Anderson Nov 6, 2024 at 12:54 pm ET • 2 min read Scott Boras, Major League Baseball's most famous player agent, held his annual press availability on Wednesday morning at the league's general manager meetings in San Antonio, Texas. Boras addressed various topics, including the ongoing free agency of top clients like outfielder Juan Soto (formerly of the New York Yankees), third baseman Alex Bregman (Houston Astros), and first baseman Pete Alonso (New York Mets). Below, CBS Sports has compiled three takeaways from Boras' press availability, including some insight into what Soto is seeking from his next employer. 1. Soto prioritizing "winning" owner (and money) Soto, according to Boras, is yearning to sign with a team whose owner is committed to "winning." That doesn't mean the money is irrelevant; in fact, it can be safely assumed that one of the ways Soto and Boras will deem an owner fit (or unfit) is their willingness to pay him whatever the magic number ends up being. That isn't meant to be a cynical observation, either. We're all adults here. We can understand that athletes have limited career spans, and that it only makes sense for them to pursue the greatest payday made available to them. There's no moral or character failing (at least in our book) to acknowledge as much. 2. Bregman recovering from elbow surgery As for the aforementioned Bregman, he's currently recovering from elbow surgery to remove bone chips, Boras revealed Wednesday. That operation is not expected to impact him in any meaningful way heading forward. Bregman's name had been part of the news cycle already this week, with Astros general manager Dana Brown acknowledging that he would like to re-sign him. At the same time, Brown said the organization is reluctant to give out super long-term deals. It's to be determined if that predilection will end up causing a split between Bregman and the only franchise he's ever suited up for as a professional ballplayer. 3. Regrettable puns Boras is, in addition to being a skilled negotiator, a showman of sorts. It's become an annual tradition for him to address his clients' statuses with an unchecked (and occasionally unwelcomed) series of puns -- and for the attempted wordplay to then be quickly shared on social media, thereby allowing for his message to spread quicker, and perhaps more effectively, than if he had provided the same information sans flair. Roki Sasaki free agency: Why Dodgers are favorites for Japanese ace, and which teams may be in the running too The Chiba Lotte Marines announced Saturday that they will post Sasaki this winter By R.J. Anderson 9 hrs ago • 3 min read Over the weekend, the Chiba Lotte Marines of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league announced their intention to post right-hander Roki Sasaki for MLB consideration. (The posting system is essentially MLB's transfer portal with NPB and South Korea's KBO.) Sasaki, 23, has been an international sensation since he threw a 19-strikeout perfect game during the 2022 season. It's fair to describe him as the most talented pitcher not already employed by one MLB organization or another. Once Sasaki is posted, it stands to reason that every team will touch base with his camp. His earning potential will be greatly suppressed by his classification as an amateur free agent (due to his age and lack of service time). MLB teams will be able to offer him only as much as they have left in their international amateur signing bonus pools. Only two teams, the Dodgers and the Orioles, have more than $2 million in their 2024 coffers, according to the Associated Press. There is a potential catch here. The current international amateur signing period ends on Dec. 15, with a fresh cycle opening a month later. If Sasaki waits until Jan. 15 to sign, when every team has their full 2025 pool available, he will markedly increase his earning potential. Of course, if Sasaki cared solely about the bottom line, he would've waited until he was no longer classified as an amateur. At that point, Sasaki would've been able to sign a contract like the $325 million pact inked last winter by countryman and fellow right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Sasaki's willingness to forgo that scenario suggests he's being driven by other factors, much the way Shohei Ohtani was when he first came to the United States. In other words, the Dodgers are the pick for Sasaki if he wants to get paid as much as he can (this cycle anyway); win a ring; and/or become the best version of himself. On top of all that, the Dodgers employ Ohtani and Yamamoto, two of Sasaki's Team Japan teammates, and have shown a willingness to add the necessary