Not that I wish injury on anyone, although Bumgarner tests that credo. It's just mildly amusing with all the money they've spent trying to catch up with us.

Giants' Will Smith: Lands on 10-day DL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Smith (elbow) was placed on the 10-day disabled list.
This was a forgone conclusion. Smith is on track for a return on May 1, and he may join a shorthanded bullpen, as closer Mark Melancon hit the DL with a flexor strain in his throwing elbow. That said, Sam Dyson, Hunter Strickland and Tony Watson figure to be ahead of Smith in the pecking order for saves if Melancon's injury leads to an extended absence.

Giants' Julian Fernandez: Lands on 60-day DL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Fernandez (elbow) was placed on the 60-day DL on Thursday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
He was already on the 10-day DL with a UCL sprain, but the Giants moved him to the 60-day DL to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Gregor Blanco. Fernandez is in danger of missing all of the 2018 season if Tommy John surgery is needed.

Giants' Mark Melancon: Lands on 10-day DL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Melancon (elbow) will open the year on the 10-day DL, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
The Giants are calling Melancon's injury a right elbow flexor strain, which is not good at all, as it's the type of injury that could cost the Giants' closer significant time, and may even require another surgery. Sam Dyson seems like the best bet to get saves initially, as he was a competent fill-in for Melancon last year. Hunter Strickland would be the option with more fantasy upside, but he is unproven in such a role. Consider Melancon out indefinitely.

Giants' Jeff Samardzija: Placed on 10-day DL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Samardzija (pectoral) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
As expected, Samardzija will open the season on the disabled list after suffering a strained pectoral last week. The veteran hurler is currently expected to be sidelined for three-to-four weeks, so the Giants will do their best to stay afloat in the competitive N.L. West while both he and Madison Bumgarner (hand) begin their seasons on the disabled list.

Giants' Madison Bumgarner: Officially hits DL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Bumgarner (hand) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
This move comes as no surprise, as Bumgarner is expected to be sidelined for up to 6-to-8 weeks with a fractured left hand. It's too early in the recovery process to determine if he'll fall closer to the six- or eight-week timeframe, but those estimates should begin to come into focus once Bumgarner is able to begin his throwing program.

Oh wow. Didn't know about Melancon. The Giants are turning into an overpriced MASH unit. Funny, their fans always made fun of the Dodgers for that.

Every little ding, or major dent, to Buttgrabber puts a big smile on my face. Despise the guy and am always glad when he hits the DL.

March 29, 2018 5:25 pm Giants' Mark Melancon: Could return around mid-April by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Manager Bruce Bochy (elbow) said that he thinks it's realistic that Melancon can be ready to go "within a couple weeks," Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. Melancon was officially placed on the 10-day DL with a right elbow flexor strain prior to Thursday's Opening Day contest against the Dodgers. Though Bochy appeared hopeful, he admitted that it will be difficult to pin down a clear timetable until the right-hander resumes throwing. In his absence, Hunter Strickland will temporarily work the ninth-inning role.

April 4, 2018 11:31 pm Giants' Johnny Cueto: Tweaks ankle Wednesday by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Manager Bruce Bochy said Cueto tweaked his ankle during Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic Bay Area reports. Cueto suffered the injury while fielding a Dee Gordon bunt in the third inning. Despite limping a bit afterwards, Cueto was allowed to stay in the game after talking with the team's trainer and throwing a few successful warmup pitches. He ended up lasting six innings and picking up the win, though he was far from dominant. Cueto's status for his next start, which is scheduled for Monday against the Diamondbacks, should clear up once he's further evaluated in the coming days.

April 10, 2018 9:11 pm Giants' Steven Okert: Called up by Giants by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Okert was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Chris Haft of MLB.com reports. The lefty will be available out of the bullpen Tuesday as he takes the roster spot of Johnny Cueto, who was placed on the DL with an ankle sprain. Okert started the year down at Triple-A and has made two appearances at Sacramento, notching six strikeouts over 2.1 scoreless innings. It could be a short stint for him, however, as the Giants need to add a starter to take Cueto's place in the rotation on Wednesday. Share: Twitter Facebook
April 10, 2018 8:27 pm Giants' Mark Melancon: Still not throwing by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Melancon (elbow) has yet to resume throwing, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The closer's potential mid-April return seems to be off the table with Tuesday's news that he's still not throwing. Melancon has been on the shelf since the start of the season with a flexor strain in his pitching elbow. Hunter Strickland has been excellent in the closer's role to start the year and figures to remain in that position while Melancon is sidelined. Share: Twitter Facebook
April 9, 2018 8:00 pm Giants' Will Smith: Throws in extended spring training game by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Smith (elbow) threw 13 pitches in an extended spring training game Monday, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Smith is targeting a May 1 return, as the southpaw has been rehabbing his elbow after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March of 2017. Barring any setbacks, an early May activation from the DL looks to be obtainable, although the Giants will likely continue being cautious with him.

