Jansen said he will need to watch video on Wednesday to help deduce the problems, but he suspects he is not fully extending on his delivery to home plate.
“Once I extend that’s when I have my best cut. Probably today that’s the one thing I misfired on,” Jansen said. “I just have to be consistent, stay behind the ball and make my spots. That’s when the ball cuts.”

IMO, Jansen's cutter is not "cutting" as much as we are accustomed to seeing. He has always gotten away with throwing to any location because his cutter was hard and had late movement. For a couple of weeks his velocity was down 3-4 MPH, in the 90-91 range, but last night he seemed to be throwing it about 93 or so. However, the ball had no movement on it, and IMO that is why he got crushed. He needs to find that bite to his cutter for him to be effective again, and I believe he will.

I turned it off after Kenley blew the save because I had to get up early the next day for work. Glad they won, but I didn't see any postgame comments.

Were you not aware that pitchers start losing velocity as they age? You keep bringing this up like it’s surprising; it’s well documented that pitchers on average start losing velocity very early in their careers. I was aware that at some point it happens. Just is a concerning factor (with the teams goal) it happened to the teams two best pitchers at the same time. I think there is something else at play in Jansen's case. He has no idea where the ball is going (isn't locating). He may need a trip to the DL for the time being. He also hasn't pitched very often lately which doesn't help either. It’s not at some point. Pitchers (on average) start to lose velocity right at the beginning of their career.

“The velocity was good but the characteristics of his cutter just weren’t doing what it typically does,” Roberts said. “There were some good throws but there were others that were straight as a string. The one to Hosmer, the one to Villanueva.”

Glad my thoughts align with those of the manager.
