In this day & age you pretty much have to be. The players have way more job security than a manager. But not to the point where it interferes with your decisions or integrity.
Roberts starting Kershaw rather than Hill smacks of compromising to make a player happy when you're (your TEAM is) chasing a championship. Him maybe pissing off Caleb Ferguson, rather than making him feel important coming out of the bullpen, is just being bulldozed by a kid. Did the Dodgers benefit from having Alexander instead of Ferguson?
Learn Dave. Learn. This isn't an ass kissing contest. Be your own man.

I'm sure you know this, but if Dave hasn't learned to be his own man by now especially at his age then he never will.
Dave Roberts is who he is. A man who cares more about his players feelings than winning championships.

I don't get this part, what do you mean starting Kershaw over Hill? In Game 1?

In Game 1? Hill had had more rest than Kershaw. His last start had been on October 16th. 71 pitches. He pitched one inning on the 19th. 17 pitches. He next started on October 27th. Eleven days between starts. Kershaw started October 17th. 98 pitches. He pitched one inning October 20th. 15 pitches. He next started October 23rd. 79 pitches. Six days between starts.

So you're talking about Game 1. That's fair. A tough choice to make but it may have worked. Maybe another blunder by Doc... makes sense to me.

Doc didn’t want to piss Kersh off again by not letting him start the first game of the series (as he has pretty much done his entire career). But he was considering Hill and should have went with that thought.
Remember Kersh’s game two against the Braves? Eight innings of shut out baseball. Now I’m not going to be so arrogant as to say he could or would have done the same with the Sox, especially with the weather conditions.
But if Hill pitches game one like he pitched on Saturday and Kersh pitches even anywhere close to his Atlanta outing, maybe we come back from Boston up two zero or at the very least tied.
But then again, we or Doc could have blown both starts there with inept and questionable bullpen decisions, the worst of which is continually trying to get more than one inning out of Jansen.
Didn’t work last year, sure as hell didn’t work this year,
GO DODGERS!!!

There's 2 known facts about Kershaw that continue to be ignored by management, probably not just Dave Roberts.
1. Kershaw sucks pitching game 1s on the road.
2. Kershaw sucks pitching elimination games, regardless of location.
Kershaw sucks under pressure. Plain and simple. When the pressure is the highest he folds, 99% of the time.
He's a great regular season pitcher, but not postseason and that's because he's usually called upon when the pressure is at it's highest.
Roberts should have know this and because he didn't do anything about it tells me enough about him as a manager to let him go.
Kershaw should have pitched game 2 if we won game one or game 3 if we lost game one. Hill should have started this series.

And one last thing...
I knew we were going to lose game one the minute I heard Kershaw was starting.
I'm ok with Kershaw opting out of his contract.
I wish him the best of luck wherever he goes.
