At the meetup the night before at Hooters in Santa Monica, Chuck was sitting by himself when I arrived. I sat down right next to him & the tension was palpable. He stiffened up. After about ten minutes of sweating bullets he got up & sat down with a stranger, that I later found out was a sheriff's deputy in Phoenix.
Ken was buying drinks for everyone. God bless Ken (he's gone now). He wanted to be everyone's friend. There were some pretty decent people in Chuck's cult. Some not so much so. I had a light beer & a shot of Absolut. Ken was buzzed & ran into my table & knocked my drinks over.
At the end of the evening there was only Ken, his wife & me left. The bill arrived & it was for about $450.00. Ken's jaw dropped. I gave him $50.00 for my beer & shot. He told me that wasn't necessary. I said keep it. I've been in the service industry. Take care of our waitress. She had been very nice.
I sometimes think back on that & can't believe how tacky those people were, & how they took advantage of Ken's generosity. Chuck especially. He was still building that site & wanted a store. His plan was to get Ken to buy & warehouse the Dodger merchandise. I guess Chuck would get a percentage of the proceeds without fronting a dollar of his own. I pleaded with Ken to not put himself out on a limb like that. He was already having financial difficulties. Another reason for Chuck to dislike me. If you look at his site, there's an unfinished store.
When that site started out & it me & him as the vanguard. I recruited more members than anyone else, including Chuck himself. Most MLB members knew him as the windy guy who would hijack threads with his arguments with Dodgerwood.
Later Chuck (who was online 24/7) took in three foster children. He already had two of his own he was ignoring. I take parenting seriously. I've seen foster kids used as cottage industries. It's repulsive. He went in to get one foster child, saw the money available, & left with three. That was it for him & me.
My mother was pretty much a hillbilly. Born in 1925 into a redneck environment. Dad was half Miami Indian. So he knew racism from the receiving end. But Dad kinda grew up an orphan & didn't get the whole family thing. Mom was the youngest of ten children. Blood in, blood out. She never took to my black wife. Our daughter walked on water from the moment she was born, however. She was blood. You don't mess with family. Tessa proved to me she inherited that trait the night she kicked my buddy's ass (he was a correctional officer, like Utah).
Chuck & I just have widely disparate views of how you treat people. I instinctively rebel against controlling people. Chuck likes to control. My attitudes conflicted with some posters here. They wanted to control. I have a loose hand on the reins. I allow most arguments to take their natural course. Only if it becomes disruptive do I intervene. Chuck wanted to ban or erase posts that criticized the Dodgers. No doubt that was part of his campaign of courting the Dodgers to become a sort of unofficial Dodgers site. He even recruited Benny Platt, whom he had given me a phone number to complain about. Chuck wanted Benny fired as Dodger board moderator. I never used that number even though I didn't care for Benny. Later Benny said *I* was the leader of the rebellion to get him fired. I guess Chuck had convinced Benny it was me & not him. Then he gave Benny a platform for his articles on Chuck's new board. I met Benny at the get together. Chuck thought it would be funny. He led me over to meet this guy. He was a sort of smallish guy in a suit. Everyone knew me as Billy. We were shaking hands.
"Billy I would like you to meet Benny. Benny, this is Billy."
I wasn't thinking. My hand stopped moving but I didn't let go. My eyes narrowed as I studied Benny. Benny said...
"Don't hate me, Billy."
Without saying a word, I let go of Benny's hand & walked away.
Did Benny ever figure out he had been hoodwinked by Chuck?
Ray called Chuck out on his hypocrisy & him, Mark (ElCapitan) & I all got banned. Okay. I had already stopped posting on his board anyway. I wanted my money back though. Now he's asking for more? Anyone who gives him money deserves what happens to them. This guy is totally unscrupulous. His board stopped growing the day of that ill-conceived purge. Ray built this site for refugees of the MLB board. Not to make money. He already has a job. Apparently Chuck doesn't. He's trying to turn his obsession into a money making enterprise. Whatever.
