Arizona Diamondbacks @ Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday, May 9, 7:10 PM PT, Dodger Stadium TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), SportsNet LA, SNLA Spanish Radio: AM 570 LA Sports, KTNQ 1020, Radio Korea 1540 That was just a gut wrenching loss last night. Storm back to tie the game only to lose in extra innings. Our bullpen was amazing until Garcia gave up that homer. We awaken today to find ourselves 15-20 / .429 & 9.0 games behind the Diamondbacks. Thank God for the Padres. Arizona is 24-11 / .686 & 3.5 games ahead of the Rockies for 1st place in the NL West. They're 11-5 on the road. Patrick Corbin, LHP Corbin looks to continue his strong start to the 2018 season. He’s 4-0 with a 2.15 ERA, and one of his seven starts was a complete game. Corbin also leads the D-backs in innings (46) and strikeouts (60). www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/corbipa01.shtmlwww.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=corbipa01&t=p&year=2018www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ARI/ARI201804040.shtmlwww.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ARI/ARI201805030.shtmlwww.baseball-reference.com/play-index/batter_vs_pitcher.cgi?request=1&submitter=1&pitcher=corbipa01&min_year_game=2012&max_year_game=2018&post=1&opp_id=LAD&bats=any&c1gtlt=gt&c2gtlt=gt&orderby=PA&orderby_dir=desc&orderby_second=Name&orderby_dir_second=ascThree of our most effective hitters against Corbin aren't available. www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/pfx.php?month=5&day=3&year=2018&game=gid_2018_05_03_lanmlb_arimlb_1%2F&pitchSel=571578&prevGame=gid_2018_05_03_lanmlb_arimlb_1%2F&prevDate=53&league=mlbSlider. May 9, 2018 12:26 pm Diamondbacks' T.J. McFarland: Picks up win in extras by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire McFarland covered 1.1 scoreless frames in relief to pick up the win Tuesday in the Diamondbacks' 8-5 triumph over the Dodgers in 12 innings. He struck out one and retired all four batters he faced.
McFarland was considered a spot-start candidate for Thursday's series opener against the Nationals with Braden Shipley (elbow) surprisingly joining Robbie Ray (oblique) on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday, but the 16-pitch, four-out appearance probably takes that off the table. If manager Torey Lovullo does tab the lefty for the Thursday start on short rest, it would likely be as part of a bullpen game that would result in McFarland facing a limited pitch count.

May 9, 2018 12:21 pm Diamondbacks' Jorge De La Rosa: Collects fifth hold by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire De La Rosa was credited with his fifth hold of the season after retiring both of the batters he faced Tuesday in the Diamondbacks' 8-5 win over the Dodgers in 12 innings.
De La Rosa entered the game with one out in the seventh inning, coming on in relief of Fernando Salas with a lefty-on-lefty matchup on tap. After getting Alex Verdugo to ground out, De La Rosa induced a flyout from switch hitter Yasmani Grandal to escape the frame unscathed. Though he got the job done Tuesday, De La Rosa is still expected to see the bulk of his work against same-handed hitters, with full-inning appearances more likely to come in lower-leverage spots.

May 9, 2018 12:16 pm Diamondbacks' Fernando Salas: Collects hold in Tuesday's win by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Salas notched his second hold of the season after retiring both of the batters he faced Tuesday in the Diamondbacks' 8-5 win over the Dodgers in 12 innings.
Salas was the first of eight relievers to take the hill for the Diamondbacks on the night, coming on for starter Zack Godley with two outs and one on in the sixth inning. After striking out Austin Barnes to end the threat, Salas came back out for the bottom of the seventh and induced a Chris Taylor flyout before giving way to Jorge De La Rosa for a lefty-on-lefty matchup. Salas is expected to see most of his use this season in the middle innings, so don't expect him to regularly be in the mix for holds.

May 9, 2018 12:12 pm Diamondbacks' John Ryan Murphy: Hits home run No. 3 by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Murphy went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run Tuesday in the Diamondbacks' 8-5 win over the Dodgers in 12 innings.
With three home runs and six extra-base knocks in 44 plate appearances, Murphy has been a surprise power source in a small sample of work. Though Murphy has seen less action to date than No. 1 backstop Alex Avila, he could ascend to the top of the depth chart if Avila fails to demonstrate much offensive progress in his subsequent starts. The 31-year-old Avila is slashing just .184/.286/.306 (62 wRC+) against right-handed pitching this season, a far cry from his .249/.361/.424 career line in those matchups.

May 9, 2018 12:05 pm Diamondbacks' Nick Ahmed: Breaks slump with two hits by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Ahmed went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run in the Diamondbacks' 8-5 win over the Dodgers on Tuesday in 12 innings.
Ahmed's base hit in the fourth inning ended an 0-for-19 skid at the plate dating back to May 1. The shortstop's season batting average has dropped from .261 to .227 during that span, and while he's unlikely to become much of an asset in that area even with some better luck on balls in play, Ahmed at least remains playable in NL-only and very deep mixed leagues thanks to his power spike. He's on pace for his first double-digit homer campaign, with a career-high 41.5 percent flyball rate supporting the notion that Ahmed has adjusted his approach to sell out for more power.

