we renegotiated David Freese's contract to save a bit (thanks for the link about the Dodgers staying under the tax threshold as they search for new investors), & there's the potential for a situation with Kenta Maeda because of how unusually his contract is structured, & how the Dodgers had to turn to him to help out in the bullpen (again) last summer. These sports agencies have become multibillion dollar enterprises & have to be dealt with accordingly. They have a fiduciary responsibility to each & every client they represent to get them the best deal with whoever. However, the dog & pony show produced by McCourt & Boras prove that no one is above grudge bearing petty jealousies.
So who has the ability to help or hinder us moving forward? These are the highest paid Dodgers, & the Dodgers we will be most likely be building around, or who might be attractive trade bait.
Clayton Kershaw - Excel Sports
Matt Kemp - Reynolds Sports
Rich Hill - ACES Baseball
Justin Turner - The Legacy Agency (Who have been losing some of their top agents recently.)
Kenley Jensen - Wasserman Media Group
Hyun-Jin Ryu - Boras Corp.
Yasiel Puig - Wasserman Media Group
Alex Wood - ACES Baseball
David Freese - CAA Sports
Kenta Maeda - Wasserman Media Group
Max Muncy - Hub Sports Management
Corey Seager - Boras Corp.
Cody Bellinger - Boras Corp.
Ross Stripling - Wasserman Sports Management
Julio Urias - Boras Corp.
Walker Buehler - Excel Sports
Alex Verdugo - Ballengee Group
Kershaw is getting older & already signed an extension. He seems to be happy here. So I wouldn't worry about any negative influence he might exert over Walker Buehler. I wonder if Clayton recommended that agency to young Buehler.
Didn't Dave Stewart represent Kemp? And Matt has one foot out the door anyway.
ACES has Hill & Wood. No problem there. Hill is old enough to not take things personally. Wood seems to, but who the hell cares? Pitch better & you won't get demoted. Being with a different agency doesn't negate how one player interacts with another. Players like Turner & Maeda would be popular anywhere they plied their trade. Wood likely isn't getting invited out by a whole of teammates after his performance in the postseason though, nor would he be greatly missed on the roster.
The Legacy has Turner. That appears to be it.
Wasserman has Jansen, Puig, Maeda & Stripling. Jansen had to be convinced by Justin Turner to take less to return. Puig is 'mercurial' to say the least. Both Maeda & Stripling were sent to the bullpen by the Dodgers' needs at the time.
CAA has Freese.
Hub has Muncy. Muncy might get traded, but the Dodgers' re-signing of Freese could indicate their desire for a first base platoon in 2019.
Verdugo is all alone with Ballengee.
Boras has Ryu, Seager, Bellinger & Urias. He would also appear to have the Dodgers by the short ones in the near future.
Right now I would focus on Wasserman if I were the Dodgers & kissing some ass. They don't have to go overboard. Just keep in mind that dealings with one client could have a ripple effect with others.
