This falls under the heading of - "Well, it isn't my money."
Should the Yankees go all-in on this year's free-agent class?
Nov. 19: By their lofty "World Series or bust" standards, the Yankees haven't had much success recently. New York hasn't hoisted the Commissioner's Trophy since 2009, and even the Orioles have won the American League East more recently than the Yanks.
ESPN's David Schoenfield thinks Yankees owners Hal and Hank Steinbrenner need to "summon the spirit of their father and go big, ignore the luxury tax, do whatever it takes," and that means going all-in on this year's free-agent class.
Schoenfield thinks the Yanks should trade for Mariners southpaw James Paxton to join Corbin in their revamped rotation, noting that Paxton is projected to earn roughly the same amount as Sonny Gray in arbitration. New York can trade Gray and add Paxton without impacting the payroll.
Move No. 4 in Schoenfield's plan is to sign Daniel Murphy to start at first base and fill in at second, replacing the Greg Bird/Neil Walker combination. The Yankees gave more than 700 combined plate appearances to Bird and Walker in 2018, and both posted sub-.675 OPS marks. Schoenfield argues the lefty-swinging Murphy would be a great fit at Yankee Stadium, and points out that the veteran's contact-heavy approach would help to balance New York's strikeout-prone lineup some.
To cap it all off, Schoenfield has signing Bryce Harper as Move No. 5 for New York. In this scenario, Brett Gardner would become the fourth outfielder, with Giancarlo Stanton remaining the club's primary designated hitter.
For the Yankees to pull this off, the Steinbrenners would need to be willing to exceed the $206 million luxury-tax threshold by a significant margin, which isn't out of the question. Before staying under the threshold in 2018, New York paid the tax in every year from 2003, when the system was put in place, to 2017.

Maybe they can trade Gray for Paxton. www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grayso01.shtmlwww.baseball-reference.com/players/p/paxtoja01.shtmlWhy have Gleyber Torres fill in at shortstop & sign an adequate role player to man second (Didi Gregorius is expected back by the All-Star break) when you can waste 300 million dollars on a player who admits he doesn't always hustle? Torres only finished third in Rookie of the Year balloting. www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/torregl01.shtmlwww.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gregodi01.shtml10/17/2018 by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Yankees' Didi Gregorius: Undergoes Tommy John procedure Didi Gregorius underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Wednesday. He is expected to be back in action before the 2019 All-Star break, Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports reports.According to the club, his procedure went "as expected," so hope remains that Gregorius will be able to return to action around the midway point of next season. In 134 regular-season games this year, Gregorius slashed .268/.335/.494 with 27 home runs, 86 RBI and 10 stolen bases. But they can always move Machado to third base upon Didi's return... www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/andujmi01.shtmlAfter all that hilarity I wondered what happened to Harper. Sure enough Schoenfield had that as the crowning move. Some of these sportswriters are borderline brain damaged.

I've just been reading some more of this guy's stuff. Part of me wants to answer & tell him I don't think most people get your satire.
So the Yankees got burned on Alex Rodriquez's second contract. They got burned on C.C. Sabathia's second contract. They already have one 300 million dollar player in Giancarlo Stanton. Lord knows what Aaron Judge gets when his time arrives. Luis Severino too.
Schoenfield's escape for the Steinbrenners (if overhead just becomes too much) is they have a lot of equity in the team & can cash it in by selling out. Maybe they don't want to. Maybe they'll listen to their experts instead of some delusional sports hack.
'He's challenging us Hank! Aren't you tired of being compared to Dad? Let's show him what we can do. Brian (Cashman) - go get us Machado AND Harper!!'

