If Clayton re-injured his back then I guess the decision as to whether or not to extend him has been answered.

If Clayton re-injured his back then I guess the decision as to whether or not to extend him has been answered. Why are the baseball gods mad at our team? Every time I turn around, another player in on the DL. Now maybe Kershaw again, after he pitched five great innings. But then again, his back might have tightened cos he's rusty and a trip to the kiropractor will fix him up. But if he's on the DL again, I hate to say this, but he's becoming a liability. His velocity is way down now, and that again might be cos of rust. If so, he showed he can get around that and maybe reinvent himself. We'll know later today what his fate is.

Yeah, might be because of rust. Joe and Orel talked about how he's working on mechanics with Honeycutt too. So that may be part of it. Last night he was barely touching 90, his breaking stuff was pretty good though.
It's becoming more and more evident that his opt out might never happen.

June 1, 2018 6:56 pm Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw: Diagnosed with back strain by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Kershaw, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday, was diagnosed with a lower-back strain -- an injury that cost him five weeks in 2017.
While this is not surprising, given that his start was cut short Thursday due to the injury and he was sent for an MRI, it confirms the fear that Kershaw's owners may be without him for another extended period. Brock Stewart and Dennis Santana are short-term options to take Kershaw's rotation spot, and Kenta Maeda (hip) will likely come off the DL in the coming weeks as well.

I think this clinches it. There will be no opt out....

In a way this is a relief. Not that Clayton is hurt. Just that this was going to be a tough decision. One that would have had people on either side arguing. Practicality vs. sentimentality.

Have to agree. Now they likely don't have a choice, and that should please the fan base I think.

I think this clinches it. There will be no opt out.... This makes the FO's decision easier, although I'd still consider trading him at some point before his contract expires. Kershaw may still opt out at the end of this season considering that he'll be the best pitcher available and that other teams may feel better giving Kershaw a 5 year contract going into his age 31 season than his age 33 season, despite his health.

Arte Moreno would love to have him because he's a Dodger icon.

Only thing is I Dont think he has much trade value at all right now so why bother trading him? Bad back, biceps tendinitis, issues with velocity, a possible opt out or owed 65 million over 2 years.... who is giving up a lot for him? We are going to be in the race anyway, so there's is no way he gets traded anyhow IMO.

Clayton can also block a trade because of his status as a 5 & 10 year man, & void the trade at the end of the 2019 season. It's in his contract.

Oh! I forgot. That's if he's traded AFTER the season. If he's traded DURING the season he can void it after the World Series.

Good points about 5 and 10 and voidable terms...

The “voiding” thing doesn’t really affect his trade value though since he already has the opt out.

Very True, but it would matter next year I guess....
I don't see a trade anyway, that would really surprise me...
