At the peak of my interest in watching boxing, I rooted for Ernie Shavers, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and later on George Foreman. My favorite life stories of boxers that were before my time belonged to Joe Louis (my father was a big fan) and James (Cinderella Man) Braddock. In the lower weights, I liked Hagler, Hearns and Boom Boom Mancini. I remember Kenny Norton breaking Ali jaw in 73 which propelled his career to the front line. I gotta give George Foreman credit actually there were two versions George 1.0 the fit and trim one and 2.0 with the belly. Tommy Hearns vs Marvin Hagler what can you say about that, it was one of the greatest fights of all time "The Hitman" vs "The Marvelous One" that was a WAR I don't how Hagler came back especially after the 1st round catching Hearns vicious right. My personal Favorite Would be the Brown Bomber from Alabama, my Dad went to a lot of those fight back in the 30's and 40's Louis had the 'the bum of the month club' and with his hands of stone slow moving but had real quick with that left / right combo or, a double jab and right (it's Boom Boom out goes the lights). It was Germany vs America Joe Louis was on a roll until he met Max Schmeling, Schmeling and his trainer notice that Louis dropped his hands leaving himself open and Max went to work exploiting that for 11 rounds and in the 12 KO. Flash forward two years later (1938) when Schmeling met Louis again and well ..that wasn't a fight, as it was more akin to some taking a sledge hammer to another, and pounding the other person with it. Louis was all fist a punching machine and made Schmeling scream, and my Dad who was there in old Yankee Stadium that night said he had NEVER in his life, ever heard anyone scream like that as the shot paralyzed Schmeling and broke his ribs from there on is was game over and Joe Louis had redeemed himself against an upset loss two years earlier.

I'd say maybe even 3 versions of George Foreman. The flag waving Olympic champion caught my interest early on too. I still dig that he named ALL of his kids “George”. I wonder if he had a different “tone” he used when calling for them or did they just all come runnng and he’d then pick out the one he meant / wanted? GO DODGERS!!!

To me, boxing went down after the De LaHoya vs. Trinidad debacle. I still think Oscar won that fight although he should have kept the pressure on. After that, boxing just started to decline in my opinion. Some of the best fights in the 90's were the under cards to Julio Cesar Chavez. Guys like Azuma Nelson, Terrible Terry Norris, Gerald McClellan etc...

Great thread idea, Bklyn_LA. My favorite was Salvador Sanchez. I hated him when he beat Danny Little Red Lopez. I grew to love him when for some reason he was a prohibtive underdog vs. Wilfredo Gomez & beat the crap out of him. Then he had that epic fight against Azumah Nelson. He was losing badly until he timed Nelson. Then it became a pounding.
He died in a car crash down in Mexico at the tender age of 22.

Shout out to my fellow Irish-American, Sean O'Grady, for punishing Emanuel Steward's cookie-cutter boy, Hilmer Kenty.

Roberto Duran too for all the times he's overcome the odds. Losing to Hearns was all too predictable. I cleaned up on that fight. Hearns was just too tall, with too far a reach on his jab. But then Duran beat Davey Moore & Iran Barkley. I think this was one of Marvin Hagler's biggest flaws. He was too cautious. The reason the Hearns / Hagler fight turned into a brawl rests with Tommy. When he set his feet against a true middle-weight, I was like - "whaddya doin' Tommy!" He nailed Hagler straight on the skull. Marvin seemed stunned, but never in trouble. Tommy broke his hand. It was over at that point.

If I'm not mistaken, Gomez was very sick in critical condition a few years ago, don't know his condition since however... Sometimes, that's all it takes, look for that opening when they drop their hands then it's... Good night Irene...goodnite! Hmm...too young! When here stories of sports stars who parish in that manner I think of Roberto Clemente and the Rock from Brockton Rocky Marciano.... Roberto Duran, I don't know how I forgot him with those brick mitts of his. Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard 1 and 2 "no mas" and Hector Macho Camacho those were some brutal fights!

I haven't watched any fight maybe since Buster beat up Tyson. It was beautiful. Nowadays, with I guess UFC, it looks like you can kill a guy in a match. Kick 'em in the head. smh Going backwards.

Speaking of Bazookas, anyone else remember Bazooka Limon? He & Lupe Pintor were classic. Pintor fought Carlos Zarate & Wilfredo Gomez too. Limon fought Bobby Chacon several times. Bobby was all heart.
Eusebio Pedroza was quite possibly the dirtiest fighter I ever saw. What I'll hand him was his excellent conditioning. Rounds 13-15 truly were the championships rounds for him. He caught Juan Laporte on the ropes & was just raking him. Elbow after elbow. It was scandalous. Granted, Laporte was leaning into Pedroza & Pedroza wanted punching room. Still, I had seen him do this before in other fights. Barry McGuigan won a place in my heart forever by beating Pedroza.
It went on all fight. The announcers really started getting into it around the 44:00 minute mark.

With Laporte following Pedroza back to his corner at the end of the 14th wow. Then here come the 15th and which was all red=leather!!

Why I hated Howard Cosell.
What stunning turn of events? O'Grady dominated throughout. Why so surprised Kenty didn't move more? It's how Steward trained his fighters. When Hearns fought Leonard, & Ray landed a body blow to Tommy's rib cage somewhere roundabout the 6th round, I burst out laughing when Hearns got on his bicycle after that. Never been hurt that bad before, eh Tommy? RUN!!

Cosell is killing me, just a little off when he insisted that the first knockdown was caused by a right "to the belly" but it was to the chin, even after the replay clearly showed Kenty's chin. FUNNY! O'Grady every time I hear that name I think of that old Irish Folk song "My Wild Irish Heart" She’s the daughter of Rosie O’Grady, A regular old-fashioned girl.

Tex Cobb's gift to the sports world was Howard Cosell's retirement. After watching the mismatch with Larry Holmes, Cosell was so sickened by it he said he would never work another boxing match. Thanks, Randy.