All good things must end. The Giants are starting to get healthy. At least for now.
BUT we still have 6'-4" 235 lb Brandon Belt with a .375 SLG%. Evan Longoria batting .204. Hunter Pence at .200. Andrew McCutchen at .203. Johnny Cueto takes the hill for them tonight. Lucky or not, Jeff Samardzija should be ready this week.

April 28, 2018 2:25 pm Giants' Mark Melancon: Transferred to 60-day DL by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Melancon (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Saturday.
Melancon was removed from the 40-man roster in order to make room for Alen Hanson. He'll now be ineligible to return before May 25. The veteran closer recently resumed baseball activities while rehabbing his elbow strain, but he's apparently still a month away from being ready to go. Hunter Strickland remains the Giants' closer in his absence.

May 8, 2018 1:38 am Giants' Jeff Samardzija: Allows five runs in loss to Phillies by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Samardzija (1-2) allowed five runs on four hits and three walks across four innings while taking the loss Monday against the Phillies. He struck out three.
Samardzija's outing wasn't his worst, but he fell victim to a pair of painful long balls, including a three run home run fro Odubel Herrera in the first inning and a two-run shot from Cesar Hernandez in the fourth. He labored at times and required 90 pitches to complete four innings before he was pulled prior to the fifth. It's been a poor start to the season for Samardzija, who's gone four or fewer innings while allowing five or more runs in two of his last three. He'll take a 6.62 ERA into Saturday's matchup with the Pirates.

May 8, 2018 12:11 am Giants' Mac Williamson: Shifted to 10-day DL by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Williamson (concussion) was transferred to the 10-day disabled list Monday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Williamson was taken off the 7-day disabled list after missing nearly two weeks due to concussion symptoms. He's set to visit a concussion specialist in the near future, although there is no set timetable for his return just yet.

May 7, 2018 5:53 pm Giants' Hunter Pence: Experiences setback in rehab assignment by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Pence will back off his rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento after experiencing recurring thumb soreness, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
This is bad news, as the veteran had already logged seven games with the River Cats and appeared to be relatively close to returning. Pence now seems to be a ways away from a full return to action. A return timetable should become clearer once he's able to resume his rehab assignment.

May 7, 2018 1:34 pm Giants' Johnny Cueto: Out six weeks with elbow sprain by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Cueto was diagnosed with a sprained right elbow and is expected to miss at least six weeks, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports.
Given the circumstances, this news comes as a relief to Cueto, who landed on the disabled list last week with right elbow inflammation. It was initially feared that he might require Tommy John surgery after seeking a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, but Dr. Andrews confirmed that Cueto is dealing with a sprain rather than a significant tear, so he'll opt to rest before beginning his rehab with the hope of avoiding surgery. Barring any setbacks, the 32-year-old could be back in the fold sometime during the first half of June; though seeing as surgery is still an option if his elbow doesn't respond as well as expected to the non-surgical route, the Giants will proceed cautiously with him. In the meantime, Andrew Suarez should continue to fill in for the right-hander in the rotation. Cueto held an impressive 0.84 ERA across five starts (32 innings) before landing on the shelf.

May 11, 2018 6:51 pm Giants' Hunter Pence: Resumes rehab assignment by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Pence (thumb) has resumed his rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Pence suffered a setback earlier this week during his initial rehab assignment, but it appears as though the soreness in his thumb has subsided with a few more days off. Expect to see Pence participate in a couple more minor-league outings before the Giants decide to reinstate the outfield from the 10-day DL.

May 11, 2018 5:37 pm Giants' Mac Williamson: At least 7-10 days away from activation by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Williamson (concussion) is still 7-to-10 days from being cleared to return to game action, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
He is still in the concussion protocol, but the Giants have no immediate plans to add another outfielder. Manager Bruce Bochy said Williamson still has some exercises he needs to do, per the recommendation of doctors, before he comes off the disabled list. Williamson should not be forgotten about, as he has the type of power the Giants are craving in left field, and was off to a good start before suffering the concussion. Look for a late-May return.