kwese.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/25319759/bryce-manny-corbin-more-yankees-spending-spree-bring 'That leaves Gregorius without a position when he returns. The Yankees can let all that sort itself when he comes back. They also could nontender him -- he's due about $13 million in arbitration -- although it's unlikely Machado would sign before the Nov. 30 nontender date. Still, if the Yankees want to save $13 million and are convinced they can land Machado, they may let Gregorius go (he's a free agent after 2019 anyway).' Duh, do you non-tender Gregorius first? Because that kills off all your leverage with Machado. 'Move No. 4: Sign Daniel Murphy. The Yankees gave 311 plate appearances to Greg Bird in 2018 and he hit .199 with a .672 OPS. They also gave 398 PAs to Neil Walker and he hit .219 with a .664 OPS. That's essentially a full-time player that added up to a whole lot of nothing. It's time to move on from Bird -- maybe he's part of the Paxton trade -- and Murphy is a perfect fit at first base, a left-handed bat who doesn't strike out much, can pull the ball to right field for some cheap Yankee Stadium home runs and fill in at second base.' www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/voitlu01.shtml'This wouldn't be overpaying Alex Rodriguez for the decline phase of his career or shelling out for an overrated Jacoby Ellsbury (by the way, he's still around, but we'll pretend he's not).' How convenient. 'Tickets to Yankee Stadium would suddenly be hotter than "Hamilton." www.espn.com/mlb/attendanceYankee Stadium Capacity: Baseball: 47,309 (2018–present) 'Bench: Gardner, Austin Romine, Ronald Torreyes (and Gregorius when he returns)' Bench Gregorius. 'Could all this actually happen? Sure, if the Yankees are willing to soar past the $206 million tax threshold. Hey, they had a $244 million payroll a couple of years ago. Plus, know that the Steinbrenner-led group that purchased the franchise in 1973 paid just $8.8 million for the franchise. It's now worth an estimated $4 billion, according to Forbes. Hal and Hank are sitting on billions if they ever want to sell the franchise. So they can afford a little tax even if that eats into their annual operating profit.' No comment needed for that...

No wonder some of their field level seats are four figures plus per game. Saw quite a few of them empty for that wild card series this year, too. Guess even richey rich New Yorkers can’t drop five large for a night of baseball at the NEW Yankee Stadium.
GO DODGERS!!!

Since the Mariners are on full trade mode we should really look into Jean Segura. I am thinking Matty and some money and a couple of guys or no money and some guys. That dude would immediately solidify 2nd base and be a good leadoff batter for a few years. Enough of the platoon crap with Kike and company.

Right they take on the Kemp money and we send a couple of guys like Joc/Puig etc. I don't think that gets it done. Segura is 28 & will be 29 just before opening day. He's making about 14 million dollars a year through 2021. Something like that. Frankly, I think Puig is already overpaid. He'll get more though. So will Joc if he can prove last season's improvement was for real. Bulldog is right in that the Dodgers would have to build an offer around major league ready prospects. I wouldn't give them Lux.

No I dont know anymore about Hunter then you do. I pissed HA off. He wanted me to do something I wasn't comfortable with. Simultaneously someone else (since removed) was pushing for disciplinary action against him. I vacillated because Ray hadn't told me I was in charge. He was busy with other things. I tried apologizing to HA. He hasn't posted since. I really miss him. He was one of the most reasonable & knowledgeable posters we had.

