I know he's faced with a major decision: Ole Miss or sign with us. I do hope he chooses the latter. If MLB doesn't work out for him, he'll have a couple million to pay his tuition at the university.
It's probably not fair to compare him to Kershaw. In the '06 draft, here are the comments about Kershaw: "Considered to be the top high school arm in the draft, Kershaw's fastball sits in the mid-90s to go along with a big curve and workable changeup. An oblique injury hasn't scared teams off."
Comments about draftees were much more concise, whereas today, they're much more detailed. Scouts and ex-MLB pitchers have said that he only needs to fine tune his pitching before he'll be in the bigs, just like they said about Kershaw and he was in our rotation at age 20. One comment is that "teams covet his right arm". That has to tell us all something.
IF he signs, I'll be watching his progress very closely. I'm pulling for him to join the rotation in '20, but it's more realistic that he'll need at least another year of seasoning first. He could be the perfect replacement for Kershaw.

I've never understood the rationale about the importance of an education when we're talking about millions of dollars. Instead of saving tens of thousands on an athletic scholarship, you can pursue a doctorate & have change left over.