May 10, 2018 11:49 am Giants' Madison Bumgarner: Will throw bullpen next week by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Manager Bruce Bochy said Bumgarner (hand) will toss a bullpen session next week and could embark on a rehab assignment shortly after , Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Bumgarner was able to play catch Friday, which marked the first time he threw the ball around since suffering a fractured left hand in late March. There should be another update on his status following next week's bullpen session as a clearer picture comes into view regarding his anticipated return near the end of May.

May 10, 2018 11:29 am Giants' Johnny Cueto: Transferred to 60-day DL by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Cueto (elbow) was moved to the 60-day disabled list Thursday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Cueto's initial timetable after suffering a sprained right elbow was set at 6-to-8 weeks, though it's now guaranteed that he will be out until June 29, at the earliest. The 32-year-old went down with this injury following his start against the Dodgers on April 28, which happened to be his first outing all year where Cueto gave up multiple runs. Keep an eye on this situation as a surgical procedure is still on the table in the event his elbow doesn't respond to rehab. In a corresponding move, the Giants promoted Jose Valdez from Triple-A Sacramento.

May 17, 2018 8:44 pm Giants' Hunter Pence: Attempting to tweak swing by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Pence (thumb) visited with hitting specialist Doug Latta recently to work on changing his swing, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Pence's unorthodox hitting mechanics have been a trademark of his career, but at 35 years old, he's looking for a fresh start, and he picked someone with recent success to help. Latta was the brains behind Justin Turner's uppercut-like swing. Pence's teammate Mac Williamson also embraced Latta's advice on achieving a better launch angle and was raking before he landed on the disabled list. This revision may prompt the Giants to ask Pence to agree to stay at Triple-A Sacramento even after he's activated so he can work on it in a lower-pressure environment, though that may be asking a bit much. Either way, it's worth watching how he performs as he goes back to taking hacks in games to determine whether the change could give him more alluring fantasy potential.

May 17, 2018 8:20 pm Giants' Madison Bumgarner: Another bullpen on tap Saturday by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Bumgarner (hand) will stretch out to 40 pitches in his bullpen session Saturday, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area
The lefty continues to quickly work his way back since being cleared to resume baseball activities earlier this month. Bumgarner recently mixed all of his pitches in his bullpen session Wednesday. If he gets through Saturday's session without any issue, he'll be ready to begin his rehab assignment May 26.

May 17, 2018 8:12 pm Giants' Joe Panik: Begins baseball activities Thursday by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Panik (thumb) resumed light baseball activities Thursday and also took dry swings,Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
This was a big step for Panik as it marked the first time since he underwent surgery that he did any baseball-related work. Panik took part in infield drills and told reporters that he's still in the process of building up strength in his surgically repaired thumb. Once Panik ramps up to taking batting practice, his timetable will come into clearer focus. The Giants will continue with a patchwork platoon at second base while Panik is on the shelf.

May 17, 2018 7:54 pm Giants' Mark Melancon: Throws live BP, nearing rehab assignment by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Melancon (elbow) threw live batting practice Thursday and could be ready to start a rehab assignment over the weekend, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The righty lasted 20 pitches during Thursday's session and apparently was effective enough to where the Giants are mulling sending him on a rehab assignment as early as Sunday. Melancon has been on the shelf since the start of the season, so he'll likely need a multi-week stay in the minors before being activated off the 60-day disabled list. Hunter Strickland, who has nine saves in 11 attempts, will continue to close for the Giants in Melancon's absence.

May 14, 2018 5:24 pm Giants' Alen Hanson: Heads to disabled list by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Hanson (hamstring) was placed on the disabled list Monday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego reports.
Hanson suffered the injury Saturday against the Pirates. He was available off the bench Sunday, but apparently the team decided he'll need more time off. Prior to the injury, he was doing very well filling in for the injured Joe Panik (thumb), hitting .298 with four homers in 14 games. Austin Slater was called up to take his place on the roster.

May 13, 2018 11:39 am Giants' Derek Law: In walking boot by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Law was seen wearing a walking boot Sunday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
Law, who was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, was reportedly seen sporting a walking boot in the Giants' clubhouse Sunday in Pittsburgh. No other news of the injury has been conceded, but it sounds like the reliever is dealing with some sort of foot or ankle setback.
