Well, we're 21-27, not a good record any way you look at it. However, after we got humiliated by the Reds, the worst team in the bigs, four straight, we've now won four out of five. There's no rhyme nor reason why one team beats up on another, which is one reason baseball is a funny game.
But is momentum shifting? Kershaw will be back before too long, Hill will be back in less time than originally thought, the remaining members of the rotation plus Beuhler have done quite well, the bullpen has settled down, the offense is coming around. The NL West is the tightest of all, with only six games separating the first place Snakes from the last place Catholic Monks.
This season reminds me most of the 1985 team. On this date, our record was 19-21, we were in 4th place and 4-1/2 GB just like now, and the Padres, like the Snakes now, went into a big slump and on July 13, we took over first and stayed there, despite Steve Howe letting us down. Our momentum was strong despite him. The Snakes are our only real competition in the division and we're getting hot while they're in a big slump. It's still pretty early but only a few days ago, we were 8 behind. We proved last year we have the horses and if we can stay at least relatively injury free, we'll be in the playoffs again and then the WS.
We're in good company! The '51 Giants, the '78 Yanks, and most notably, the '69 Mets to name just three.