How do you take this? Considering the source it's confusing.
A-Rod on Machado: 'A fine young man'
MLB.com 4:19 PM EST
Manny Machado has been one of the game's best players since debuting in 2012, and he is set to cash in as a first-time free agent this offseason.
Below, you will find a list of the latest news and rumors surrounding the infielder.
A-Rod touts Machado as 'a great player' and 'a fine young man'
Nov. 20: Alex Rodriguez has acted as a mentor to Manny Machado since Machado was a teenager in Miami -- where both Rodriguez and Machado grew up -- and he still holds a role as an advisor for the Yankees organization, leading some to wonder whether A-Rod could help bring Machado to New York.
Rodriguez, who was in London on Monday as part of MLB's promotional tour for next year's series between the Yankees and the Red Sox at London Stadium, said he hasn't been approached by the Yanks or Machado. But Rodriguez did endorse Machado's talent and character, according to the New York Post.
"I haven't had a chance to talk to [owner] Hal [Steinbrenner] or [GM Brian] Cashman, but I know ownership is as hungry as ever to put a great product and winner on the field," Rodriguez said. "And he's a great player.
"No one has asked me for advice. I do wish Manny well. He's a fine young man. It's a fun part of his career. I would just tell him to eliminate the white noise and focus on the game."
Machado drew criticism in October for admitting in an interview with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required) that he wasn't a "Johnny Hustle" type of player, and he was also called a "dirty player" by Christian Yelich of the Brewers after spiking first baseman Jesus Aguilar during the NLCS. The debate about Machado has continued this month, with the infielder expected to command more than $300 million on the free-agent market.
The Athletic's Jayson Stark reported last week that the Yankees were doing "extensive" background work on Machado to determine if he's the right fit for the left side of their infield.
"Any time you're going after a player, due diligence is a part of it," Rodriguez said. "He's a great player and he's young and has played well in the AL East. But Hal and Cashman would be right to do a deep dive on any player, whether it's someone making the minimum [salary] or if it's a big free agent like Manny."

Who will fill role of catcher for Dodgers in 2019?
LA has many prospects, but no clear front-runner for next season
By Ken Gurnick MLB.com @kengurnick
Nov. 19th, 2018
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers might have the deepest group of catching prospects in baseball, but the shallowest depth chart at the position on the 40-man roster.
Austin Barnes, Rocky Gale and Kyle Farmer are the incumbents. Yasmani Grandal is a free agent looking for multi-year riches and the Dodgers don't need to make that kind of commitment with Will Smith, Keibert Ruiz, Connor Wong and Diego Cartaya comprising the pipeline of backstops making their way through the team's system.
But none has the experience to be a Major League starter by Opening Day. So, the Dodgers need a veteran one-year bridge, and it's likely to come from a group of usual suspects that was reduced by one on Monday when Kurt Suzuki signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Nationals.
That contract sets a market price for 32-year-old Martin Maldonado, who checks off the pitch-framer box that Dodgers management values so highly. In 2018, Grandal was the best at the skill according to Baseball Prospectus, with Maldonado ranked 18th in the game. For what it's worth, Barnes ranked 15th. J.T. Realmuto, the Miami catcher reportedly on the trade block, ranked 54th. Suzuki was 105th.
The list of free-agent catchers includes Wilson Ramos, Jonathan Lucroy, Robinson Chirinos, Nick Hundley, Brian McCann, Matt Wieters and A.J. Ellis. Despite his defensive lapses, Grandal is likely to get the multi-year deal he seeks because he combines 24-homer power with the pitch framing.
Barnes, after winning the starting role late in the 2017 season, then losing it back to Grandal in Spring Training of 2018, went on to have a dreadful season offensively, then became the starter again in the postseason when Grandal had a defensive collapse.
Barnes had an .895 OPS in 2017, but only .619 in '18. He threw out 22 percent of potential basestealers, compared to Grandal's 28 percent.
In September, after the Triple-A Oklahoma City season ended, the Dodgers gave an unofficial promotion to the 23-year-old Smith, even though he wasn't on the 40-man roster and wasn't eligible to play. Smith was a first-round Draft pick in 2016.
"He is someone we're extremely high on. We feel there's real potential at bat and behind the plate. We really like the way his mind works," Andrew Friedman, president of baseball operations, said at the recent General Managers Meetings. "Bringing him up here in September, giving him the chance to be around the guys, catch bullpens, go about the advance process in a way that you're not caught up in the pressure of going out that night and be able to sit and watch it play out and review it the next day, we feel like it will really benefit him. He's in a really good position to help us at some point next year."
The 20-year-old Ruiz is ranked No. 2 among Dodgers prospects by MLB Pipeline and has the most upside, but has yet to advance beyond Double-A.