May 9, 2018 11:54 am Diamondbacks' Steven Souza: Records two hits Tuesday by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Souza went 2-for-3 and a walk in the Diamondbacks' 8-5 win over the Dodgers on Tuesday in 12 innings.
The pair of base hits were Souza's first in a Diamondbacks uniform and ended a 0-for-10 skid at the plate heading into Tuesday. With strikeout rates higher than 29 percent in each of the past three seasons, Souza will likely remain a liability in the batting-average category all season, but he should rack up plenty of RBI chances if he continues to hit directly behind Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock.

May 9, 2018 11:49 am Diamondbacks' Chris Owings: Hits solo blast Tuesday by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Owings went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in the Diamondbacks' 8-5 win over the Dodgers on Tuesday in 12 innings.
Owings hit one of three long balls off Dodgers starter Rich Hill to stake the Diamondbacks to an early lead before Los Angeles chipped away at the deficit. Though he served as the No. 2 hitter Tuesday with a southpaw on the mound, Owings will likely be excluded from the lineup more frequently against right-handed pitching with outfielder Steven Souza (pectoral) returning from the disabled list last week and third baseman Jake Lamb (shoulder) set to do the same later this month.

May 9, 2018 5:26 am Diamondbacks' Brad Boxberger: Blows first save of year by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Boxberger gave up a game-tying home run in the ninth for a blown save Tuesday, striking out two and walking zero in the extra-innings affair.
Boxberger came on with a one-run lead, and after striking out Chase Utley, he served up a solo shot to Enrique Hernandez. It was the first blown save on the year for Boxberger, and the second home run he's surrendered through 16 innings. The right-hander maintains a solid 2.25 ERA and .217 batting average against, although the eight walks are slightly high. Boxberger's 11 saves are good for No. 3 in the majors.

May 9, 2018 5:23 am Diamondbacks' A.J. Pollock: Hits two-run homer Tuesday by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Pollack went 2-for-6 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's win over the Dodgers.
Pollack's home run -- his 11th of the year -- came off Dodgers' starter Rich Hill in the first inning. Pollack is hitting a fantastic .308/.361/.677 with 23 extra-base hits and 31 RBI. The 30-year-old is also 8-for-10 in stolen base attempts, and is proving to be a productive force in all major categories.

May 9, 2018 9:18 am Dodgers' Cody Bellinger: Collects two hits Tuesday by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Bellinger went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to Arizona.
It was Bellinger's eighth double of the season, putting him on pace to surpass the 26 he slapped last year. His power, however, has taken a step in the opposite direction. The phenom blasted 39 homers in 132 games last season, but he has just four through 32 contests in 2018. The main cause has been a combination of a lower fly ball rate (39.4 percent compared to 47.1 percent in 2017) and a drastic drop in HR/FB ratio (9.8 percent compared to 25.2 percent last season). Bellinger's medium and hard contact rates are on par with his breakout season, so the power figures to come around eventually, especially as we enter the warmer months of the campaign.

May 9, 2018 5:24 am Dodgers' Yasmani Grandal: Homers and drives in two by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Grandal went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a walk in Tuesday's loss to the Diamondbacks.
Grandal hit a solo home run in the third, and then had an RBI single in the fifth. The multi-hit affair came after a six-game hitless streak, but Grandal's slash line still sits at a favorable .280/.381/.505. The backstop's 23 RBI and 17 runs are both good for second place among MLB catchers, trailing only Gary Sanchez of the Yankees.

May 9, 2018 5:21 am Dodgers' Rich Hill: Allows five runs in no-decision by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Hill gave up five runs on seven hits in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, striking out five and walking two in four innings.
Hill allowed three home runs Tuesday, including two two-run shots. This was Hill's first start since April 14, and he threw a total of 79 pitches (45 for strikes). Hill is coming off a 2017 campaign in which he went 12-8 with a 3.32 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and had 166 strikeouts in 135.2 innings. It's been a rough start to 2018, and he'll look to get back in the win column in his next start against the Reds at home.

May 8, 2018 8:24 pm Dodgers' Justin Turner: Aiming to return next week against Miami by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Turner (wrist) is targeting a return during next week's series against the Marlins, which begins Tuesday, Pedro Moura of The Athletic Los Angeles reports.
Per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, Turner will take reps at the dish in a simulated game Wednesday. While it's likely that he'll head on a rehab assignment before coming off the disabled list, it appears likely that Turner will be ready to return by mid-May. Until he's in full health, look for Max Muncy and Kyle Farmer to share time at third base.

May 8, 2018 7:33 pm Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw: Avoids structural damage by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Manager Dave Roberts indicated Kershaw (biceps) underwent an MRI which revealed no structural damage, Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Kershaw could also begin playing catch at some point this week, but beyond that there remains no official timetable for his recovery. The Dodgers' ace seems likely to miss more than one turn in the rotation, but a clearer picture should come into focus once he resumes playing catch. Ross Stripling should continue in Los Angeles' starting rotation in the meantime.

May 9, 2018 6:49 pm Dodgers' Alex Verdugo: Sent back to minors by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Verdugo was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Verdugo will head back to the minors in order to clear a spot on the roster for Yasiel Puig (ankle), who was activated from the disabled list in a corresponding move. The top prospect was set to lose a good amount of playing time with Puig returning to action, so the Dodgers opted to send him back to the minors to get everyday at-bats with Oklahoma City. He hit a fine .265/.306/.382 across 37 plate appearances with the big club and should be back at some point this season.

Was hoping Verdugo would force the issue with the roster. But that AB in the 11th last night shows he still needs some work. He'll be back.
