Yasiel Puig Says He Didn’t Work Hard For Dodgers The Past Couple Years Posted by Clint Evans | Feb 19, 2019 Yasiel Puig has a very headline grabbing quote for all of you in Dodger-land. Moreover, Puig talked to Cincinnati.com about the state of his next contract. While Puig was candid in what he wants in the future – he spoke to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer about the past. Of course, that past extends into his days as a Los Angeles Dodger. In this case, Puig talked about the work ethic of his recent past. “The last couple of years, I didn’t work hard because I still have a contract to go,” Puig said. “Now, I think work harder than any year of my life.”
Ouch. This is the ex-girlfriend you were in love with telling you not only that it’s over. No, she’s not just saying to let her go. She’s telling you that she never loved you. And she’s talking about her new guy! More Puig, for all of you that haven’t had enough. “If I can sign here, you say?” Puig said. “I don’t know. You been asking the GM if he wants to sign me? If he gives me the money I want, (and) I’m going to be here all the years he wants. I love Ohio. This is my color. I love red.” This is especially tough for a fellow like myself. A fellow that wrote this emotional piece on the final days of the Wild Horse. I wore my emotions on my sleeve – as Puig wears his now (a red sleeve). It’s uncouth of the former Los Angeles icon to say he didn’t work hard, and it came down to money. Still, I want to choose to believe that this is simply Puig being scorned or just making headlines like only Puig knows how. My God, what an idiot he is. He's just told any potential suitor that if he already has a contract he has no motivation to work. He could have gone to arbitration too. He knew he might lose, so he opted to just roll with the original deal. Good riddance.

@jeffpassan BREAKING: Free agent star Manny Machado has agreed to a deal with the San Diego Padres, league sources tell ESPN. Someone just told me it was for $300,000,000. I need to check that out. If so, it's AJ Preller at his finest. What happened to the Yankees?

Machado to Padres on record deal, sources say 10-year, $300 million agreement is largest free-agent pact in American sports history By AJ Cassavell MLB.com @ajcassavell 1:54 PM EST PEORIA, Ariz. -- Free-agent infielder Manny Machado has agreed to a deal with the Padres, sources have told MLB.com. The agreement is for a record $300 million over 10 years, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand confirmed. The deal, which is pending a physical and includes an opt out after the fifth year, will be the biggest free-agent contract in the history of American sports, surpassing the 10-year, $275 million deal that Alex Rodriguez signed in December 2007. (What about Giancarlo Stanton?) Despite multiple reports of an agreement, Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler said, "We do not have a deal. We are continuing discussions." San Diego was in dire need of a middle-of-the-order bat, and Machado clearly provides that thump. He batted .297/.367/.538 with 37 homers last season. The Padres haven't had a hitter with 30-plus homers and a .900 OPS since Adrian Gonzalez in 2010. Machado also fills the biggest area of long-term need. The rest of the Padres' young starting lineup is under team control for the next four seasons. Third base was the most pressing question mark. As things stand, though, it's possible Machado opens the season at shortstop -- also an area of need, as top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr. isn't expected to arrive in the Majors until at least a few weeks into the season. The Padres have been adamant about Tatis being their long-term shortstop, meaning that Machado, who spent his first six seasons at third before shifting to short last year, is likely bound for the hot corner once again. www.mlb.com/news/manny-machado-deal-with-padres/c-304157722

It seems like the Pads are taking advantage of being the only major market team in the area now that the Chargers are gone. Let's see how long it lasts. "Johnny Hustle" will probably be traded to the Yankees in a few years.

I knew a guy who served in the navy. He was born in Norwalk & moved to San Diego after his stint in the military. Lot of former military personnel in San Diego. Lot of recent immigrants too. There's a reason the Clippers & Chargers are playing in LA now. Whenever I go to a Dodger game in San Diego there's a sea of Dodger caps. Got one old coot that was bitter about that dynamic. We had a pretty fun dialogue at one baseball game. I like talking trash with people who can take as well as dish. But the Padres can be the only game in town & their fans still suck.

Isn't Petco Park where home runs go to die? Wonder how many HR Manny would hit in Philadelphia vs. San Diego. Padres to Move Petco’s Outfield Fences Tuesday, October 23, 2012 he O’Malley ownership team, which acquired the San Diego Padres from John Moores in August for $800 million, followed through with discussed plans to move in the fences at Petco Park. The team said it will move in the outfield fences in right, right center and left center field in a project that will also relocate the visitors’ bullpen from inside the right field foul line to above the Padres’ bullpen in center field. Presumably, this will help the home team to hit more home runs, but the visiting teams get to use the same dimensions when they bat so the changes will probably result in a wash. Most likely, games at Petco will average a higher number of runs, and pitchers won’t be as happy. Padres Chairman Ron Fowler said the intent was to change Petco Park from “being the most run suppressing ballpark in Major League Baseball.” “After an extensive study, it became clear to all of us that some change was needed,” Fowler said. The two largest changes are in left center field, where the fence will move 12 feet to 390 feet from home plate, and at the right center field gap that will move in 11 feet to 391 feet from home. The Seattle Mariners, another run-starved team, also announced moving in the outfield fences at Safeco Field.

Yes, I remember they did move the fences, but I see from a 2018 Union Tribune article that a new video board and two new tall buildings may have further helped the ball carry. The article said Petco was 14th in home runs, as of last June. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/chargers/sd-sp-padres-mlb-petco-park-homers-20180607-story.htmlSo Petco is better than it was for long ball. Will have to assume that Manny has weighed the ballpark analytics of Petco vs. other possible suitors' ballparks.

Doubt he makes it to his opt out year before hitting the trade market. GO DODGERS!!!

I know he wasn’t too happy about platooning and sitting against lefties, but to come out and BLATANTLY aver that his efforts in 2018 weren’t all they could have been - that’s not only stupid but also a HUGE insult to his team, management, ownership and his fans. I’ll keep his signed bat hanging with the rest of my memorabilia because I went through hell and the Reds gestapo ushers getting his autograph, but he lost me as a fan and I won’t root for him to do well. Wonder if Panic or Sue has seen this? Guessing one of them is on a ledge somewhere; the other is probably planning her annual geriatric tour with the Moody’s. GO DODGERS!!!

Just knucklehead stuff like this. I’m truly beginning to think he might be slightly retar-, sorry - mentalily challenged. Maybe Castro clunked him on the head a few times before he escaped. While I think we all know a good deal of players “save their best” for contract years, what kind of idiot do you have to be to come right out and say it in front of the media? Granted - Cincinnati isn’t LA - not even close. But that statement is SURE to get the attention of any potential suitors next year and should cost him dearly. I hope he tanks BIG TIME and ends up someplace even crapier than Cincy. GO DODGERS!!!
