On what many of us consider a down year (so far), the Dodgers have made the postseason for the sixth straight time. We've had our share of 'DDF' blasts & 'geek' jokes. I've even said if the front office is in the dugout they need to get F out. But the criticism that always perplexed me was the one leveled at ownership. Supposedly Mark Walter was a bean counter. How anyone could reach that sketchy conclusion is a total mystery. Every year (before this one, where he was resetting the luxury tax) Walter pushed unreal financial limits in his quest for a dynasty. But we heard things like how much better a postseason the Cubs had because they signed Morrow & Darvish. How they got Tyler Chatwood (see bullpen). That same person explained away playoff failures by those two former Dodgers by saying they might have been burnt out by the long postseason. Wouldn't they then have suffered the same fate on the Dodgers if we had kept them? Someone else took the opposite approach & accused Walter of recklessly spending the life savings of innocent & helpless women & orphans. Which is it? Can we now admit Mark Walter is the best sports owner Los Angeles has had since Jerry Buss? Buss was the best since Walter O'Malley. The Dodgers & Lakers exuded class under their reigns. The Dodgers have become the class of baseball again under Walter. No more do we have to bribe a Gary Sheffield, or listen to the childlike tantrums of Mike Piazza in the hope of getting or retaining them. Players want to come to the Dodgers. Players take less to remain Dodgers. This is a golden age for Los Angeles baseball fans. I know I'll carry it to the grave. The naysayers & cliff jumpers can cry all they want. It won't wipe the smile off my face.

It won't wipe the smile off my face. On this last day of the season, it's a real nail biter! After we swept the Rockies over a week ago, I was sure we'd coast to the title, but we're tied now, and we MUST win today and the Rockies MUST lose. I hate the wild card! I want four divisions and one more team in each league. Sure, the possibility of a sub-.500 team winning a division exists, but it also almost happened in 1973, when the Mets won but 82 games. Oh, and, I admit I've enjoyed it, no more interleague play and no more designated hitter. read my signature about that!

Gonna be extra tough getting this division locked up now. Scherzer was gonna pitch today now he’s not. Nats putting a 5.45 era scrub in instead and we’ve got Hill rather than Beuhler today. Hopefully the Nats aren’t putting in their A team on the field. Definitely a must win for us today to keep pace and force the playoff game tomorrow...

Scherzer and the Nats TOTALLY pussed out by tanking today. I doubt he wins the Cy Young even if he would have thrown a no no today. deGrom has pretty much had it locked for most of the year. So there’s no reason Max couldn’t have pitched today, other than he and the Nats are complete pussies. I guess the days of putting your best team on the field and / or playing for pride went the same way as the strike zone - both unrecognizable for years. Let’s hope Ferris is up to the task for game 163 and we take our sixth title in a row. It worries me that the last time we scored a couple of touchdowns, we completely whiffed the following day. GO DODGERS!!!

Can't possibly fathom a 10-9 pitcher winning CYA but the media frenzy behind deGrom may make that happen. The only reason deGrom wins is because Scherzer won the last 2. Scherzer led the league in:
Wins IP SO - with 300! CG WHIP H per 9 SO per 9 SO/BB ratio
deGrom led in ERA and HR per 9.
And Max wanted to pitch, Dave Martinez wouldn't let him. But then again, all the other teams laid down yesterday too, including the Giants.

I heard the exact opposite on MLB-TV. They reported Max DIDN’T want to pitch his last game in Denver for fear of what might have resulted in another possible loss as well as a bump in his ERA.
ESPN and Vegas are certainly loving every minute of not one, but two 163rd games. Gives them a full afternoon of live programming that would normally be scheduled with Sunday recaps and other fillers and gamblers multiple more chances to lose money.
GO DODGERS!!!

JR, here you go... www.mlb.com/news/max-scherzer-wants-to-pitch-closing-day-2018/c-296429894"If there's an elimination game on the line here against the Rockies, they want me to pitch," Scherzer said. "And for me the way I look at it, if there's a playoff atmosphere on the line where somebody can get knocked out, that's a heck of an environment to pitch in. "Even though we're playing for nothing, at least we can be able to toe the rubber knowing that the atmosphere here with the crowd and the other team would be playing at probably the highest level of any point I would face this year. Why wouldn't I want to compete in that?" "I want to pitch," he said. "But I also respect the decision if the Nationals decide they want to go in a different direction."