support staff. (Be it Ippei Mizuhara, Ohtani's now-disgraced ex-interpreter, or Yamamoto's biomechanics guru Osamu Yada.) Only Sasaki knows how much any of this stuff matters, if at all. Patch it all together, though, and the Dodgers seem to cover every potential base in a way that makes them the aggregate favorite. Still, for the sake of making things interesting, we figured it would be worthwhile to highlight a few other teams who would seem to have better than even odds at wooing Sasaki over the coming weeks. Let us make the brief case for these three teams, presented her in no particular order: Baltimore Orioles: The other team with more than $2 million to spend this cycle. The O's have an impressive young core and an obvious need for more impact arms. Baltimore is also, correctly, known for its player development acumen. New York Yankees: In addition to having the third-most money to offer this cycle, the Yankees have one obvious factor working in their favor: they're the Yankees. Few other franchises can make the prestige and global brand value. San Diego Padres: This one comes with a caveat: the Padres have just over $2,000 remaining in this cycle's pool, making them a non-factor unless this pushes into January. Should that come to fruition, well, you can never discount A.J. Preller's willingness to make a bold move -- in this instance, perhaps finding a way to add additional bonus pool money through trades. The Major League Baseball offseason is in the period where basically every free agent is still available and any possible trade is still on the table. We've only seen slight foundation-laying with the qualifying offer deadline, Thanksgiving week and the Winter Meetings still on tap.
That means rumors will be of the cast-a-wide-net variety and fans can dare to dream.
Speaking of, let's get to it ...
Soto market expanding past where we thought?
The initial listing of teams that would realistically be in on Juan Soto wasn't very deep. The two New York teams and maybe the Dodgers, especially if they wanted to drive the price up on their final two 2024 opponents. That felt like the extent of it and it's possible those are the three legitimate bidders once the dust is settled. Still, we're getting more names now.
The Blue Jays and Red Sox are in on Soto, according to ESPN. Let's not forget the Blue Jays were heavy on Shohei Ohtani. They have the deep pockets necessary. The New York Post also reports that the Blue Jays could be a "spoiler" in the Soto bidding as the New York teams both go heavy on him.
The Post's Jon Heyman reports there are eight clubs in on Soto: Yankees, Mets, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Giants, Red Sox and two mystery teams. It's always possible the mystery team angle is floated from the agent side in an attempt to increase offers from the bidders, of course.
Don't forget about Teoscar
The next-biggest name on the free-agent, corner-outfield market after Soto is Teoscar Hernández, who is coming off a career year for the World Series champion Dodgers. He hit .272 with a 137 OPS+, 33 homers, 99 RBI and 4.3 WAR in the regular season. He also went 7 for 20 (.350) with a double, home run and four RBI in the five-game World Series.
The Dodgers are the favorite to bring him back, and he has publicly expressed a desire to make that happen, but it'll be a robust market, especially for teams worried they'll miss out on Soto. Jeff Passan of ESPN mentions the Dodgers (obviously), Red Sox, Orioles and Yankees. In the case of the Yankees, that's only if they miss out on Soto, but that might be a tough needle to thread. It's possible Hernández signs before Soto, after all.
Orioles, Giants on Burnes?
The Orioles have the financial might to retain free-agent starter Corbin Burnes, despite what has been floated publicly from the front office in the recent past -- especially now that they have been drawing good attendance and have a new owner who is ready to spend for a winner. The ace went 15-9 with a 2.92 ERA in the regular season and did his job in his one playoff start, a 1-0 loss.
Obviously, the Orioles won't be the only bidder, of course, and the Mets should be considered a threat for any free-agent starter this offseason. Passan also connects the Giants as a serious threat here, too.
Angels ink d'Arnaud
The Angels have reached a two-year agreement worth $12 million with free-agent catcher Travis d'Arnaud, according to MLB.com.
d'Arnaud, 35, had his option declined earlier this winter by the Braves. Over the last three seasons, he's batted .246/.305/.440 (103 OPS+) with an average of 15 home runs and 18 doubles.
d'Arnaud figures to serve as Logan O'Hoppe's backup.

This sounds crazy. But I would still put out a feeler on Mike Trout. Moreno has dug a hole he can't possibly ever hope to climb out of without getting rid of Mike. (He's gotten a backup catcher so far. Must have thrilled Trout.). Mike's owed over $220,000,000 for the next six years. He's 33. He had ten homeruns in 29 games last year. I wouldn't pay more than 15 million per for that gamble. Which is $90,000,000 total. Meaning Moreno would have to kick in $130,000,000. But he would be saving $90,000,000. Take it or leave it.
With that kind of potential offense, you wouldn't have to spend half a billion dollars on Soto. We beat the Yankees this year & they had Soto. Put Trout in right. That's being vacated by Betts' anticipated move to second base. If Shohei is pitching again, then he's not playing a position. You get a great clubhouse guy with Trout. Future Hall of Famer. Can they restructure his contract to defer money? They can't make him take less. But can they defer?

The Silver Slugger Awards are determined by a vote amongst managers and coaches, with each team receiving four ballots in all (the manager plus three coaches of the team's choosing). The aim is to highlight and reward the best hitter at every position based on statistical analysis and general observation. Both leagues boast 10 winners, including a DH and a utility slot for players who may not fit neatly into a single defensive position.

Angels' Anthony Rendon: Won't be handed starting job Rotowire Nov 11, 2024 Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Monday on Foul Territory TV that Rendon will have to "show us he can still play and earn the right to play every day" next season. When healthy, Rendon was employed as an everyday player in 2024, ultimately playing just 56 games while making three different trips to the injured list. However, he slashed only .218/.307/.267 with no home runs and it does not sound like a starting job will be handed to him heading into the 2025 campaign. As things stand right now, Rendon would appear tentatively penciled in as the Angels' starting third baseman. Those comments suggest his bosses aren't buying this is injury related.

Look out, Decoy ... the Freemans have a new kitten named Champ November 11th, 2024 Scott Chiusano Look out, Decoy ... there's a new Dodger pet in town, and this time his name is no secret. Freddie Freeman and his family kept the good times rolling by adopting a kitten three days after the Dodgers captured the 2024 World Series title. Fittingly, the feline is named Champ. According to an Instagram post from Freddie's wife, Chelsea, it was 8-year-old Charlie who woke his dad up from a nap a few days after the World Series ended and asked if they could get a cat. The Freemans ended up adopting from The Stray Cat Alliance, a Los Angeles-based non-profit. http://instagram.com/p/DCNlasNSSEC "When you take a nap and wake up to a new cat 🙃," Freddie posted on Instagram, redefining the phrase cat nap. Champ has a ways to go to match Shohei Ohtani's dog Decoy in celebrity. "I figured it would be hard for American people to pronounce it," Ohtani said at the time of Decoy's Japanese name, Dekopin. But there's no misinterpreting Champ Freeman's name. SO hot!!! And that’s a damn fine looking kitty they adopted, too. It’ll never top Decoy’s first pitch - let’s face it - cats are just not interested and / or trainable for such a task. And I don’t know of too many domestic cats that could pick up, hold and deliver a baseball from the mound to home plate. It might be able to whap / smack the ball and roll it toward the plate, but that’d be a long shot at best. Still a good looking kitty! GO DODGERS!!! |

He proved to be a crucial run producer for the Dodgers throughout 2024. He hit .272/.340/.501 with 33 home runs, 99 RBI and 84 runs scored in 652 plate appearances. This performance also led to Hernández being named an All-Star for the second time in his career. Things worked out so well that the front office is also prioritizing a reunion.
"Teo obviously meant a ton to this team," Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said, via MLB.com. "You saw what was on the field but his impact in the clubhouse, the way he mentored younger guys, he's a special guy on and off the field. "We'll continue to have conversations with Teo. We love him, he knows that. He's a big part of what we did this year, so we'll keep talking and see how things play out."
Hernández re-signing with the Dodgers appears to be the most likely scenario right now. Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly is predicting both sides will eventually agree on a three-year, $54 million deal.
That would be slightly below his market value projection, which Spotrac has at three years and $71 million. If Hernández welcomes a bidding war between multiple teams, he could surpass that total compensation. However, if he mostly cares about staying with the Dodgers, it's possible they could sign the 32-year-old at a slight discount.
